Why a Collector Ends Up on a Two Post Instead of a Four Post
Almost every collector who calls us starts the conversation assuming they want a four post. It makes sense on paper — drive on, drive off, park a second car underneath, no arms to position. And for pure storage, a four post is the right answer. But the Ankeny customer wasn’t storing. He was working. Brake jobs, exhaust, suspension bushings, fluid changes, the occasional transmission drop. Every one of those jobs is harder on a four post because the runways are in the way of the wheels and the underside of the rockers.
Once we walked him through the actual job list, the decision made itself. A two post gives you wheels-free access, which means you can pull a wheel, spin a hub, and check a ball joint without repositioning anything. For a collector who does his own annual state inspections and pre-season shakedowns, that access is the whole point. We also talked honestly about the tradeoff: he’d lose the ability to stack two cars, and he’d need his slab verified. He decided that was fine. He had one bay and one project at a time. ALI Gold Certification and Why It Isn’t Marketing Fluff
The ALI Gold label is an Automotive Lift Institute certification, and it means an independent third party tested that specific lift model against ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards — load capacity, structural integrity, safety mechanisms, and the accompanying documentation. It is not a manufacturer claiming their own product is safe. It’s a certification body putting a serial-numbered gold label on the column after the model passed testing and after the plant passed a factory audit.
Collectors tend to shrug at this until we explain the insurance angle. If a car worth six figures comes off a lift in your garage, your homeowner’s carrier is going to ask questions. Having an ALI-certified unit with an intact gold label, a documented professional install, and an annual inspection record turns a bad conversation into a manageable one. It also matters for resale — a certified lift with paperwork sells; an uncertified import off a marketplace listing sits. The Pre-Install Survey: Ceiling, Slab, and Where the Car Actually Sits
Before we quote a 2 post car lift, we want three numbers: ceiling height, concrete thickness, and the height of the tallest vehicle you plan to lift. Install Day: What Actually Happens in Your Garage

The First Six Months: Small Things Collectors Learn
The learning curve on a two post is shorter than people expect, but it’s real. Our Ankeny customer’s first surprise was pad height. Restored cars with lowered suspension and original rocker trim don’t clear standard round pads, and drop-end arms or a set of low-profile adapters solve it. He bought a pad kit two weeks in. The second surprise was lift point discipline. On a modern unibody car the pinch weld points are obvious. On a 1960s frame car they’re not, and putting a pad on sheet metal will dent it. We check anchor bolt torque, cable tension and condition, sheave wear, lock engagement at every position, hydraulic fluid level and cleanliness, hose and fitting condition, arm restraint function, and the overall structure for cracks or deformation. It takes about an hour on a residential unit and produces a written record you keep with the lift documents.
On this one we found exactly two things. The anchor bolts had settled slightly and needed re-torque, which is completely normal in the first year as the concrete and the baseplate seat against each other. And the equalization cables had stretched a hair, enough that one carriage was running about a quarter inch high. Ten minutes with a wrench fixed both. No leaks, no lock wear, no cable fraying.
