Why This Builder Chose a 2 Car 4 Post Lift Over a 2-Post

His original plan was a 2-post lift, but once we talked through his fleet, a 2 car 4 post lift made more sense. His trucks run 35-inch tires, aftermarket bumpers, and sliders, which shift lift points around and complicate arm placement on a 2-post. A 4-post lift uses runways instead of arms, so there’s no guessing where to place pads under armor or skid plates. You just drive up onto the platform.

The bigger factor was storage. He wanted one rig parked overhead most of the time and a second truck free to drive in and out underneath for brake work, oil changes, and general wrenching. A 2 car 4 post lift solves both problems at once — it’s a storage rack and a working platform in one footprint, which matters in a pole building shop where floor space is tight once you account for a workbench, tire rack, and tool chest. For a build-heavy garage with multiple project trucks, that flexibility beats a 2-post every time.

Brake Service and Rotor Swaps on a Raised Platform

Brake work is where the runway design actually shines. With the truck raised on the platform, there’s full access to all four corners without a tech crouching under a frame or fighting an arm that’s in the way of a caliper bracket. Rotor swaps go faster because you can walk completely around the vehicle at a comfortable working height, spin the rotor by hand, and torque lug nuts without kneeling on concrete.

For off-road builds specifically, bigger brake kits and upgraded rotors are common, and that extra hardware needs room to clear. A flat runway with no arms in the way gives techs the space to work with impact guns, spring compressors for caliper brackets, and torque wrenches without repositioning the vehicle. We specced this particular 2 car 4 post lift with a rolling bridge jack so he could pick up either end of the truck independently for rotor and pad changes without dropping the whole platform, which is the setup we recommend anytime brake service is a regular part of the job.

Arm Restraints and Safety-Cam Engagement, Explained

This is the piece people skip past in the manual and shouldn’t. On a 4-post lift, the safety mechanism isn’t a locking arm like a 2-post — it’s a ratcheting safety cam or a locking pin system built into the columns that engages automatically as the platform rises. Every notch it passes, the cam catches, so even if hydraulic pressure were lost, the platform sits on mechanical support, not fluid alone.

The mistake we see most in home shops is raising the lift only enough to work, then leaving it resting on hydraulic pressure instead of running it up one more notch so the safety cams fully engage. We walk every customer through this during install and again at handoff — raise it, then lower slightly onto the lock, confirm both sides show the pin or cam seated, and only then get underneath. For a builder running heavier trucks with more unsprung weight from armor and winches, that margin matters even more, and we don’t sign off on an install until the customer has done it themselves in front of us.

Sizing Capacity for Lifted Trucks and Overlanding Rigs

Weight capacity gets more complicated once you’re adding steel bumpers, a winch, roof racks, and gear storage. A stock half-ton might run 5,500 to 6,500 pounds, but add off-road armor and a loaded roof rack and you can push past 7,500 pounds fast. We sized this builder’s lift at 9,000 pounds rated capacity specifically because his heaviest build, once fully kitted for overlanding trips, was creeping close to 8,000 pounds with fuel, water, and gear aboard.

Don’t size to the truck as it sits on the lot — size to the truck as it sits loaded for a trip. A 2 car 4 post lift rated for 9,000 pounds gives headroom for both vehicles without forcing a customer to unload gear every time they need to raise it for service. We’d rather quote slightly above what a customer thinks they need than have them regret a tight capacity margin two years into ownership.

Concrete, Clearance, and Pole Building Realities

Pole buildings bring their own set of considerations. This shop had a standard concrete slab, and we confirmed thickness and cure time before finalizing the install, since 4-post lifts distribute weight through the runway legs rather than anchoring into a small footprint the way a 2-post does. Ceiling height is the other constraint that trips people up — with 12-foot sidewalls, we had to account for platform height, vehicle height, and roof rack or antenna clearance before locking in the model.

We also talked through mobility. Some 4-post platforms can be configured with casters so the whole unit rolls to a different spot in the shop, which appealed to him since he occasionally rearranges the building for larger projects. It’s a feature worth asking about up front, because retrofitting casters after a fixed install is a bigger job than building it in from day one. Getting the Second Bay Ready for Daily Driving

The whole point of a 2 car 4 post lift is that the lower bay stays usable day to day, not just during service. This builder wanted to drive a daily-driver truck in and out underneath the stored rig without any hassle, which meant we paid close attention to approach ramps, runway width, and the placement of the lift relative to his garage door and workbench.

We also talked about what goes on the platform overhead. If a truck is going to sit stored for weeks at a time, tire choice, jack stand backups, and periodic brake bleeding are worth planning for so a vehicle doesn’t sit static long enough to develop flat-spotted tires or a soft pedal. None of that is complicated, but it’s the kind of detail that separates a lift that gets used well from one that becomes a source of frustration six months in.

What Ongoing Ownership Looks Like

Once the platform was installed and the builder was running both trucks through it regularly, our conversation shifted to maintenance. Cables, pulleys, and hydraulic lines on a 4-post lift need periodic inspection, especially in a shop that sees heavier-than-average vehicles cycling through. We recommend a look at cable tension and hydraulic fluid levels every few months for a shop running builds in the 8,000-plus pound range, more often than we’d tell someone lifting a stock daily driver.
