Start the decision tree with your actual vehicle mix
Every good buying decision starts here, not with the lift. Write down the ten heaviest vehicles you have wrenched on in the last twelve months. Curb weight, wheelbase, tallest and lowest ground clearance. For our eastern Nebraska caller, that list was a 1932 Ford coupe (1,900 pounds), a 1970 Chevelle SS (3,600 pounds), a Chrysler 300 sedan (4,300 pounds), and — the outlier — a customer’s Ford F-250 diesel at 7,600 pounds that he was helping with a suspension refresh. The mix told us he did not need a heavy-duty two-post, but he did need a machine that could cover 8,000 pounds occasionally.
The mix also tells you what deck reach you need. Muscle-era cars sit long — a Chevelle’s wheelbase is 112 inches — and the F-250 crew cab is closer to 158. A short scissor deck will strand one axle unsupported. Our first branch of the tree, then, is not “how much do you want to spend” but “what is the maximum wheelbase and weight you actually need to lift.” Once those two numbers are on paper, the budget bracket falls out of them.
Budget path 1: entry-level portable scissor under $4,000
Path one is the true entry level. Import mid-rise scissors, roughly 6,000-pound rating, 42 to 46 inch lift height, single-cylinder single-motor design, ship in a crate, and land in your bay for less than the price of a decent transmission jack plus tool cart. This path fits a hobby restorer working on cars alone — one or two vehicles a month, capacity ceiling around 5,500 pounds real-world (never load a rig to its labeled max), deck length borderline for anything over 116-inch wheelbase.
What you give up at this tier is honest support. The warranty is 90 days on structure, sometimes shorter on hydraulics. Replacement seals, when a cylinder starts weeping in year three, are usually orderable from the manufacturer but backordered six weeks. For a working restoration shop, that downtime is expensive. That matters for a shop doing volume, because at 300-plus lift cycles a year, seals do age. The premium tier runs in the low to mid-eight-thousands before install accessories.
What ALI Gold actually buys you is documented safety-cam engagement testing, torque-verified anchor patterns (if you ever decide to fix the rig in place later), and printed inspection records for your insurance carrier. Some collector-car insurance policies now ask about lift certification when a shop is storing a $200,000 restoration project on it. Hydraulic cylinder seals and rebuild kits — what wears and when
Every hydraulic scissor lift has cylinders, every cylinder has seals, and every seal wears. On a mid-tier or premium unit, expect main piston seals to start weeping around cycle 8,000 to 12,000 — roughly year six to eight in a working shop, longer in a hobby garage. Weeping is a nuisance, not a safety issue; the safety cams still hold. But if you let a weep run for a year, the seal fails hard and you lose the ability to hold pressure long enough to lower under control.
Rebuild is not a mystery. Drop the deck all the way down, block it, disconnect the hydraulic lines, pull the cylinder rod, replace the piston seal, rod seal, wiper, and O-rings from the manufacturer’s kit, reassemble with clean fluid. Wheel bearing service workflow on a scissor deck
Wheel bearing service is the daily bread of a restoration shop, and this is where a scissor lift shines relative to a two-post. Drive over the deck, chock, raise to a comfortable stand-and-work height (usually 40 inches for wheel-off), lower onto safety cams, remove the wheels. On a two-post, you have wheel access but you are working around the swing arms. On a scissor deck, the arms are gone entirely and both front (or both rear) wheels are open.
For older muscle-car wheel bearings — tapered inner and outer races on the front spindle — you can pull the drum or rotor, back off the castle nut, pull the hub, and inspect grease in about twenty minutes without ever fighting a post arm. Repack, torque to spec, cotter pin, done. On modern sealed-bearing hubs the removal takes longer but the ergonomics of standing at the deck instead of ducking under it save your back over an eight-hour day.
