A tire and alignment shop owner in Cedar Falls called us last spring because he wanted a 2 post car lift in the third bay he’d been using for tire storage, and he wanted somebody to tell him honestly whether the slab could take it before he signed anything. That’s a smart order of operations, and it’s rarer than it should be. Most of the calls we field start with a price question and end with a concrete question, which is backwards. We’re based in Ames, we install across Iowa every week, and we’ve walked more shop floors than we can count. Here’s the safety-first walkthrough we did in Cedar Falls, in the same order we do it everywhere, followed by how financing terms and the payment schedule actually work when the money side comes up.

Step One: The Slab Tells You What You Can Buy

Before we talk columns, capacity, or color, we talk concrete. Every two-post lift on the market publishes a minimum slab spec, and for most 10,000 lb models that’s four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured a minimum of 28 days, with the anchors set a specified distance from any seam, edge, or expansion joint. In Cedar Falls the shop had a 1970s pour of unknown depth. We cored two test holes — a half-inch bit, ten minutes of work — and found five and a quarter inches of decent aggregate with no rebar in the way. That was a green light. We’ve cored other Iowa shops and found three and a half inches over sand, and in those bays the honest answer is that the slab gets cut out and repoured before anything gets bolted down.

People push back on this because it adds cost, and we understand that. But an anchor is only as good as what it’s biting into, and every catastrophic two-post failure we’ve been called to inspect traces back to either a bad slab or an anchor that was never torqued to spec. A concrete cut-and-pour for two column pads is not a huge job in the scheme of things. A car coming off the arms is. If you’re shopping a 2 post car lift and nobody has asked you about your concrete depth, age, or reinforcement, you’re talking to a box-mover and not an installer.

Step Two: Ceiling Height, Door Height, and Overhead vs. Baseplate

The Cedar Falls bay had a twelve-foot ceiling with a sprinkler main running crossways about eleven feet up, right where an overhead crossbar wanted to live. That happens constantly. Clearfloor overhead models put the equalization cables and the shutoff bar up top, which keeps the floor completely open for creepers, drip pans, and rolling jacks — great for a shop doing oil changes and fluid service all day. But they need real headroom, usually twelve feet minimum for a full-rise 10,000 lb unit, and more if you want to raise a full-size pickup all the way up.

Baseplate models route the cables through a low channel across the floor between the columns. You give up a little floor convenience and you drive over a ramp, but you can install under a ten- or eleven-foot ceiling and under obstructions. We’ve put baseplate units in more Iowa pole barns and older service buildings than overhead ones, purely because of what’s in the rafters. A caller from North Dakota last year had a 139-inch maximum height and knew immediately he was a baseplate candidate — that’s the right instinct. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not to the peak, and measure your overhead door opening too, because a lift that fits the ceiling but blocks the door is a different kind of problem.

Step Three: Capacity, Vehicle Mix, and Why 10,000 Isn’t Always Enough

The Cedar Falls shop’s heaviest regular customer vehicle was a three-quarter-ton diesel pickup at roughly 8,200 pounds. A 10,000 lb unit covers that on paper. But capacity ratings assume balanced loading across all four arms, and a shop that does alignments is constantly working with front-heavy setups, sometimes with a service bed or a plow mount still attached. We recommended 12,000 lb, and the price difference on a Rotary or Challenger between the two capacities is smaller than most people expect — usually a few hundred dollars on a purchase that will last twenty-five years.

The other capacity conversation is about arm configuration. Symmetric two-post arms are the same length front and rear, which centers the vehicle between the columns and works well for trucks and vans. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns and use shorter front arms so the vehicle sits back, giving you door clearance to actually get in and out of a car on the lift. For a tire and alignment shop cycling through sedans and crossovers all day, that door clearance matters more than the spec sheet suggests. Some units are versymmetric and handle both. Step Four: The Safety Systems You Should Physically Test

Every two-post lift ships with mechanical locks in each column, an equalization system that keeps the carriages level, arm restraints that stop the arms from swinging under load, and a single-point release. On installation day we test every one of them with the customer watching, because that’s the last time most people ever think about them until something goes wrong.

Here’s what we walked through in Cedar Falls. We raised the empty carriages to full height and let them down onto the locks so the owner could hear the pawls engage — a two-post lift should click audibly all the way up, and if it stops clicking on one side, stop and call somebody. We checked that both carriages reached the same lock position, which tells you the equalization cables are tensioned correctly. We rotated each arm to make sure the restraint gear engaged and wouldn’t back-drive. We torqued every anchor to the manufacturer’s spec with a calibrated wrench and wrote the value on the column so the next guy knows. Then we put a real vehicle on it, raised it to knee height, and shook it. Anybody selling you a 2 post car lift who skips that shake test is skipping the most informative thirty seconds of the entire install. We also left the owner with the ANSI/ALI operating manual and the daily inspection checklist, laminated and hung on the column.

Step Five: Oil Changes and Fluid Service on a 2 Post Car Lift

The Cedar Falls shop’s bread and butter is tires and alignments, but oil changes and fluid service are what keep the schedule full between appointments. A two-post is genuinely better than a four-post for that work because the wheels hang free and nothing blocks your access to the pan, the filter housing, or the transmission lines. You walk under, you have the whole underside, you’re done.

A few practical things that make fluid work faster. First, set your rise height for your tallest tech and stop lowering it back down between cars — you lose more time on cycle time than you think. Second, get a drain evacuation setup that rolls under a raised vehicle rather than a floor pan you have to slide; a 2 post car lift gives you the vertical room to use it. Third, pay attention to pad height. Drop-end arms and telescoping screw pads let you reach the frame rails on a lowered car without stacking three blocks, and that’s a safety issue as much as a convenience one — stacked adapters are the number one thing we see in shop photos that makes us wince. Fourth, keep a stiff brush and a rag on the lift and knock the road salt off the carriages every week. Iowa winters are brutal on anything with exposed steel and moving parts, and a five-minute habit adds years.

Financing Terms: How Shops Actually Pay for This

Very few independent shops write one check. The Cedar Falls owner didn’t either. Broadly, there are three ways this gets paid for, and each fits a different shop.

Straight purchase is cheapest over the life of the equipment. If you have the cash and the lift is going to outlive your lease, this is the right call — no interest, no paperwork, no lien. Equipment financing through a third-party lender is what most of our customers use. Terms typically run 24 to 60 months, rates move with the market, and approval on a lift-sized purchase is usually same-day or next-day with basic business documentation. The payment on a mid-capacity two-post over 48 months lands in a range that one extra oil change a week comfortably covers, which is the math we walk shop owners through. Section 179 depreciation is the third piece — a lift is qualifying equipment, and in most years a shop can expense the full purchase in the year it’s placed in service. Talk to your accountant, not to us, on that one, but be aware it exists because it changes the real cost meaningfully. On the payment schedule side, our own arrangement is straightforward: a deposit at order to lock freight and production, the balance due at delivery or at install completion depending on the job. We don’t do surprise change orders. If we core your slab and find a problem, you hear about it before anyone bolts anything down.

What Ongoing Ownership Actually Costs

Nobody budgets for year six. They should. A two-post lift is a hydraulic machine with steel cables, and both of those wear. Equalization cables stretch — that’s normal, not a defect — and they need periodic adjustment to keep the carriages level. Most manufacturers call for cable replacement somewhere in the eight-to-twelve-year window depending on cycles, and cables are one of the most common parts we ship out of our warehouse. Hydraulic fluid should be checked seasonally and changed on the interval in your manual. Power unit motors and pumps are serviceable and rebuildable; we stock components for essentially every major brand.

Then there’s annual inspection. ALI-certified inspectors go through the lift once a year, document the condition of the locks, cables, arms, anchors, and structure, and give you a tag. It’s not legally mandatory in every situation, but your insurance carrier may ask, and OSHA will absolutely ask after an incident. We’ve had a customer call us with a Challenger two-post where the motor ran, the fluid level was fine, and nothing was leaking — but the lift wouldn’t rise. That turned out to be a simple internal check-valve issue, a cheap part and an hour of labor, but it was found because he had a service relationship instead of a hope-it-keeps-working plan. Budget a modest annual figure for inspection and wear parts on your 2 post car lift and you’ll never face a surprise.
