A collector in northwest Iowa emailed us in early 2024 looking for a scissor lift for automotive brake and rotor work on the six restored cars he keeps in a heated 40×60 pole barn. Overhead versus baseplate — the conversation that started it
Overhead and baseplate are configuration terms that come from the two-post lift world, not the scissor world. An overhead two-post runs a crossbar across the top connecting the columns, which keeps hydraulic and electrical lines out of the floor but requires ceiling clearance. A baseplate two-post runs the crossbar along the floor between the columns, freeing the ceiling but adding a floor-level obstruction to walk over. Both are two-post-specific choices. Collectors often default to a four-post because they want the storage option — park one car on top, one underneath. That works, and a four-post is genuinely the right pick if storage is your only use case. But if you also want to do real brake and suspension work, a four-post fights you on wheels-free access unless you add rolling jacks, and even then the rolling-jack setup on a four-post is more choreographed than on a scissor. The collector wanted both storage and real service capability without swapping lifts.
We ran him through the trade-off honestly. A drive-on scissor with the platforms sized for one of his cars gives him wheels-free access via rolling jacks for brake and suspension work, and if he wanted the stored-car-underneath option, he had two paths: park a low car directly under a raised scissor platform, or add a separate four-post for pure storage. He picked path one after we measured his cars — his lowest sedan cleared the scissor’s underside with the lift latched at second-position. One lift, both jobs. That was the outcome he wanted.
Rise-height locks and the 2.5-inch increment

He told me a month after install that the incremental lock system was the single feature that most changed how he used the lift day to day.
