Most people shopping a 2 post car lift spend three weeks agonizing over capacity and brand, then spend about four minutes thinking about electrical — and electrical is where the install actually stalls. We ran into this again recently on a job for a mobile mechanic in central Iowa who bought a shop building to get off the road during winter. He had the slab, he had the ceiling height, he had the money set aside, and he had a 100-amp panel with almost nothing left in it. This is a walkthrough of that job: what we found, what the electrician did, what it cost in rough terms, and the power-related mistakes we see over and over from Ankeny to Council Bluffs.

The Building, the Panel, and the Reality Check

He had bought a former implement dealer’s outbuilding on the edge of a small town — good bones, decent slab, twelve and a half feet to the bottom of the trusses. His plan was one two-column unit for daily maintenance work: oil, brakes, suspension, exhaust, the bread and butter of a mobile business that was tired of doing it in gravel driveways in February. Heaviest thing he expected was a three-quarter-ton pickup, so a 10,000 lb rating was more than adequate.

Then we opened the panel. One hundred amps total, feeding a well pump, a small air compressor, shop lights, and a unit heater. Two open slots. His assumption — and this is the most common assumption we hear — was that a lift plugs into a regular wall outlet. It does not. A typical 10,000 lb power unit runs a 2 or 3 HP motor. On 220V single phase that pulls roughly 12 to 15 amps running, with a startup surge well above that. On 110V, the same horsepower would pull double the current and you would be tripping a 20-amp breaker every time you raised a truck. Some smaller units are offered in 110V configurations and they do work, but they raise slower and they are much harder on the circuit. For a shop that will cycle a lift twenty times a day, 220V single phase is the right answer and it is not close.

Single Phase vs Three Phase: What Actually Applies in Iowa

This question comes up on nearly every commercial quote. Three phase power is more efficient for motors, gives you smoother torque, and lets you run a smaller-gauge conductor for the same horsepower. If your building already has three phase service — common in older industrial buildings, tool-and-die shops, and anything that used to run big machinery — order the three phase power unit. It is usually the same price or within a small margin, and the motor will last longer.

If you do not have three phase, do not chase it. Getting the utility to bring three phase to a rural or light-commercial address in Iowa can run into serious money and months of lead time, and it is almost never justified by one 2 post car lift. Single phase 208-230V handles a 2 or 3 HP power unit without complaint. We install far more single phase units than three phase across the state, and none of them are underperforming. The one thing to watch: if you are ordering online, the voltage and phase are a configuration choice at checkout, not something you can flip later with a switch. A three phase motor cannot run on single phase power. We have unpacked crates in Iowa driveways and found the wrong motor more times than we would like, and the return freight on a power unit is not fun for anybody. Breaker Sizing and Wire Gauge for a 2 Post Car Lift

For his job, the electrician pulled a dedicated 30-amp double-pole breaker on 10 AWG copper for a run of roughly forty feet from the panel to a disconnect near the driver-side column. That is a common and conservative spec for a 220V single phase power unit in the 2 to 3 HP range. Some manufacturers list a 20-amp breaker as acceptable for shorter runs and smaller motors, and that is fine if the manufacturer’s manual says so — always follow the manual, because it is the document your inspector and your warranty both care about.

Wire gauge is where people cut corners and regret it. Voltage drop over a long run makes a motor work harder, run hotter, and fail early. As a rough rule, if your run from the panel exceeds about fifty feet, step up one wire size. Twelve gauge might be technically legal for a short 20-amp circuit but on a hundred-foot run to a detached shop it will cook. We also strongly recommend a lockable disconnect within sight of the equipment. It is required in many jurisdictions, it makes service work safe, and it means anybody doing maintenance on the power unit can positively kill power instead of trusting that nobody flips the breaker. Add a dedicated circuit, not a shared one. Sharing a lift circuit with an air compressor is a recipe for nuisance trips right when you have a truck in the air.

What the Electrical Upgrade Actually Cost Him

We do not quote electrical work — we coordinate with the customer’s licensed electrician and stay in our lane — but we can tell you the shape of it. His panel had two slots and not enough headroom, so the electrician swapped it for a 200-amp service and pulled the new lift circuit at the same time. Ballpark, a service upgrade of that scale in central Iowa lands in the low four figures, with the dedicated lift circuit itself being a few hundred dollars of that if it is done while the panel is already open.

That number stung until he did the math the other direction. Doing the circuit as a separate trip later would have cost more in mobilization alone, and the 200-amp service opened the door for a second bay, a bigger compressor, and a welder — all things he wanted within two years anyway. This is our standard advice: when you are already paying an electrician to be in the building, oversize the service. The marginal cost of going from 100 to 200 amps while the meter is already pulled is small. The cost of doing it again in eighteen months is not. Sequencing: Electrician First, Then Concrete, Then Us

The order of operations on this job saved him a week and a lot of frustration. We told him to have the electrician rough in the circuit and set the disconnect before we scheduled the install date, and to core the slab before either. His concrete came back at just over five inches with decent aggregate, which cleared the manufacturer’s minimum for a 10,000 lb unit, so no pads were needed. Had it come back thin, we would have had him pour pads and wait the full cure before we ever loaded a truck.

With power roughed in and concrete confirmed, our crew set columns, ran anchors to torque spec, plumbed the hydraulics, and had the electrician come back for the final motor connection and rotation check. On a three phase unit that rotation check matters — get the phases backward and the motor spins the wrong direction, which on a gear pump means no pressure and a very confusing ten minutes. On single phase it is not an issue. We cycled the lift unloaded, verified lock engagement on both columns at every height, then loaded it and cycled again. The whole install was done in a day because the two things that usually delay it — power and concrete — were already handled. That sequencing advice is free and it is probably the most valuable thing in this article.

Common Electrical Mistakes We See on Two-Post Installs

The first is running an extension cord. We have walked into shops where a 2 post car lift power unit was fed by a cord reel because the owner did not want to pay for a circuit. That is a fire risk and a motor killer, and it voids essentially every warranty in the industry. The second is undersizing the breaker to save fifty dollars, then living with nuisance trips forever and eventually deciding the lift is defective when the lift is fine.

The third is buying the wrong voltage. It happens most often with online purchases where the buyer clicked through the configuration screen quickly. The fourth is skipping the disconnect. The fifth — and this one is genuinely dangerous — is wiring a lift power unit into a circuit shared with something that runs continuously, so the combined load sits near the breaker limit and the breaker degrades over time. The sixth is not grounding properly, which on a piece of equipment with steel columns bolted to a concrete floor is not a theoretical concern. None of these are hard to avoid. They just require deciding the electrical side is part of the purchase rather than an afterthought. Where This Left Him, and What to Do Next

He has been running the shop through a full Iowa winter now. The lift goes up and down thirty or forty times a week on daily maintenance work — oil changes, brake jobs, front-end parts, exhaust. The motor has not tripped a breaker once. He kept a portion of his mobile business for fleet calls but the majority of his revenue now happens indoors with a vehicle at chest height, which is exactly what he was after.
