First honest question: should storage even be a two-post job?
We will talk you out of a sale when it’s the wrong tool. If the only purpose is parking one car above another and you never plan to turn a wrench underneath, a four-post is usually the better buy. Four-post runways let you drive on and drive off, tolerate thinner concrete, and can be ordered with casters so you can roll the whole thing to a different wall. For pure storage, that convenience wins.
Where a 2 post car lift takes over is when storage is only half the mission. If you want to pull wheels, drop an exhaust, do bodywork on rocker panels, or change oil without a creeper and a jack, a two-post is dramatically better because the wheels hang free and you have unobstructed access to the entire underside. Almost every hobbyist we talk to eventually admits that’s the real reason — the storage argument is what they use on their spouse. A two-post also has a smaller floor footprint when it’s empty, since there are no runways sitting in your way. The tradeoff is that raising and lowering takes more care, arms have to be positioned at proper lift points every time, and the concrete requirements are stricter. Be honest with yourself about which mission dominates, because it changes the answer.
Northwest Iowa realities: ceilings, slabs, and cold shops
Farm shops and pole buildings across northwest Iowa often have better ceiling height than city garages, and that’s a genuine advantage. Fourteen feet gives you overhead clearfloor options with room to spare. At 11 to 12 feet you’re looking at a baseplate configuration or accepting that you won’t raise a tall vehicle to full height. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak — garage door tracks, sprinkler lines, and light fixtures are what actually stop you, and we’ve seen a buyer with a 13-foot ridge discover the door opener sat at 10 foot 2.
Slab thickness is the deal-breaker more often than height. A standard 10,000 lb two-post needs 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, cured 28 days, with anchors set away from control joints and slab edges. Owner-poured farm shop floors are frequently thicker than code — we hear six and eight inches regularly — but they’re sometimes poured over frost-heaved fill without rebar. Drill a test hole before you order. If the slab is short, cutting and pouring two footing pads is a normal, affordable fix and far cheaper than discovering the problem with a lift already on the trailer. Cold matters too: unheated shops thicken hydraulic fluid, so plan on slower first cycles in January and consider a lighter-weight fluid if the shop routinely sits below freezing. What the equipment itself costs at each tier
Pricing on a 2 post car lift sorts into three honest tiers. The entry tier is imported 9,000 to 10,000 lb baseplate and clearfloor units, typically Atlas or comparable, and buyers in this range are generally shopping around the four to five thousand dollar mark for equipment. These are perfectly serviceable for a hobby shop lifting a 3,000 to 6,000 lb vehicle a few dozen times a year. Fit and finish is basic, powder coat is thinner, and parts support depends heavily on who you buy from.

Then there’s the electrical. Most two-posts want a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit, and if your shop panel is on the far wall, that’s an electrician’s afternoon. Anchors, epoxy, and a rotary hammer for concrete drilling add up if you don’t own the tools. Professional installation is optional — plenty of capable people set their own lift, and we sell to DIY installers regularly — but it typically runs a modest fraction of the equipment cost and includes anchor torque verification, cable equalization, and a functional safety check. In a twenty-year model, that one-time install expense amortizes to nearly nothing. Call it two cable sets across twenty years. Sheave bushings get replaced with the cables. Anchor bolts get torque-checked annually and rarely need replacement unless the concrete cracked.
The power unit is the item most likely to need attention. Motors and pumps on entry-tier units sometimes go at ten to twelve years; better units regularly go twenty. A replacement power unit is the single largest maintenance line item you should plan for, and it’s still a fraction of a new lift. Cylinder seals may need a rebuild once. Add it all up and a well-chosen 2 post car lift in a hobby shop typically costs a few thousand dollars in parts across twenty years — meaningfully less than the depreciation on the vehicle you’re storing on it. The variable that wrecks this math is buying from a source that vanishes. If you can’t get a cable, a seal kit, or a power unit for your specific model in year fourteen, the lift becomes scrap regardless of how sound the steel is.
Resale value and the exit math nobody calculates
Used two-posts hold value better than almost any other shop equipment, and that changes the twenty-year picture substantially. A clean, ALI-certified, name-brand unit with documented maintenance and original manuals routinely resells for half to two-thirds of what it cost new, even after a decade of light hobby use. Unbranded imports with no serial tag and no parts availability sell for scrap-plus-a-little, because the buyer knows they’re gambling.
Run the numbers with resale included and the premium tiers look even better. Spend more up front on a Rotary or BendPak, use it lightly for twenty years, sell it for a solid chunk, and your net cost of ownership can land below the cheap unit that you eventually cut up with a torch. For a northwest Iowa hobby shop storing a classic over winter and doing occasional maintenance, here’s our default recommendation. Capacity: 10,000 lb, even if the heaviest vehicle is 6,000. The extra margin costs little and covers the pickup you’ll inevitably want to service. Configuration: clearfloor overhead if you have 12-plus feet to the lowest obstruction, baseplate if you’re tighter or if you want a truly flat floor for rolling toolboxes. Arms: asymmetric or versymmetric, so doors open past the columns — important when a car sits parked up there for six months and you want to get in it occasionally.
Add-ons worth the money: drip trays if you’re storing a car above a car, a truck adapter set if trucks are in the mix, and a set of tall pad extensions. Skip the air-line kits and light bars unless you’ll genuinely use them. Then plan for the boring stuff — annual anchor torque check, quarterly glance at the cables, keep the safety latches clean and lubricated, and never leave a vehicle parked on the hydraulics without the mechanical locks engaged.
