If you’re planning to get a 2 post car lift installed in a rural shop outside Waterloo, the single biggest decision you’ll make before we ever show up with a truck isn’t the brand or the color — it’s whether you go overhead or baseplate. We’ve walked into more farm shops than we can count where the owner bought a lift online, got it delivered, and only then called us to figure out which configuration would even fit their building. This checklist is what we’d walk you through on the phone before you spend a dollar, so the lift you buy actually matches the shop you’re putting it in.

Why Ceiling Height Decides Everything First

Before you even think about overhead versus baseplate, measure your ceiling. We’ve had a 2 post car lift installed in shops with anywhere from 10 to 16 feet of clearance, and the number changes what’s even possible. An overhead-style lift needs a beam running between the tops of the columns, which eats vertical space — typically you want at least 12 feet of clearance to lift a full-size pickup with room to spare underneath. If your farm shop has 10 or 11 foot ceilings, an overhead unit will fight you every time you try to raise a taller truck for wheel bearing work.

Baseplate lifts remove that overhead beam entirely, which is why they’re the go-to for lower shops or anywhere you’re running an overhead door track or lighting close to the columns. We ask every rural customer the same three questions: ceiling height, door height, and whether you’ll ever run anything taller than a pickup through that bay. If the answer to the last one is a combine attachment or a tall livestock trailer, baseplate is usually the only configuration that keeps your lift usable long-term.

Overhead vs Baseplate: What Actually Changes Structurally

Overhead lifts have a cross-beam connecting the two columns near the top, which adds rigidity and lets the manufacturer use a lighter column design. That beam is also a built-in reminder to duck when you’re pulling a jacked-up truck through — plenty of shops have a scuff mark on that beam from a load that came in an inch too tall. For a wheel bearing service bay where trucks come and go all day, that overhead bar can become an obstacle, especially with roof racks or ladder racks.

Baseplate configurations anchor everything through a plate at the base of each column instead, giving you a clear-through opening with no overhead structure at all. The tradeoff is that baseplate lifts generally need a slightly wider footprint and, in some cases, a bit more attention to floor anchoring since the columns aren’t cross-braced up top. For a farm shop doing routine wheel bearing service, brake jobs, and general repair on pickups and equipment, we lean toward recommending baseplate more often than not once ceiling height is anywhere under 13 feet.

Concrete Thickness and Anchoring in Older Farm Shops

We’ve had a 2 post car lift installed in shops built decades ago where the slab is only 4 to 5 inches thick, sometimes with rebar sitting closer to the surface than anyone expected. Before we schedule any install, we ask about slab age, thickness, and whether there’s any known rebar or in-floor heat. A lift that’s rated for 9,000 or 10,000 lbs needs anchors set into concrete that can actually hold that load under repeated cycling, and older barns or pole-shed conversions don’t always have that.

If your slab is thin or cracked, we’ll talk through options — sometimes that means adding a reinforced pad under just the lift footprint, other times it means selecting a baseplate model specifically because its footprint spreads the anchor points wider and reduces point-loading on questionable concrete. This is exactly the kind of thing you want figured out before the lift arrives on a pallet, not after.

Bay Width and Vehicle Mix on a Working Farm

Rural shops rarely lift just one type of vehicle. One week it’s a half-ton pickup for wheel bearing service, the next it’s a flatbed dually or a piece of equipment nobody designed the lift for. Bay width matters more here than in a typical dealership bay — we generally want at least 24 to 30 feet of usable width for comfortable drive-through clearance with mirrors and toolboxes, especially if you’re parking anything else in that bay while the lift is in use.

Arm reach and lift capacity both need to match your heaviest regular vehicle, not your average one. If you occasionally lift a 3/4-ton dually with a service body, size the lift to that vehicle, not the sedan you drive to town. Undersizing a lift for one heavy outlier is one of the most common mistakes we see in farm shop installs, and it’s an expensive mistake to fix after the anchors are already set.

Power and Hydraulic Considerations Before Install Day

Most 2 post lifts in this capacity range run on 220V single phase power, and rural shops don’t always have that circuit run to the bay where the lift needs to go. We ask about existing electrical before scheduling, because running new circuit to a far corner of a pole barn can add real time to the day of install. It’s far better to know that in advance than to have a crew standing around waiting on an electrician.

Hydraulic fluid and cylinder setup also matter on install day — some lifts ship dry and need fluid on site, others arrive partially filled. When we get a 2 post car lift installed for a farm customer, we bring what’s needed and confirm ahead of time whether the customer already has hydraulic oil on hand or wants us to supply it, since that changes the quote.

What a Proper Install Day Actually Looks Like

On install day, we start by confirming the concrete meets spec, laying out the columns to the manufacturer’s exact bay width spec, and drilling anchors to the depth and pattern the lift requires — no shortcuts, no eyeballing. We square the columns, run and test the hydraulic system, calibrate the safety locks, and cycle the lift empty several times before it ever sees a vehicle. For overhead units we also torque and inspect the beam connection; for baseplate units we double-check anchor torque across all points since there’s no cross-brace to share the load.

We finish every install with a full walk-through covering safety lock operation, arm restraint use, and basic maintenance — because a lift that’s installed correctly but never explained right still ends up misused.
