Checklist Item 1: Wheel-Free or Wheel-Engaging?

The first question on the pre-purchase checklist for a scissor lift for automotive restoration is whether you need wheel-free access. Restoration work regularly involves floor pan replacement, rocker panel fabrication, rear quarter panel welding, and other jobs where the vehicle body is being cut and welded while the wheels are removed. That work is much easier on a wheel-free scissor lift for automotive service, which engages the vehicle at the pinch weld or a frame contact point and leaves the wheels hanging free.

A wheel-engaging scissor with a drive-on platform is the wrong tool for that job. It puts the vehicle on its wheels, which means you cannot easily remove them for undercarriage work. Some restoration shops that only do minor cosmetic and mechanical work can get by with a wheel-engaging scissor. Most serious restoration shops need wheel-free access as their default, and they should spec a frame-engaging scissor with pad arms from day one. That headroom is going to still be there when he decides to take in a bigger project in year seven, and the lift will not notice the load.

Restoration involves welding under the vehicle. A scissor lift for automotive restoration work has to give the technician clear access along both sides of the vehicle centerline for weld work, without a scissor arm running through the weld path. That is the single detail that separates a great restoration lift from a mediocre one. Some scissor designs put the arms outside the vehicle track, which is what you want. Other designs put the arms inside the track, which forces the technician to work around the geometry.

Checklist Item 4: Slab Condition in an Older Farm Shop

Cedar Falls farm shops range in age from newly-built pole barns to century-old wood-framed barns with slab-on-grade concrete added later. The slab condition varies wildly and is the single most-important pre-purchase item for restoration lifts because the equipment sits and works in one place for months at a time. A few older shops still have 60-amp service, which is not enough for a modern scissor lift for automotive service running alongside a MIG welder and shop compressor. Restoration work is electricity-intensive because the welder pulls hard and the compressor cycles often during air-tool work, and a lift trying to lift into that same circuit will occasionally fault the breaker.

The Cedar Falls shop had 200-amp service and a dedicated 30-amp breaker slot available for the lift, which we wired to a NEMA L6-30 receptacle within four feet of the lift power unit position. Cost of the electrical work was reasonable, well under a full day of an electrician’s time. If your farm shop is on 100-amp service and you are also running a welder and compressor, you may need to talk to the utility about a service upgrade before you install the lift. By contrast, a cheaper import scissor lift for automotive restoration bought to save 30 percent on day one will often need cable replacement at year six, a full hydraulic system rebuild by year ten, and parts that we may not be able to source in eastern Iowa because the importer has stopped supporting the SKU. Some of those cheap lifts get scrapped by year twelve because a $600 part is on a container ship somewhere and the shop cannot wait six months for it. The twenty-year cost of a name-brand Rotary or Challenger scissor lift for automotive restoration is often lower than the twenty-year cost of the discount alternative, once you count the downtime and the second lift you had to buy to replace the first. Do the honest math before you shop on price alone.
