Pre-Purchase Checklist: What to Measure Before You Call

Floor-to-ceiling clearance under any purlin or truss that runs across the lift zone. Bay width from wall to wall. Bay depth from door to back wall. Slab thickness (a coring sample beats a guess). The Ames farmer had a 30×40 pole building with 12-foot side walls, similar to the customer letters we get every spring. The Ames farmer’s daily-driver 3/4-ton was under 8,000 lb loaded, so the home-storage BendPak was plenty. If he’d been running an F-350 dually with a service body, we would have pushed him to the Rotary or Challenger 12K tier. That capacity conversation is the single most-skipped step when farm shops shop online. What Storage-Capable Actually Means on the Spec Sheet
Every four-post lift is technically capable of holding a stored vehicle, but not every one is rated for it. The spec-sheet line that matters is the sustained-load rating — the weight the lift can hold at height for an indefinite period without cylinder pressure drift or cable-tension loss. Storage-only units carry an explicit sustained-load rating; storage-capable service units carry it as well; pure service-rated units may not.
On the BendPak HD-9 and comparable models, the sustained-load rating matches the peak lift rating, so 9,000 lb up means 9,000 lb held indefinitely. That’s what farm-shop buyers should be reading. If the spec sheet doesn’t list a sustained-load rating separately from the peak lift rating, the lift is probably not intended for long-duration storage. Daily Maintenance on a Pole-Building Setup
Pole buildings have a specific set of daily-maintenance concerns that don’t show up in shop bays. Dust and grit blow in through door seals, hydraulic-fluid contamination is a bigger issue than in a sealed shop, and rodent damage to hydraulic lines is a real occasional problem. We spec a slightly more aggressive fluid-change interval for farm-shop installs — every two years instead of every three — and we recommend a rodent-proof cover for the hydraulic power unit.
Daily-maintenance work itself — oil changes, tire rotations, general inspection — is easier on a four-post than a two-post for a solo operator because there’s nothing to walk around and no arms to swing out. The retired farmer we sold to said the biggest workflow improvement was being able to leave a car up overnight without worrying about hydraulic drift. What We Wish More Farm Shop Owners Would Ask

We ask about slab thickness, edge distance, and rebar every time, and we do a physical coring visit for any farm-shop install where the numbers aren’t confidently known.
The other under-asked question is future ceiling. A pole building that’s fine today may get insulated or ceilinged later, which drops effective clearance. We ask every farm-shop buyer about their plans for the building before we finalize the model spec. Getting that conversation in early has saved several customers from a mismatch between vehicle storage lifts and a building they upgraded three years after purchase.
