A small-fleet operator in the Des Moines metro asked us to compare two specific scissor lift for automotive alignment applications side by side — the Rotary X14 and the Challenger DX77 — because his lead tech had strong opinions and he wanted a neutral second opinion before writing a check. His fleet is 18 vehicles: mostly F-150 and F-250 pickups, a couple of Sprinter vans, and three Silverado 2500HDs. Alignment work runs weekly, and he was tired of doing it on his aging 2-post lift because the front wheels have to hang free during measurement. Capacity, Height, and Deck Length

The Rotary X14 is rated at 14,000 lb lifting capacity — plenty for the Silverado 2500HD at roughly 7,500 lb curb weight, and it leaves headroom for a work truck with a full toolbox and tools onboard. Max lift height is around 74 inches. Deck length is 189 inches, which handles anything up to a long-bed crew-cab pickup without hanging the wheels off the ends. The Challenger DX77, by contrast, is rated at 7,700 lb capacity — enough for the F-150s and Sprinters but too tight a margin for the 2500HDs when loaded. Max lift height is comparable at around 74 inches. Deck length is shorter at roughly 172 inches.

For a mixed-fleet small operator who occasionally lifts a fully-loaded heavy-duty pickup, the X14 is the safer choice. For a shop that stays entirely inside the half-ton and light SUV world, the DX77 saves footprint and money. This particular operator has 2500HDs in the mix, so we recommended the X14 based on capacity alone — the DX77 would technically work most of the time, but the day someone loads a plow blade on the front of a Silverado is the day you regret buying the smaller lift. A scissor lift for automotive alignment work should be sized for your worst-case vehicle, not your average.

Alignment Kit Compatibility

Both lifts accept factory alignment kits: turnplates at the front deck slots and rear slip plates. Rotary’s X14 alignment kit is a bolt-on package with steel turnplates rated for 7,500 lb per plate — matching the maximum weight-per-corner spec of the lift. Challenger’s DX77 alignment kit uses lighter turnplates rated for 3,500 lb per plate, appropriate for the 7,700 lb total lift capacity. If you’re aligning HD pickups, this is one more reason the X14 wins for mixed-fleet work: heavier plates, longer service life.

Both alignment kits use standard pin locations and are compatible with any name-brand alignment machine (Hunter, John Bean, Snap-on). The scissor lift for automotive alignment application is fundamentally about giving the alignment tech level, stable, adjustable-height access to all four wheels simultaneously — something a 2-post can’t do because the front wheels have to be jacked separately for measurement. On a scissor with proper turnplates and slip plates, the tech runs the alignment start-to-finish without setting a single floor jack under the vehicle. That’s typically 15-20 minutes saved per alignment.

Cycle Speed and Duty Rating

The Rotary X14 raises fully in about 50 seconds and lowers in about 45 seconds. The Challenger DX77 raises in about 55 seconds and lowers in about 40 seconds. In practical terms, these are close enough that no one is choosing one over the other on speed alone. Where duty rating matters more: both are rated for commercial continuous service, but the X14 has a slightly beefier power unit (3.7 HP vs 2.5 HP) that shrugs off back-to-back heavy lifts without heat-cycling the motor.

For an 18-vehicle fleet doing rotating alignment work, the difference between the two motors will not be visible over the first five years. Over a 15-year ownership window, the X14’s motor almost certainly outlasts the DX77’s. That said, both units use standard hydraulic power packs that we stock and can replace in a day if it ever became necessary. A scissor lift for automotive alignment work in a real fleet shop is going to see 200-500 cycles per year — well inside either lift’s duty envelope.

Floor Space and Bay Fit

The X14’s overall footprint stowed is roughly 189 inches long by 84 inches wide (measured across the outer platforms). The DX77 stows at roughly 172 by 78 inches. Both fit comfortably in a standard 12×24 or wider bay. Where the difference matters is if you’re squeezing into a converted 10-foot-wide bay — the DX77 wins there. This operator had a 15-foot-wide bay with a 24-foot depth, so either would fit; we went with the X14 for the capacity reasons already covered.

Both lifts are surface-mounted with anchor bolts into the slab, so there’s no cutting or trenching — they’re removable if the shop ever relocates, which is a real consideration for a growing fleet operation. Neither model is a flush-mount option (those exist but require significant slab cutting). For the scissor lift for automotive alignment role specifically, surface-mount is what you want: the alignment ramps are at a natural drive-on height, and you’re not adding trench-hazard signage to the bay.

Total Installed Cost and Payback

We won’t publish exact numbers, but the honest range: X14 with alignment kit, delivered and installed in the Des Moines metro, sits in the low-to-mid twenties. The DX77 with its alignment kit lands in the high teens. The X14 is roughly a 25-30% premium for the capacity, motor, and heavier turnplates. Financing at 0% for 12 months with 90-day deferral through First Business is available on either unit, which means the payment on the X14 lands somewhere around $2,000/month for a year.

For a fleet doing one to two alignments per week internally instead of farming them out at retail rates, the payback on a scissor lift for automotive alignment work is typically 14-24 months. If the fleet is also using the lift for the associated tire and brake work — which is basically free once you own the lift and the tech is standing there — the payback compresses to under a year. Delivery, Install, and First-Year Support
