An EV specialty shop owner near the Iowa-Nebraska border called us last spring because his 2 post car lift had just failed an annual inspection on a single line item: equalizer cables. He was frustrated, and honestly he had a right to be. Nobody had ever told him what the cables were supposed to look like, how often they should be checked, or what “replace” actually means when a third-party inspector writes it on a form. That conversation is one we have a dozen times a year, and it almost always ends with the same realization — the myths people believe about lift cables are far more dangerous than the cables themselves. Myth #1: Cables Only Matter If They Look Frayed

The most common thing we hear is that a cable is fine until you can see broken wire strands sticking out. That is the last stage of failure, not the first. Equalizer cables on a two-post fail from the inside out and from the ends inward. Internal corrosion, work-hardening at the sheave contact points, and stretched swaged fittings all show up long before a visible broken strand does. On the EV shop’s columns, the cables looked perfectly fine to the naked eye. What the inspector caught was that one cable had elongated enough that the carriages sat almost an inch out of level at full height — a classic sign of stretch, not fraying.

The real inspection method is a combination of measurements and feel. We run a rag along the length looking for snags, check the swage at both terminations for cracking or drawn-out wire, look at the sheave grooves for wear that indicates misalignment, and then check carriage level top and bottom. If one side is consistently high, the cable on that side has stretched or the opposite one has. A shop that only looks for fraying on their 2 post car lift will pass their own visual and still fail a professional inspection, which is exactly what happened here.

Myth #2: Cables Hold the Car Up

This one causes more confusion than any other, and it changes how people think about risk. On a standard two-post, the equalizer cables do not carry vehicle weight. The hydraulic cylinders do that. The cables exist to keep the two carriages moving together — they synchronize the columns so the vehicle stays level as it rises. That is why a stretched cable shows up as an out-of-level condition rather than an immediate drop hazard.

That said, dismissing cables as “just synchronization” is the second half of the mistake. When cables stretch unevenly, the vehicle loads unevenly onto the arms, the safety locks on one column may not engage at the same tooth as the other, and the mechanical latch on the high side can carry the entire load through a single point it was never designed to hold alone. We have pulled arms off lifts where the pad had walked out of position because the platform was tilted a full degree at height. On a 2 post car lift running six or eight vehicles a day through annual state inspections, that geometry error compounds. So the honest answer is that cables do not lift the car, but bad cables absolutely create the conditions for something else to fail. That distinction matters when you are deciding whether a replacement can wait another quarter.

Myth #3: There Is No Real Replacement Interval

Manufacturers publish inspection intervals, not hard replacement mileage, and shops read that as permission to run cables forever. In practice, we recommend a documented daily visual by the operator, a monthly hands-on check by the shop lead, and a full annual inspection by a qualified inspector — that last one is what most state and insurance requirements actually key on. Replacement is condition-based, but the conditions repeat predictably enough that we can give ranges.

In a busy general service bay running twenty to forty cycles a day, we typically see equalizer cables need replacement somewhere in the five to eight year window. In a low-volume specialty shop like the EV operation on the border, ten to twelve years is realistic — but only if the environment is dry. Humidity, salt tracked in off winter roads, and floor washing with anything caustic will cut those numbers roughly in half. We have replaced cables at three years in a truck wash bay and found original cables in fine shape at fifteen years in a heated hobby garage. When you buy cables, buy them in pairs. Replacing one and leaving the other means two different stretch profiles working against each other, and you will be back at the same out-of-level condition within a year. That is money wasted twice.

Myth #4: Any Cable of the Right Length Will Work

We get calls where someone has already bought generic aircraft cable and swaged their own ends. Please do not do this. Equalizer cables are a specific construction — usually 7×19 or similar, with a specified diameter and a professionally swaged, load-rated terminal on each end. The adjustment threads and the stud length have to match your column’s anchor points, and the overall length has to be right within a fraction of an inch or you will run out of adjustment thread before the carriages are level.

The other trap is assuming that all lifts from one brand share one cable. They do not. A Rotary SPO12 does not use the same cable as an SPOA10, and BendPak changed cable specs across generations of the XPR series. When someone calls us with a model number but no serial, we usually still have to ask about the year and the column height, because a 10,000 lb clearfloor column and a two-stage telescoping column carry different cable routings. Myth #5: An Inspection Failure Means the Lift Is Junk

Shop owners panic when an inspector red-tags a lift. The assumption is that a failed annual inspection means it is time to spend five figures on a replacement. In our experience, the overwhelming majority of failures on a two-post are wear-item failures — cables, arm restraint gears, worn pads, a leaking cylinder seal, a lock latch that no longer engages cleanly, or missing safety decals. All of those are parts, and parts are cheap relative to a new installation.

The EV shop’s fix cost a fraction of what he had budgeted for panic mode: a pair of equalizer cables, new arm restraint pins, and a fresh set of decals. We shipped the cables, walked him through the adjustment sequence, and he re-certified within two weeks. Where we do tell people to replace rather than repair is when the structure itself is compromised — cracked welds at the base plate, elongated anchor holes, a bent column, or a lift so old that the manufacturer no longer exists and no one makes the safety lock components. If your 2 post car lift is a 1980s asymmetric with a discontinued lock assembly, we will tell you straight that repair parts are a dead end. Otherwise, get a real inspection report, price the parts, and you will usually be back in service for well under a tenth of replacement cost.

What an Honest Annual Inspection Actually Covers

Because cables get all the attention, people assume the annual is a cable check. It is not. A proper annual on a 2 post car lift covers anchor bolt torque against the manufacturer’s spec, concrete condition around each anchor, column plumb, weld and structural integrity, cylinder and hose condition, power unit function, all safety locks engaging simultaneously and holding, arm restraint engagement, swing arm play, pad condition and height, overhead shutoff bar or baseplate assembly function, and the presence of legible capacity and warning labels.

The reason this matters for shops doing annual state inspections is documentation. Insurers and, in some cases, state programs want to see a dated inspection record from a qualified inspector, not a shop-internal checklist. We do these inspections across Iowa and into the surrounding states, and we write them up plainly: what passed, what needs attention now, what to watch. Nobody gets a sales pitch out of it. If your locks are fine and your cables have five years left, the report says that. The shops that get burned are the ones who skip the annual for three or four years running and then discover that four separate wear items all came due at once, right when a vehicle is sitting six feet in the air. Cable Care for Low-Cycle and Specialty Shops

The EV shop is a good example of a growing category: low-cycle, high-value work. They might only put fifteen or twenty vehicles on the lift in a week, but battery packs, subframes, and high-voltage components mean the vehicle sits at height for hours instead of minutes. Long dwell times at full extension put sustained tension on cables and locks in a way that quick oil-change cycles do not.

Our advice for those shops is specific. First, lower onto the mechanical locks every single time and never let the hydraulics hold a static load for hours. Second, keep the sheaves lubricated with the manufacturer’s recommended lubricant, because dry sheaves chew cable jackets faster than heavy use does. Third, if you work on packs and use a table under the vehicle, verify carriage level before you start torquing anything — a tilted platform will fight your table. Fourth, log every inspection. A dated notebook or a spreadsheet is enough, and it makes the annual go faster. Finally, keep a spare pair of cables on the shelf if downtime is expensive for you.
