Why Restoration Shops See Cylinder Failures Sooner

Metal and body work is hard on a hoist. Grinding dust, weld spatter, and undercarriage debris fall straight down onto the lift arms and, eventually, into the cylinder area if the boots and seals aren’t in good shape. We’ve pulled cylinders out of Quad Cities shops that were caked in fine metal dust from years of panel work, and that grit is exactly what chews through a top seal faster than normal wear would. Older lifts especially trip people up. A shop running a hoist from the 1990s or early 2000s may have a cylinder that’s been superseded, meaning the exact part number no longer exists but a direct cross-reference does. This is where buying from a dealer who’s also an installer pays off. We’ve measured enough cylinders in the field that we can usually identify a replacement from a photo and a tape measure, even on lifts that changed hands two or three times before landing in your bay.

Reading the Failure Before You Order

Not every leak is the same leak, and knowing where the fluid is coming from tells you what to buy. Fluid seeping from the top of the cylinder near the rod is almost always a worn top seal or a damaged wiper, and it’s often paired with a screen or snap ring that’s worked loose over time. Fluid at the base fittings usually points to a fitting or O-ring issue rather than the cylinder body itself, which is a much cheaper fix. If the lift runs but won’t raise the vehicle, and there’s fluid present without an external leak, that’s a different problem entirely — often air in the system or an internal bypass inside the cylinder rather than a seal failure you can see. We ask shops to describe exactly where the fluid appears, whether it’s constant or only during lifting, and whether the lift loses height overnight. Those details take five minutes on the phone and save you from ordering the wrong part or paying for a repair that doesn’t fix the actual failure.

Lift-Bay Layout: Planning Around Cylinder Access

Restoration shops often retrofit lifts into buildings that weren’t designed for them, and cylinder access becomes an afterthought until you actually need to service one. Column-mounted cylinders on most 2 post lifts are reachable without moving the lift, but shops that packed bays tightly for maximum floor space sometimes leave no room to swing a cylinder out during removal. We get calls regularly from shops that ordered a cylinder somewhere else, had it not fit or not seal correctly, and needed a second opinion on whether it was a defective part or an installation error. What to Have Ready Before You Call
