Choosing a 2 post car lift gets complicated fast when the vehicles rolling into your bays range from a Honda Civic on winter tires to a dual-axle utility trailer loaded with a UTV. That was the situation at an RV and trailer service shop on the west side of West Des Moines that called us in early spring, right as their seasonal storage customers started pulling covers off toys they hadn’t touched since October. They had one four-post they used for storage, no real service lift, and a spec sheet spreadsheet with six model numbers on it that nobody could make sense of. We spent about forty minutes on the phone that first day, and we’ve been back three times since. Here’s what that first year actually looked like.

Why the model numbers on the spreadsheet didn’t line up
The list they emailed us had a mix of capacities, configurations and generations that no two manufacturers name the same way. There was a 10,000 lb clearfloor overhead model, a 12,000 lb baseplate, two asymmetric units and one that was actually a mid-rise scissor that had wandered into the spreadsheet by accident. Model numbers in this industry encode capacity, column style and sometimes arm geometry, but every brand uses a different shorthand. Rotary’s SPO series, Challenger’s CL and Versymmetric lines, BendPak’s XPR family — they all mean something specific, but you can’t compare them side by side by reading the digits alone.
We asked them to stop shopping model numbers and start writing down constraints instead. Ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, not at the peak. Concrete thickness and age. The heaviest vehicle they realistically expected on the arms, plus the longest wheelbase. Door width and where the compressor lines already ran. Once we had that, the six-model list collapsed to two real candidates. That’s almost always how it goes. Nobody needs to become an expert on every 2 post car lift on the market — they need to eliminate the ones that physically cannot work in their building, and then choose between what’s left based on service life and parts availability.
Ceiling height and the clearfloor versus baseplate decision
Their building had a nominal fourteen-foot ceiling, which sounds generous until you walk the bay with a tape measure. A steel purlin and two runs of conduit dropped the real usable height to about twelve foot four in the spot they wanted the lift. An overhead clearfloor unit with a 12,000 lb capacity would have cleared, barely, but the shutoff bar would have been uncomfortably close to the conduit. We’ve seen shops relocate electrical to make a lift fit, and that cost can rival the difference between two models.
Baseplate designs move the hydraulic lines and equalization cables down through a channel across the floor, which frees up all the vertical space you want but leaves a low bump between the columns. For a shop that rolls floor jacks, transmission jacks and drain pans across the bay constantly, that bump matters. For this shop, mostly walking parts in by hand, it didn’t. They went clearfloor in the end because a taller vehicle on the arms — think a Sprinter-based Class B motorhome chassis — clears better without an overhead beam. Capacity: the 10,000 lb trap and why they went bigger
Almost every buyer we talk to starts at 10,000 lb because that’s the volume tier and the price is friendly. For a shop working passenger cars and half-ton pickups, it’s genuinely the right answer. But capacity ratings are about total vehicle weight distributed across four pads, and a loaded three-quarter-ton with a service body, or a trailer tongue-heavy on the front arms, changes the math in a hurry.
We asked them to weigh their heaviest regular customer vehicle. It came in just under 9,400 lb wet. On a 10,000 lb unit that’s 94 percent of rating on a machine that will see that load weekly for a decade. We recommended stepping up to a 12,000 lb column. The price delta between tiers is real but it’s a smaller number than most people expect — usually a modest percentage of the total installed cost, not double. Over ten years of daily cycles, running a lift at 75 percent of rating instead of 95 percent shows up in cylinder seal life, cable stretch and how often you’re calling us. They bought the bigger unit and we’ve never had a load-related complaint out of that bay. Capacity is the one spec where buying past your current need almost always pays back.
Symmetric, asymmetric and the arm geometry question
The second real decision was arm configuration. A symmetric 2 post car lift centers the vehicle between the columns with equal-length arms — great for trucks and vans, but it means the doors open into the columns on a passenger car. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns and use unequal arms so the vehicle sits back, giving you door clearance to get in and out while the lift is raised.
Versymmetric-style designs from Challenger and the equivalent adjustable arm setups from other manufacturers let you run either way, which is the honest answer for a mixed-fleet shop. This West Des Moines shop was going to see a Civic on Monday and a tandem trailer on Thursday, so flexibility won. We set the columns to the asymmetric spread and showed their two techs how to reposition the arms for a long-wheelbase vehicle. The other spec nobody reads is minimum pad height. Drop-end arms with telescoping screw pads get under a lowered car or a low-clearance trailer frame in a way that standard arms simply won’t. If your customer base includes anything sitting low, check that number on the spec sheet before you sign anything — it’s the difference between using stack blocks every time and just driving on.
Concrete, anchors and what the install day actually involved
Their slab was poured in the early 2000s and they thought it was six inches. We core-tested and found five and a quarter with decent aggregate and no rebar we could find. That’s workable for most two-post installs, but it’s not something to guess at. Manufacturers publish minimum thickness and compressive strength for a reason, and anchor pullout is the failure mode nobody wants to experience. Where slabs come up thin, we cut and pour footings under each column — a half day of extra work and a modest cost that we’d rather do than walk away from.
Install itself took most of one day with two of us. Columns set and plumbed, anchors torqued to spec, hydraulic lines run, equalization cables routed and adjusted, power dropped by their electrician the week before. We cycled the lift empty a dozen times, then loaded it, checked lock engagement on every latch position, and adjusted arm restraints. Then we walked their techs through daily and monthly checks — cable tension, latch function, wear pad condition, fluid level. Seasonal storage work and the first six months of use
Spring in central Iowa means everybody remembers their camper at the same time. From April through June that bay ran hard: bearing repacks, brake service on trailer axles, underbody inspections on units that sat all winter on gravel, LP line checks, tank valve replacements. Working overhead on a trailer frame at chest height instead of on your back on a creeper changed their throughput more than they expected. One of their techs told us he stopped dreading axle work entirely.
Summer slowed down into general maintenance and the occasional storage-related surprise — a rodent-chewed brake line, a rusted-through exhaust hanger on a motorhome that had been parked eighteen months. By August they were talking about a second lift. That’s the pattern we see: shops underestimate how much work a 2 post car lift unlocks because they’ve been working around not having one. The first one changes the workflow, and then the bottleneck moves somewhere else. We told them to run this bay a full year before committing, partly so they’d know whether a second two-post or a scissor for quick tire work was the better spend.
The first service call and what year one taught us
Around month nine they called because the lift was drifting down slowly overnight. Motor ran fine, no puddle on the floor, fluid level normal. That’s a classic set of symptoms and it’s almost never the cylinder — it’s usually a check valve or the lowering valve seat holding a bit of debris. We pulled and cleaned the valve, flushed the reservoir, replaced the filter, and it’s held level ever since. Total visit: under two hours. If they’d let it go another season, contaminated fluid would have started scoring cylinder bores and the repair bill would have had a different shape entirely.
The other thing year one taught us is that the shops who do well with a 2 post car lift are the ones who write down the model and serial number somewhere they can find it. When you call us for a cable set, a latch kit or a cylinder seal, that number is what gets the right part on a truck the same week instead of after three rounds of photo exchanges. This shop taped a laminated card inside the power unit cover with the model, serial, install date and our number on it. Simple, and it has saved them a week of downtime at least twice.
