Every 2 car 4 post lift quote we write starts with the same question: what’s your clearance from the floor to the lowest point of your ceiling, including any trusses, ductwork, or lighting that hangs down? A shop with 16-foot walls but 14-foot trusses running across the bay doesn’t have 16 feet to work with, it has 14, and that number changes which lift fits. For an RV and trailer shop lifting pickups and mid-size trailers, you typically need enough overhead room for the vehicle’s height, the platform height when raised, and a few feet of margin for a tech standing on the top deck without ducking.

We measure twice on every quote like this because a 4 post lift that’s too tall for the space is a lift you can’t fully raise, which defeats the point of parking a second vehicle underneath. If the door track or the door panel intrudes into the bay when it’s open, and your lift’s runways sit close to that door, you can end up with a vehicle parked on the lift that blocks the door from fully retracting, or a door that clips the top of a raised vehicle on its way in. A lot of buyers think about a 2 car 4 post lift purely as storage, but this shop needed it to actually work on vehicles too, specifically pulling and repacking wheel bearings on trailers and tow vehicles. That changes the spec conversation, because storage-only decks don’t always need the rolling bridge jack, but service decks do. We speced this unit with a sliding jack that runs the length of the platform so techs can pick up an axle anywhere along the deck, drop the wheel, and get a hub off without fighting for space.

Wheel bearing work also means the tech needs to get underneath the raised vehicle comfortably, so we paid attention to how much daylight the lift gave between the ground and the underside of a loaded platform. Too little clearance and you’re working on your knees with a creeper that barely fits; enough clearance and a tech can roll a stool under there and work like it’s a real service bay. That’s the difference between a lift that looks good in a brochure and one that actually earns its keep in daily bearing and brake work.

The First-Year Reality: What Changed After Install

The install itself went in about a day and a half, columns anchored, hydraulics run, safety locks tested on both decks. But the real story is what happened over the following months. The shop initially planned to use the top platform mostly for overflow storage during busy season, keeping the ground level open for service work. Within a few weeks they’d flipped that plan, running wheel bearing jobs on the lower level constantly and using the top deck for anything that just needed to sit and wait for parts.

That flexibility is the whole point of a 4 post platform over a single-vehicle 2 post unit in a shop like this. You’re not locked into one use case, and as the shop’s mix of storage versus service work shifted through the seasons, the lift didn’t care. It just kept doing whatever job that week required, which is exactly what you want from equipment that took up a meaningful chunk of your building budget.

Concrete and Anchoring Considerations for Iowa Shops

We haven’t mentioned concrete yet, but it matters just as much as ceiling height. A 2 car 4 post lift puts significant point loads down through its columns, and older Iowa shop floors, especially ones poured decades ago for lighter equipment, sometimes need evaluation before we anchor anything. In this case the floor was a newer 5-inch pour with decent rebar, which gave us confidence in the anchor spec without additional reinforcement.

If your shop has an older or thinner slab, that doesn’t automatically rule out this kind of lift, but it does mean we’re going to ask more questions and possibly recommend a different anchor pattern or a professional slab assessment first. We’d rather have that conversation on the front end than get a call a year later about hairline cracks radiating from a column base. It’s a boring detail compared to talking about hydraulics and lift capacity, but it’s the one that keeps the whole system safe for years of daily use.

Choosing Capacity for Trucks, Trailers, and Everything Between

RV and trailer shops rarely lift just one type of vehicle, and that variety pushed this particular buyer toward a higher capacity rating than a typical home garage would need. We talked through their actual fleet mix, heavier pickups, occasional dual-axle trailers, and the rare diesel service truck, and landed on a rating with real margin above their heaviest regular vehicle rather than cutting it close.

That margin matters more on a 2 car 4 post lift than people expect, because the rated capacity typically applies per platform, and a shop that grows into bigger trucks or adds a service contract for larger fleet vehicles doesn’t want to outgrow their lift in year two. We’d rather quote slightly above current needs than have a shop call back asking if their new equipment fits.

If you’re shopping for a 2 car 4 post lift for a shop that does real service work, not just storage, start with your building’s numbers before you start comparing model names. Get your ceiling height measured at the lowest obstruction, check your door swing against where the lift will actually sit, and be honest about what your floor is made of. Those three things narrow your options fast and save you from falling in love with a lift that simply won’t fit your building.

From there, tell your installer what kind of work you’ll actually be doing on the lower deck, because a lift set up purely for storage won’t serve a shop that’s pulling wheel bearings weekly. We’d rather ask a dozen extra questions up front than deliver a lift that needs a workaround on day one. That’s how this West Des Moines shop ended up with a setup that’s handled both storage and service without complaint through its entire first year.
