The natural instinct at a body shop is to buy a 4-post storage lift for the parking side and a 2-post for the service side. That works, but it uses two full bays. A full-rise scissor lift for automotive service does both jobs from one bay: it lifts a customer car for service in the morning and holds a project car up in the air overnight for storage. The key is that a drive-on scissor can lock at any height and stay there indefinitely, which is functionally the same as a 4-post for parking a car up and driving a second car in underneath.
The math works: one bay with a scissor holds one car above and one car below when parked, and it services one car when open. Two bays with separate lifts hold two cars above and two below, but require twice the concrete, twice the electrical, and twice the freight. The car below drives in and out with normal head clearance. On a 12-foot ceiling shop like most modern Urbandale body shop buildings, you get another two feet of margin which lets you park taller vehicles up top.
The trick is matching the vehicle heights. A Ford F-250 crew cab is about 6 feet 6 inches tall. A Honda Civic is about 4 feet 8 inches. If it’s the other way around with the Civic on top and the F-250 below, you have to check the roof height math against the ceiling.
