Step One: What’s Your Real Budget, Not Your Wish List

Every decision tree starts with an honest number. Restoration shops tend to want the biggest, most flexible lift on the floor, but oil pan gasket work and general underside access on classic and collector cars doesn’t need a 15,000 lb commercial rig in most cases. If your heaviest project is a vintage truck or a big-block muscle car, a 10,000-12,000 lb symmetric or asymmetric two-post lift covers you with room to spare.

We ask Waterloo shops to set two numbers before we quote anything: total budget including installation, and the ceiling on what they’d spend if a slab issue or electrical upgrade comes up mid-project. Restoration work often means techs are in and out of the car repeatedly during a single job, checking fit, testing components, moving between the lift and a nearby bench. That back-and-forth is exactly why we lean asymmetric for most restoration bays doing engine and driveline work — the door clearance alone saves real time over a full week of gasket, seal, and pan jobs. It’s a small spec difference on paper that changes daily workflow in a way owners don’t appreciate until they’ve used both.

Step Three: Bay Layout — Column Placement and Clearance

Once capacity and configuration are set, bay layout becomes the next fork in the tree. A single 2 post car lift installed in the center of a bay needs clearance on all four sides for door swing, tech movement, and rolling tool carts — we generally recommend at least 3 feet of clear space beyond the vehicle’s widest point on each side, more if you’re running a jack and stands alongside for extra support during heavier teardown work.

Step Five: Overhead vs. Baseplate for Restoration Ceiling Heights

Restoration shops in converted buildings often have taller ceilings than a modern commercial garage, which usually makes overhead two-post lifts the simpler and less expensive install choice. But some older Waterloo buildings have low clearance in specific bays — support beams, old crane rails, or duct runs that eat into vertical space right where a lift needs to go.

In those tighter bays, a baseplate configuration skips the overhead crossbar entirely, trading a somewhat more involved hydraulic install for full vertical clearance.
