Measure Your Ceiling Height Before You Fall in Love With a Lift
Alignment work means you need vehicles raised to full working height, and that eats ceiling clearance fast. Most 9,000-16,000 lb two-post lifts need a minimum of 12 to 14 feet of clear height to fully extend, and if you’re running an overhead-style unit instead of a baseplate model, add more for the crossbar. We’ve had calls from shops with beautiful 12-foot ceilings who wanted a tall SUV-friendly lift, only to learn the math didn’t work once you factor in the vehicle height plus arm travel.
Before you get a 2 post car lift installed, grab a tape measure and record the lowest point in your bay — not the peak of a gable roof, but any light fixture, duct, door track, or truss that hangs down. Also check overhead doors near the install location; a lift with the columns too close to a rolling door track has caused plenty of headaches on farm-shop retrofits we’ve handled in northeast and central Iowa. If your ceiling is tight, a baseplate two-post design without an overhead beam, or a mid-rise alternative, may fit your building better than a traditional overhead unit.
Know Your Concrete Before You Order
Concrete thickness and condition make or break an installation. Most manufacturers require a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured, unreinforced or reinforced structural concrete rated at 3,000 PSI or higher, with no expansion joints or cracks running through the anchor bolt pattern. Farm shops built decades ago sometimes have thinner slabs poured for tractors and hay wagons, not concentrated point loads from a two-post lift’s columns.
We always recommend having a core sample pulled or at minimum checking your original build records before you buy. If your slab is questionable, we can often still get a 2 post car lift installed by pouring a new footer pad under each column, but that adds cost and time you’ll want to plan for, not discover on install day. Rebar near the surface, like several Iowa shops we’ve serviced have, isn’t automatically disqualifying, but our installers need to know about it ahead of time so we bring the right anchoring hardware and drill bits.
Map Your Power and Confirm Voltage Requirements
Most commercial two-post lifts run on 220-volt single-phase power, though some heavier-duty and shop-specific units want three-phase. Rural properties on older service panels sometimes only have 220V available at one outbuilding, and if that’s not the building where you want your lift, you’re looking at an electrician trip before the installer ever touches a wrench. Confirm your amperage, breaker size, and outlet location relative to where the lift’s power unit will sit.
We ask every customer to send photos of their panel and the intended install bay before we quote. It takes five minutes and prevents a wasted service call. If you’re financing new construction or a pole barn specifically to house a lift, tell your electrician now that you’ll need a dedicated 220V circuit near the lift’s motor location — it’s far cheaper to run that wire during construction than to trench or surface-mount conduit afterward.
Plan Your Bay Width and Column Spacing
A two-post lift needs clear width on both sides of the columns for door swing on the vehicles you’ll actually service, plus room to walk around during alignment work. As a rule of thumb, we like to see at least 12 feet of clear width between the columns and any wall, tool chest, or support post, and closer to 14-16 feet total bay width for comfortable truck and dually clearance.
Farm shops often have support poles spaced for the building’s structure, not for equipment. Before you commit to a floor plan, sketch where the columns will land relative to those poles, your overhead door track, and any drains in the floor. We’ve relocated planned install spots more than once after a site visit revealed a support column would sit directly in the swing path of a lift arm. Getting this right on paper costs nothing; getting it wrong after the concrete work is done costs real money.
Decide Between Used, New, and Import Before You Call an Installer
We see a wide range of two-post lifts come through our install queue — from well-built Rotary units to imported lifts bought online. Imported models can be solid equipment, but replacement parts and warranty support are often slower or nonexistent compared to established brands. If you want a lift installed and serviced for the next fifteen or twenty years on a working farm, factor parts availability into your decision, not just the sticker price.
Used lifts are a great option if you know their service history and the unit isn’t missing safety components, but we always inspect cables, hydraulic cylinders, and locking mechanisms before signing off on an install. A lift that’s been sitting in a barn for two years needs a full inspection, not just a bolt-down. Whatever you choose, make sure your installer is comfortable with that specific brand — not every installer stocks parts or has experience with every import model on the market.
Get Your Site Survey Done Before You Schedule Install Day
The single best thing you can do before you get a 2 post car lift installed is request a site survey, even an informal one done over photos and a phone call. We ask about ceiling height, bay dimensions, concrete age and thickness, power availability, and the primary vehicles you’ll be lifting. That last point matters more than people expect — a shop that mostly services half-ton pickups needs different arm reach and lifting capacity than one focused on passenger cars for alignment work.
A thorough survey also flags scheduling issues early. If you need in-floor heat lines mapped before drilling anchors, or if you’re waiting on a concrete cure date, we’d rather know a month out than the morning our installer arrives with a truck. Rural jobs across the Dubuque area often involve extra drive time and coordination, so locking in accurate details up front keeps your install on schedule and avoids a second trip charge.
Ask About Anchoring, Certification, and Follow-Up Service
A two-post lift is only as safe as its anchors and its alignment to the floor. Ask any installer how they verify anchor torque, how they check that both columns are level and plumb to each other, and whether they provide any documentation after the job. A rushed install that skips proper torque specs or ignores a slightly out-of-level slab can lead to excessive cable wear or arm binding down the road.
We also recommend asking about post-install service. Cables stretch, hydraulic fluid needs monitoring, and safety latches need periodic inspection. A shop that only shows up once and disappears isn’t doing you any favors.
