EV specialty shops opening along the Iowa-Nebraska border keep asking us the same question about a scissor lift for automotive service on battery-heavy cars: do the old rules still apply, or does the extra weight and the lithium pack change the machine you should buy. The short answer is that most of what you’ve heard is wrong in one direction or another. EVs aren’t as different from traditional passenger cars on a lift as the internet makes them sound, but they do have a few real constraints that matter. Myth one: EVs are too heavy for a scissor lift for automotive service

The most common myth is that EVs weigh so much that only a heavy-duty commercial lift can handle them. That is mostly wrong. A Tesla Model 3 curb weight is around 4,000 pounds. A Model Y is around 4,400. A Ford Mustang Mach-E is around 4,900. A Chevy Bolt is 3,600. All of those fit comfortably inside a 6,000-pound rated passenger scissor lift for automotive brake service, with real margin. The vehicles that are actually heavy are the electric pickups: a Ford F-150 Lightning is 6,500 pounds and a Rivian R1T is 7,100 pounds. Those need a 10,000-pound or higher lift.

Point-load matters more than total weight. Because the battery pack is a big flat mass under the floor, the load distribution on an EV is more even side-to-side than on an ICE car with a heavy engine up front. That means the pad forces on a scissor are also more even, which is easier on the machine, not harder. If you were picking a lift for a fleet of Model 3s and Model Ys only, a well-built 6,000-pound scissor would be enough. It’s the pickup class that pushes the rating up.

Myth two: EVs need special lift pads

There is a real kernel of truth here. EVs have specific factory jack points marked in the service manual, and those points must be used to avoid damaging the battery pack. On a Tesla, they’re small pucks on the pinch welds. On a Rivian, they’re marked slots on the battery skid plate. What is not true is that you need a completely different scissor lift for automotive EV service. You need EV-friendly rubber pads that fit the jack points, and most manufacturers sell them as accessories.

Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas all sell EV pad kits that adapt their standard scissor lifts to the specific jack point geometry of the top EV models. The kits are typically a hundred to a few hundred dollars and they screw or clip onto the standard lift pads. There’s no reason to buy a different lift; just add the pads. Our install crew keeps EV pad kits in stock and drops them off with new EV shops as part of the delivery package.

Myth three: you can’t do brake work on an EV with a scissor

This is entirely a myth. Brake work on an EV is essentially identical to brake work on an ICE car. The rotors are similar sizes, the calipers hang similarly, and the pads swap out with the same tools. The one difference is that EVs regen-brake so heavily that the friction pads often last twice as long as ICE pads, which means brake service is less frequent. When it does come up, a scissor lift for automotive brake work is the exact right tool because the wheels need to be off the ground and the tech needs access to the caliper.

Pad scissor lifts with wide-open wheel access are the fastest configuration for EV brake service. Drive-on runway scissors work too but require a rolling jack under the axle to lift the tire off the runway. If your shop is doing more than a few brake jobs a week, the pad scissor is worth the ergonomic gain. Rotor swaps on a Model 3 with a fresh pad scissor run about 25 minutes per corner in a competent shop.

Real spec math: comparing three scissor lift for automotive models on EV coverage

Let’s compare three actual models: the Rotary SM122 mid-rise pad scissor at 12,000 pounds, the Challenger SRM10 full-rise runway scissor at 10,000 pounds, and the Rotary MR6 mid-rise pad scissor at 6,000 pounds. On a passenger EV fleet of Model 3, Model Y, and Bolt, all three lifts work. On a mixed fleet that includes an F-150 Lightning or a Rivian R1T, the SM122 handles it, the SRM10 handles it with margin, and the MR6 doesn’t. On battery pack drop work, where the whole pack lowers on a hydraulic table, the SM122 or the SRM10 both give the necessary height.

For an EV specialty shop opening along the Iowa-Nebraska border, our default recommendation is one SRM10 and one SM122. The SRM10 handles the tallest EVs and gives full standing headroom for underbody work. The SM122 handles high-frequency brake and tire jobs on the pad scissor. Together they cover about 95 percent of the EV work in the current market. Add a third machine if you’re doing high-voltage pack work daily.

Myth four: EV battery weight breaks scissor lifts over time

The concern here is that repeated high-load cycles on a scissor will fatigue the cylinders and pins faster than on an ICE fleet. In practice, cycle life on any ALI Gold certified scissor lift for automotive service is rated for tens of thousands of full-load cycles, and the additional 500 to 1,000 pounds of an EV over an equivalent ICE car is well within the fatigue design margin. We’ve serviced scissor lifts that have done nothing but Teslas for four years, and the wear pattern looks identical to a mixed passenger car fleet.

What does fatigue faster is the hydraulic oil if the shop cycles the machine too many times per day without letting the oil rest. This is not an EV problem, it’s a duty-cycle problem. High-volume shops of any type should top off and change the hydraulic oil on schedule, and they should watch cylinder rod seals for weep at the first sign. Our annual ALI inspection catches this early. EV shops are no different from ICE shops in this regard.

Ventilation, spill kits, and other things that are actually EV-specific

Where EV shops do need to do things differently is in ventilation, spill response, and electrical isolation. If a battery pack is damaged or venting, the shop needs positive-pressure ventilation and a Class D fire response plan. That’s true regardless of the lift you own. It’s not a scissor lift for automotive spec issue, it’s a shop safety and code issue. Your local fire marshal can walk you through the requirements. Auto Lift Services doesn’t sell the ventilation gear but we can point to a licensed contractor who does.

Electrical isolation matters on any shop that opens battery packs. The tech needs Class 0 insulated gloves, a proper shorting bar, and a locked-out charge system before touching high-voltage components. Again, nothing about this changes the scissor lift you buy. What it does change is where you route the shop’s 220V lines relative to the battery bay, and whether you need an emergency disconnect within reach of the lift controls.
