A weekend hobbyist in central Iowa emailed us last fall about a 2 post car lift for a two-and-a-half-car garage. His use case was narrow and honest: he keeps a 1968 project car and two daily drivers, and every spring he does his own brake and suspension inspection before the cars go in for the annual safety check. He did not need a commercial-duty machine. What he did need — and what he had no idea how to evaluate — was the safety hardware: the arm restraints, the safety cam ladders, the lock engagement you can hear from across the bay. Those are the parts that keep a car from walking off the pads. Here is the pre-purchase checklist we gave him, in order.

Checklist Item One: Confirm the Arm Restraints Are Automatic

Arm restraints are the mechanism that keeps a swing arm from rotating out from under a vehicle once weight is on it. On a properly designed unit, the restraint is a spring-loaded gear or pin set that engages a toothed collar at the arm pivot the moment the arm starts to rise, and it will not release until the arm is fully lowered and unloaded. That is what “automatic” means, and it is what you want. Manual restraints — a pin you drop in a hole, or a gear you engage by hand — exist on older and cheaper equipment, and they are only as good as the operator’s memory on a Saturday afternoon.

When you look at any 2 post car lift, get down at the pivot and look at the gear teeth. Are they steel and coarse, or are they fine, stamped, and thin? Does the restraint have a visible spring return? Does it click audibly when you swing the arm? We have replaced restraint gears that were worn round from years of arms being forced against an engaged restraint, and once those teeth round off there is nothing holding the arm. If you are shopping used, this is the first thing to inspect and the most common reason we tell people to walk away. Restraint gears are a stocked replacement part on major brands — you can look them up in our parts catalog — but on off-brand imports from a decade ago, they often simply do not exist anymore.

Checklist Item Two: Understand How Safety Cams Actually Engage

The safety cam — sometimes called the lock dog, safety latch, or lock pawl — is the mechanical stop that catches the carriage on a toothed ladder inside each column. Hydraulics hold the car while you are raising it. The safety cams hold the car while you are working under it. Those are two different systems and only one of them is allowed to fail without consequence.

Here is what matters. First, the cams must engage automatically as the carriage passes each ladder tooth — you should hear a steady, rhythmic clack all the way up. If you hear it on one column and not the other, or the sound is irregular, something is bent, gummed, or out of adjustment. Second, spacing between ladder positions determines how much height you lose when you set down on the locks. Three-inch spacing means you might drop up to three inches; some designs use tighter increments. Third, the release has to be synchronized. Single-point release pulls both cams together from one handle, which is what you want, because a lift where you walk around and release each column separately can bind and load one side unevenly. Every 2 post car lift we sell uses a single-point release. Fourth, test the cams with a load, not empty. Raise a car, set it on the locks, then lower the hydraulics slightly so the locks take the full weight. That is the test that matters.

Checklist Item Three: Measure the Garage Before You Fall in Love

Central Iowa garages are frustratingly consistent: 9 to 11 feet of ceiling, a garage door track eating the first foot, and a slab poured by whoever got the job in 1994. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the bay — not the ridge, not the drywall peak. Door track, opener rail, light fixtures, and any ductwork all count.

Under about 11 feet six inches, a clear floor overhead design usually will not work, and you are looking at a baseplate model where the hoses and cables run across the floor between the columns. That is not a downgrade in safety at all; it is a downgrade in convenience. You roll over a two-and-a-half inch plate with every jack and toolbox. Plenty of hobby garages in Ankeny, Ames, and Des Moines run baseplate units happily for decades. Also measure width. You want at least 11 to 12 feet of bay width for a two-post, and more if you plan to open doors comfortably — that is where asymmetric arm configurations earn their keep, because they seat the car rearward so the doors clear the columns. Finally, measure your slab. Four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete is the floor for a 10,000 lb unit, and many manufacturers want more. Drill a test hole. Checklist Item Four: Capacity and Pad Height for the Cars You Own

The hobbyist in central Iowa had a heaviest vehicle around 4,500 lb — well under 3 tons. He asked whether a 7,000 lb rating would do. Technically yes. Practically, we steered him to 10,000, and the reason has nothing to do with weight. It has to do with resale, parts availability, and the fact that 10,000 lb is the volume tier of the entire industry. Arms are longer, columns are taller, adapters are easier to find, and if you sell the house in eight years, a 10,000 lb unit moves and a 7,000 sits.

Minimum pad height is the other spec to pin down before you buy, especially with a lowered classic or anything with rocker skirts. Look for the collapsed height of the arm pad — many land between 3.5 and 5 inches. Drop-end arms, where the outboard section steps down, get you the lowest starting height. If you are working on a car that a floor jack barely fits under, a 4.75-inch pad is going to require driving up on ramps or blocks every single time, which gets old fast. Also plan on buying a set of stackable rubber adapters up front. Pinch-weld frame cradles, truck adapters, and tall pads are cheap compared to the price of the equipment, and using the right adapter is a big part of what keeps a car sitting square on the arms.

Checklist Item Five: Daily Inspection Habits for a 2 Post Car Lift

Safety hardware only works if you look at it. The routine we teach on every install takes about ninety seconds and should happen before the first raise of the day. Walk both columns and look at the anchor bolts — are the nuts tight against the base plate, is there any spalling or cracking in the concrete around them? Look at the equalization cables where they pass over the sheaves at the top of each column for broken strands, fraying, or a loose lay. Look at the cylinder rods and hose fittings for weeping.

Then check the moving safety parts. Swing each arm and listen for the restraint gear to click. Raise the empty carriages a few feet and listen for both sets of safety cams clacking in rhythm. Pull the single-point release and confirm both columns drop together. Grease the arm pivot pins on a monthly schedule and keep the columns clean inside — dust and grit build up on the ladder teeth and in the cam pockets, and a cam that is packed with grime is a cam that hesitates. Once a year, pull the covers and inspect cables properly, check hydraulic fluid level, and verify anchor torque against the manufacturer spec. That is also the right interval for a professional inspection, which we do throughout central Iowa. A 2 post car lift that gets that treatment lasts twenty-five years. One that gets ignored fails, and it never fails at a convenient moment.

Checklist Item Six: Know What Fails and What It Costs to Fix

We field service calls every week, and the pattern is predictable. The most common call is “the motor runs but nothing lifts” — a Challenger owner called us with exactly that last spring, fluid full, no leaks, motor humming. Nine times out of ten that is air in the system, a stuck check valve, or a pump that is cavitating because the suction screen is clogged with varnish from twenty-year-old fluid. Cheap fix. The second most common is a lift that drifts down under load, which usually means cylinder seals, and that is a rebuild kit or a replacement cylinder.

Third is cables. Equalization cables stretch over time, and a stretched cable throws the carriages out of sync and can prevent one side’s safety cams from engaging cleanly. Cables are a wear item — budget on replacing them every ten to fifteen years in a hobby setting, sooner in a busy shop. Fourth is restraint gears and cam springs, both inexpensive but both critical. What we tell buyers is this: pick a brand whose parts you can still get. We stock parts for Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas, and we can source most of what a mainstream unit needs within days. If you buy a no-name 2 post car lift off a marketplace listing and the arm restraint gear breaks in year six, you may be looking at fabricating a part or scrapping the whole thing. That is the calculation that should shape your purchase, not the sticker.

Checklist Item Seven: Decide Whether You Are Installing It Yourself

A fair number of our customers do not want install service. They have a forklift or a skid steer, a rotary hammer, and a free weekend, and they would rather keep that money. That is a legitimate choice and we ship equipment on those terms constantly — one buyer up north told us plainly he did not need install, just delivery and a way to get it off the truck. If that is you, three things will determine whether it goes well.

First, verify the concrete before you drill, not after. Second, get the columns truly plumb and shim them properly, because a column that leans a quarter inch will bind the carriage and chew the ladder teeth. Third, bleed the hydraulics fully and then synchronize the safety cams per the manual — the two columns must lock at matching heights, and if they do not, you have a lift that racks the car every time you set it down. Add a loaded test cycle at full height before you ever crawl under it.
