What Overhead and Baseplate Actually Mean

An overhead-style 2-post lift runs a structural beam across the top of both columns, tying them together above the vehicle. That beam is what gives the lift its rigidity — the columns can’t spread apart under load because the overhead connects them. A baseplate lift, on the other hand, ties the columns together through a steel plate bolted into the floor instead of a beam overhead. Both styles do the same fundamental job: lift a car symmetrically from two columns. The difference is entirely in where the structural connection lives and what that means for your ceiling.

For a restoration shop doing body work, this matters more than most buyers realize going in. If you’re pulling a body off a frame, sliding a rotisserie cart underneath, or running a crane over the vehicle for engine or frame work, an overhead beam can get in the way at exactly the wrong moment. A baseplate configuration leaves that airspace completely open. If your slab is older or thinner, that’s a real consideration, not a formality. Weight Capacity for the Vehicles You Actually Restore

Restoration projects run a wide range — a lightweight vintage roadster is nothing like a full-size truck or a body-on-frame classic loaded with lead filler and undercoating. We ask about slab thickness and rebar on every quote, because a lift rated for 10,000 pounds means nothing if the anchors are set into cracked or thin concrete.
