An overlanding builder in Waterloo pinged us in early spring about a scissor lift / portable for a shop he was standing up next to his primary garage — a dedicated overland-build bay with room for one lifted truck at a time and no columns interrupting his workflow. This piece is the case-study writeup, the same kind of thing we walk potential customers through when they ask what a project like this actually looks like when the pallet lands. The Waterloo Job — Setting the Scene

The customer had a mid-size lifted pickup with thirty-seven-inch tires, an eighty-inch axle-to-axle wheelbase, and an aftermarket long-travel suspension he had already built once and wanted to redo. His existing garage had a two-post lift he installed twelve years ago that no longer served him well because the columns crowded the working aisles once the truck was up. He wanted a scissor lift / portable that could raise the truck to a comfortable working height, roll off to one side when he wanted the whole bay clear, and handle roughly one lift cycle per weekend for the next fifteen years.

We looked at the concrete first. His slab was six inches, industrial mix, poured when the shop was built four years ago. Ceiling clearance was eleven and a half feet — plenty for a mid-rise scissor with thirty-seven-inch tires on a fully compressed suspension. Electrical was a fifty-amp sub-panel in the corner with room to add a dedicated circuit. On paper it was a straightforward install. In practice we always find something, and we did. The runway pads that shipped with the lift did not match the frame contact points on his truck, so we spec-adjusted before install day.

Why a Scissor Lift / Portable Beat a Two-Post for This Build

Two-posts are our default recommendation for most shops that do not have space or ceiling constraints, but they cost you column space on both sides of the vehicle. For a builder who wants full walk-around access to his truck during a long project — dropping the transfer case, pulling axles, working the frame — every square inch of aisle matters. A scissor lift / portable puts the entire lift structure under the vehicle. There are no columns to trip over, no crossbar to duck, and no cables running through the ceiling.

The tradeoff is that a scissor cannot swing arms out of the way to give you access to the pinch weld or rocker area from beneath a normal ride-height vehicle. For an overland truck with plenty of ground clearance, this is a non-issue — the frame is well above the deck at drive-on height, and the pad targets fall on the frame rails naturally. We drove his truck onto the lift, marked the contact points with chalk, verified centerline, and set the mechanical stops so future cycles would land identically. That last step is the difference between a scissor that gets used and one that sits in the corner because nobody wants to re-align pads every session.

Suspension and Shock Access from a Frame Lift

Suspension work on a scissor lift / portable is where the design shines for an overland build. With the frame lifted and the wheels drooped, upper and lower control arms are at chest height, and shock bolts are dead-center in your reach. On his truck, the front coilovers came out in twelve minutes each because he did not have to work around a two-post column or bend under a cross-arm. Rear shock service dropped from an hour on the old lift to twenty-five minutes on the new one.

The other suspension win is that the truck can droop fully because there is nothing under the tires. On a two-post, the wheels are already in the air but the geometry is what it is. On a scissor with the frame supported, you can jack the axle up if you want to compress the shock for install, or let it hang to its full travel for measurement. That flexibility matters for a builder who is running spring rates and shock lengths through their real travel envelopes. He measured droop numbers on our lift he had never been able to measure at home before.

Cable Inspection and Replacement Intervals

Cables on a scissor lift / portable are not the same beast as cables on a four-post — most modern frame scissors are cylinder-driven with no equalization cables at all. What we look at instead on the ninety-day service call is hydraulic hoses, pivot pin condition, and the safety-lock ratchet that engages in every position of the lift travel. Those items have their own inspection cadence and we walked the customer through it on install day.

If your scissor does use equalization cables — some older mid-rise units did — the inspection interval is annual for hobby use and quarterly for commercial. Look for cracked strands under the sheave, corrosion at the anchor point, and abnormal stretch that would let one runway sit higher than the other. Replace as a set, never one at a time. First Ninety Days of Use — What We Saw

The first ninety days on a scissor lift / portable are diagnostic — you learn what the lift actually does in your bay, not just what the spec sheet promised. The Waterloo builder logged fourteen cycles in the first three months, most of them long-duration lifts where the truck sat elevated for a weekend of work. On the ninety-day service call we found seepage at one hydraulic fitting we snugged in ten seconds, verified the safety locks engaged in every position, and topped off the fluid a quarter-inch.

He also discovered something we tell every buyer to watch for — the lift telegraphed subtle information about his slab. When the truck was fully raised, one corner of the runway sat two millimeters lower than the other three. That is well within tolerance but it told him the pad had a small settle in that corner. Nothing to fix, everything to know. That kind of ambient information is a benefit of a scissor lift you use regularly. We took the measurements, wrote them into the service log, and moved on.

The Bill of Materials — Lift, Consumables, Wiring

The bill of materials on the Waterloo install came out to the lift itself, four hundred dollars of hydraulic fluid and pin grease for the first year, a fresh two-twenty single-phase circuit run by his electrician, four anchor bolts, and the freight from our Ames warehouse. He handled the electrical work himself with our sizing guidance — twenty-amp breaker, ten-gauge wire, a dedicated outlet within twelve feet of the pump. That kept his cost down without compromising the install.

We shipped the lift with two spare rubber pads, an extra bottle of hydraulic fluid, and the printed manual laminated because we know how oily hands treat paper. Those small things do not show up on the invoice but they show up in the customer relationship. The total spend across all lift-related line items landed in the range we quoted him on the first phone call, which is the way we like every job to end. No surprises means the customer trusts us the next time he needs anything, and referral traffic is how the shop grows. Lessons We Took Back Home

Every install teaches us something, and Waterloo taught us two things worth writing down. First, spec-adjusting the frame pads before shipment saves a return trip. We now ask every scissor lift / portable customer for a photo of their vehicle’s pinch-weld or frame-contact area before we ship, so we can match pad geometry from Ames rather than at their curb. That change came directly from the Waterloo job and has saved us three return trips already this year.

Second, the ninety-day service call is worth its weight. We used to treat it as a warranty formality. It is actually the moment when the customer knows enough to ask real questions and we know the lift well enough to answer them. On the Waterloo job, the ninety-day call is when we discovered the fitting seepage and the slab micro-settle. Neither would have surfaced in a phone check-in. Both were resolved in twenty minutes on site. The overland builder now has a lift that fits his workflow and a service relationship he can call any Saturday. That is the outcome we are aiming for every time we spec a scissor.
