ALI Gold Myths: What a Waterloo Euro Shop Got Wrong About 2 Post Lifts

A European-marque specialty shop in Waterloo asked us to look at a 2 post car lift they had bought used from an auction two counties over, and within about ten minutes we had found four things wrong that all traced back to the same root cause: nobody had ever asked whether the equipment was actually certified. The owner assumed a gold-colored sticker on the column meant something official. It did not. That conversation is the reason for this article. We install and stock parts for lifts across northeast Iowa, and the mistakes we see repeat themselves so reliably that we can almost predict them from the first phone call. Here are the big ones, myth by myth, with the exhaust and driveline access issues that matter most to a Euro shop.

Myth 1: “ALI Gold” is a marketing badge

It is not. ALI — the Automotive Lift Institute — runs a third-party certification program in which an independent lab tests a specific lift model against ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards for structural integrity, overload, load-holding, and safety mechanisms. A model that passes carries the ALI Gold Label, and that label is model-specific and serial-traceable. It is not a brand-wide blanket, and it is not something a manufacturer can print for itself.

What we found in Waterloo was a gold-ish decal that was purely decorative on an import model that had never been through certification. The practical consequences are real. If a lift fails and an inspector or an insurance adjuster asks for the certification record, there is nothing to produce. Some commercial insurance policies and many manufacturer warranty programs on adjacent equipment reference certified lifting equipment specifically. And if you ever get an OSHA visit after an incident, “we thought it was certified” is a bad answer. The fix is straightforward: look up the model number in ALI’s online directory before you buy. It takes two minutes. If the model is not listed, it is not certified, no matter what the sticker looks like. We check this for every unit we quote, and we will check it for a used lift you are considering too — no charge, just call. It has saved several shops from a purchase they would have regretted.

Myth 2: capacity is the only spec that matters

Buyers fixate on the number stamped on the column. A caller once told us his heaviest vehicle was 6,000 lb and asked whether a 9,000 lb model was enough — yes, comfortably. But capacity alone tells you almost nothing about whether a lift will work in your bay or on your vehicles. Arm reach, minimum pad height, maximum rise, column spacing, and drive-through width matter just as much, and for European cars they matter more.

Consider a low-slung German sedan with a plastic underbody tray and factory jack points set well inboard. If your arms cannot swing tight enough or your pads cannot drop low enough, you cannot safely lift it at all — capacity is irrelevant. Drop-end arms and telescoping screw pads exist precisely for this. On the other end, a long-wheelbase van needs enough arm extension that the rear pads reach the proper lift points without cantilevering. We have watched techs stack blocks on pads to make up the difference, which is exactly how vehicles come off lifts. The right approach is to list the three or four vehicles that live in your bay most often, find their factory lift points, and match the lift’s arm geometry to those points. Capacity is a floor, not a spec sheet. On a properly matched 2 post car lift, every vehicle you service should reach its factory points with the pads at their designed height and the arm restraints engaged.

Myth 3: any 2 post car lift gives you the same access

For exhaust and driveline work — a large share of what a Euro specialty shop does — access is the entire point. Two post designs are unbeatable here because there are no runways under the vehicle. But not all of them are equal. An overhead clearfloor model gives you a completely unobstructed floor, which matters when you are sliding a full exhaust system out from under a car or dropping a driveshaft and need to walk it out sideways. A baseplate model puts a low channel across the floor between the columns — small, but it is exactly where your transmission jack casters want to be.

The Waterloo shop had a baseplate unit in a bay with a fourteen-foot ceiling, which is a mistake in the other direction: they had the height for an overhead and gave up floor clearance for nothing. Baseplate exists to solve low-ceiling problems. One buyer we worked with had a 139-inch maximum height and genuinely had no choice — baseplate was the only option. If you have twelve feet or more of clear ceiling, take the overhead. Also think about the shutoff bar: a padded overhead safety bar protects roofs and windshields on tall vehicles, and on a low car it is simply out of the way. Access is a design choice you make at purchase, and it is very expensive to change after the anchors are in the floor. Spend the extra thought now.

Myth 4: concrete is concrete

This is the one that gets people hurt. Manufacturers specify minimum slab thickness and concrete strength — typically four inches of 3,000 PSI or better, and more for higher-capacity models — and those numbers are not padded for comfort. Anchor bolts develop their holding power through embedment depth and surrounding concrete mass. Thin slabs, cracked slabs, and slabs with a rebar-free lightweight topping do not hold.

We hear “about five inches, maybe less” a lot. A shop owner in northern Missouri told us exactly that, and “maybe less” is a reason to drill a test hole before anything gets anchored. Another buyer described six to eight inches, which is comfortable — but the only way to know is to measure. Watch for slabs poured in sections with a control joint running right where a column wants to sit, for post-tension cable in newer construction, and for old garage floors with a thin skim coat over gravel. All of these are fixable. Cutting out a pad and pouring a proper footing per the manufacturer’s drawing costs a fraction of what most people fear, and it is the difference between a lift you trust and one you think about every time a car goes up. Myth 5: certified means maintenance-free

ALI Gold certification tests a design. It does not maintain your equipment. The most common service calls we take are things a five-minute weekly walk-around would catch. Equalization cables stretch, and when one side climbs faster than the other, that is your warning. Lock dogs stop engaging cleanly when the release cables go out of adjustment or the pivots dry out. Carriage slide blocks wear and let the carriage rock in the column. Cylinder seals weep, and people wipe the puddle instead of ordering a seal kit.

A customer called us about a Challenger unit that would not rise even though the motor ran, the fluid level was fine, and nothing was leaking. That combination usually means air in the system, a stuck lowering or check valve, or a worn pump — not a hydraulic leak. We had him bleed it and check the lowering valve before selling him anything, and that solved it. That is the kind of triage that separates a parts distributor who actually works on lifts from a website with a shopping cart. Certification is your starting point; annual inspection by a certified lift inspector and a short monthly checklist are what keep a 2 post car lift safe in year ten. Write the checklist down and tape it to the column — cables, locks, anchors, hoses, pad condition. It takes less time than a coffee break.

Myth 6: used is always the smart buy

Sometimes it is. We have installed plenty of well-maintained used commercial units that had another two decades in them, and if you find a documented Rotary or Challenger from a shop that closed, that can be a genuinely good deal. But the auction lift the Waterloo shop bought is the cautionary version: no model documentation, no certification listing, mismatched cables, and a power unit from a different manufacturer entirely. By the time they sourced correct parts, they were within a few hundred dollars of a new certified lift with a warranty.

Our rule of thumb is simple. Buy used only if you can identify the exact make, model, and serial number; verify the model in the ALI directory; confirm that cables, locks, and cylinders are current catalog parts; and see the lift operate under load before money changes hands. Missing any one of those, walk away. New equipment in the entry tier is more affordable than it was five years ago, and financing a certified 2 post car lift beats fighting an orphan. What we told the Waterloo shop to do

Our recommendation was to decommission the auction lift rather than try to certify the uncertifiable, and replace it with a new asymmetric clearfloor unit sized to their actual fleet — mostly German sedans and wagons, with the occasional light SUV. Asymmetric got them door clearance on tight European bodies. Clearfloor got them the unobstructed floor they needed for exhaust and driveline work. Drop-end arms with telescoping screw pads got them under low front valances without stacking anything.

We also spec’d new footing pads for two column locations where the existing slab had a control joint in the wrong place, and set them up with a stocked shelf of wear parts: a spare cable set, a lock dog kit, and a cylinder seal kit. That last part surprised them, but a shop that keeps three days of parts on hand does not lose a bay for a week waiting on freight. The whole project came in well under what they expected, largely because the concrete work was cheaper than they feared.
