The checklist item nobody starts with: your slab
Before you pick a model, before you pick a brand, walk out to your garage with a tape measure and a flashlight and check the slab. What is the concrete pour depth? Most hobbyist garages along the Iowa-Nebraska border were poured 3 inches thick with wire mesh, not 4 inches with rebar. A 3-inch slab is not fatal for a portable scissor, but it puts a hard ceiling on the capacity you can safely put on it. If you are dreaming about lifting a 3/4-ton diesel someday, 3 inches will not do it. Add the cost of a slab overlay or a new pour to your project budget if that is your target vehicle.
Second slab question: is it level? Third: are there control joints or expansion joints running under where the base will sit? Do not anchor across an expansion joint. Capacity: buy for the vehicle you will actually own

If your daily is a passenger sedan and your project is a Chevelle, 6,000 pounds is plenty. If your daily is a 3/4-ton pickup and you are thinking about a Cummins swap someday, 9,000 or 10,000 pounds is where you want to be.
Where hobbyists get themselves in trouble is buying a 6,000-pound scissor and then falling in love with a 7,500-pound classic truck three years later. You cannot safely lift that truck on the scissor you bought, and now you either sell the lift at a loss or you park the project until you upgrade. The used-lift market for undersize scissors is thin because everyone who really needs a lift needs more capacity, not less. If your ceiling is 9 feet and your project truck is 78 inches tall, you have only 30 or so inches of lift travel before the roof hits something. That is not a lift, that is a stiff jack.
Along the Iowa-Nebraska border, we see a lot of older two-and-a-half-car garages with 8-foot ceilings, and those buyers should not be looking at full-rise scissors — they should be looking at mid-rise or low-rise scissors, or a low-ceiling two-post. A mid-rise scissor lift for automotive hobbyist work still gets you 42 to 48 inches of travel, which is plenty for wheel-bearing service and brakes but not enough to stand under a truck. Do the measurement in your own garage before you shop. If you have 10 feet or more of clear ceiling, full-rise is on the table. Less than 10 feet, you have to compromise somewhere.

Wheel-bearing service is one of the specific reasons hobbyists buy a scissor. On a jack stand, packing a bearing in the cold is miserable and slightly scary. On a lift, you spin the hub, torque the axle nut properly, and check the seal without your back on the concrete. But scissor lifts have arms and pivots running under the vehicle, and depending on the model, they can block access to the wheel from behind.
Ask about pad clearance and arm swing before you buy. A full-rise scissor lift for automotive wheel service should let you pull the wheel completely off, spin the hub freely, and get an impact gun on the axle nut without the tool banging into a scissor arm. Some lower-end models have the arms sitting right where you want to stand. Twenty-year total cost of ownership
Here is the twenty-year math nobody does. A cheap entry-level scissor bought at the low four-figure price will typically need cable replacement at year five, cylinder rebuild at year eight, and by year twelve the manufacturer is out of business or has abandoned parts support. Total 20-year cost, including replacement lift at year twelve: mid four-figures for the first lift plus mid four-figures for the replacement, plus service. Call it high four-figures to low five-figures total.
A shop-grade scissor lift for automotive garage use bought at mid-to-high four figures typically runs 20 years on original cables replaced once, cylinder maintained but not rebuilt, and full parts availability throughout. Total 20-year cost: high four-figures for equipment, low four-figures in service, no replacement. Roughly equal total cost, but you got twice as many working years, no downtime for the replacement, and a lift that still has residual value at year 20. The math almost always favors the better lift. Buyers who ignore this math are usually the same ones who show up at year six asking us to source parts for a brand nobody makes anymore.
Portable versus surface-mount for a hobbyist
Portable full-rise scissors sound great — roll them out when you need them, roll them into the corner when you do not. In practice, portable scissors weigh 1,200 to 1,800 pounds and moving them requires a pallet jack and a level floor. Nobody actually rolls them around every weekend. What portable really means is: you can move it once during a lease change or a garage remodel, and it does not require permanent anchoring.
Surface-mount scissors anchor to the concrete with four to six bolts. They are more stable at full extension, they hold their calibration better over time, and they are a nightmare to move once installed.
