Half-shaft and CV axle jobs need the suspension hanging free. On a drive-on rack the wheels stay loaded, so you are working against a compressed suspension, fighting to get the axle out of the knuckle, and reaching around ramps and runways with a pry bar. Add jack trays and you have added a step to every job and a piece of equipment to maintain. A two-post picks the vehicle up by the frame or pinch welds and lets the control arms drop where they want to be. Boot replacements, inner joint clips, and hub nut access all get faster.
For a quick-lube operation adding light mechanical work, that time difference is the entire business case. A tech who can finish a front axle in ninety minutes instead of two and a half hours changes the math on whether the bay pays for itself. It also opens brake work, wheel bearings, exhaust, and suspension — everything a two-post is genuinely good at. The tradeoff is that you lose the ability to leave a car sitting on the lift overnight as storage, and you need to be more deliberate about lift point selection on the modern crossovers that make up most quick-lube traffic. Equipment Tiers: What You Get at Each Price Point
Let’s talk money in ranges, because the exact number depends on capacity, configuration, and freight. At the entry level — think low-to-mid four figures — you are looking at imported 9,000 to 10,000 lb symmetric units, often baseplate, with basic arms and a single-piece column. These work. Plenty of home shops and low-volume bays run them for years. What you are giving up is duty cycle, arm versatility, and long-term parts availability from a distributor who actually stocks the part when it breaks.
The middle tier — BendPak and Atlas clearfloor models in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb class — adds real conveniences: expandable top beam for narrow or wide drive-through, telescoping and drop-end arms, double-telescoping screw pads, padded overhead shutoff bars, single-point safety release. Cable Inspection and Replacement Intervals

Monthly, do a real inspection: check tension, look for broken wires, corrosion, flat spots, kinks, and birdcaging, and check that sheaves spin freely without wobble. Annually, have the lift inspected by a qualified technician per ANSI/ALI ALOIM guidelines — that annual inspection is not optional in a commercial setting, and your insurance carrier may ask for the paperwork.
Replacement interval depends on duty. A busy commercial bay running dozens of cycles a day should plan on equalization cables every five to seven years as preventive maintenance, sooner if inspection shows wear. Replace immediately, no discussion, if you find broken strands, visible corrosion pitting, a kink, or if adjustment is maxed out and the sides still will not level. Always replace cables as a matched set — never one side — and inspect the sheaves and pins at the same time, because a worn sheave will chew a brand-new cable in a year. The Rest of the Maintenance Budget
Cables are the headline item but they are not the whole story. Lock dogs and their springs wear and should engage crisply on every notch — if a lock is lazy or silent, that is a repair, not a quirk. Arm restraint gears wear round and stop holding the arms in position, which is how a pad walks off a pinch weld under load. Hydraulic hoses have a service life and should be replaced when they weep, bulge, or hit the manufacturer’s age recommendation. Cylinder seals eventually pass fluid, showing up as the lift settling slowly overnight.
Budget a small annual figure for fluid, filters, sheave lubrication, and the ALI inspection, plus a slightly larger reserve every few years for cables, hoses, or a cylinder reseal.
