A vehicle collector in the Ames area called us last year with a garage full of stored cars and no way to get under any of them without crawling on a creeper, and by the end of the conversation the plan was clear: a 12000 lb 2 post lift, positioned to work around the vehicles already parked in the space rather than forcing a rebuild of the whole garage. A year later, after the install and a full season of wheel bearing service and routine maintenance on his collection, the layout decisions we made together turned out to matter just as much as the lift itself. Starting With the Vehicles, Not the Lift

Most people planning a lift install start by shopping lift specs. We started this project by walking the garage and looking at what was already parked there — a mix of classic cars and a couple of newer trucks, none of them light. That’s what pointed us to a 12000 lb 2 post lift instead of a lighter-duty home unit; several vehicles in the collection were heavier than they looked, and a lift sized for “probably fine” isn’t a lift you want holding up something you’ve spent years restoring.

Once we had the capacity nailed down, the layout question became about traffic flow, not just floor space. A collector garage isn’t a repair shop with one car in and one car out — it’s often several vehicles stored long-term with one pulled out for service at a time. That changes where the lift should sit relative to doors, other parked vehicles, and how much clearance the columns need on either side for safe entry and exit without clipping mirrors or fenders on the cars parked nearby.

Choosing the Bay Position for Long-Term Storage Access

We ended up positioning the 12000 lb 2 post lift toward the rear of the garage, closest to the overhead door, rather than centered in the space the way a typical shop bay would be laid out. That decision came down to how the collection gets used: vehicles get pulled in and out individually, and the lift needed to be reachable without navigating around three or four other stored cars every time.

Column spacing also had to account for the widest vehicle in the collection, plus enough side clearance to open doors fully during service. We measured the widest classic in the garage — an older full-size sedan with doors that swing wider than most modern cars — and set the column width with that vehicle as the baseline, rather than defaulting to a standard spacing that would have worked for smaller vehicles but pinched access on the biggest one.

Ceiling Height and Arm Reach for a Mixed Collection

The Ames garage had just enough ceiling height to make an overhead-style lift workable, but it was close enough that we double-checked clearance at full rise with the tallest vehicle in mind, not the shortest. A 12000 lb 2 post lift with a crossbar at the top needs several inches of buffer above the highest point of the tallest vehicle when fully raised, and collector garages built decades ago don’t always have generous ceiling height to spare.

Arm reach mattered just as much for this collection because the wheelbases varied so widely — a compact classic and a full-size truck have very different lift points. We specified arms with enough telescoping range to comfortably reach factory lift points on every vehicle in the current collection, plus some margin for whatever gets added down the road, since collectors rarely stop at the vehicles they own on install day.

Install Day: What Actually Happened

Install day started with a concrete check, which is standard for us but especially important in older garages where slab thickness and cure quality can vary a lot from what blueprints suggest. The Ames garage had solid concrete, which meant we could proceed with standard anchor bolts rather than needing supplemental pad work, but we’ve had collector garage installs where that wasn’t the case and the timeline stretched by a day for concrete reinforcement.

The physical install of the 12000 lb 2 post lift took roughly half a day, but the layout planning we’d done beforehand is what kept that install fast. Because column position, arm configuration, and electrical routing had already been decided, our crew wasn’t making layout decisions on the fly — they were executing a plan. We finished with a full safety inspection and a walkthrough covering arm restriction pins, cable tension, and the lockout procedure, since this owner would be doing his own service work rather than hiring it out.

First Service: Wheel Bearing Work Puts the Layout to the Test

The first real test of the setup came a few months later with wheel bearing service on one of the trucks in the collection. Wheel bearing work needs the vehicle fully off the ground with wheels free to spin, good lighting, and enough space around the lift to maneuver a press or a big torque wrench without banging into a wall or another parked car — exactly the kind of job that exposes a bad layout fast.

It didn’t expose one. The clearance we’d planned around the widest vehicle gave plenty of room to work on the truck’s wheel wells from multiple angles, and the arm configuration reached the factory lift points without any awkward positioning. The owner told us afterward that the bay felt more like a small shop than a converted storage garage, which was the goal from day one — a 12000 lb 2 post lift that serves double duty as both storage support and a real service station.

What We’d Tell Other Collectors Planning This Same Project

Looking back on the first year, the biggest lesson is that layout planning deserves as much attention as picking the lift model. Collectors often assume the hard decision is brand and capacity, but a 12000 lb 2 post lift installed in the wrong spot, with the wrong column spacing for the vehicles you actually own, causes daily friction that a bigger, more expensive lift wouldn’t fix.

We’d also tell anyone in this situation to think past the vehicles currently in the garage. Collections grow, and wheelbases and vehicle widths vary more than people expect when they’re only picturing the cars they own today. Building in margin on arm reach and column clearance during the initial install costs very little compared to redoing a layout later, and it’s the difference between a lift that quietly works for a decade and one that needs constant workarounds.
