He runs lifted trucks and Jeeps in and out of his bay all week for tire rotation, wheel spacers, and suspension work, and he needed a lift that could handle tall rigs without a technician cracking a skull on an overhead beam. That single detail, ceiling clearance, ended up deciding the entire configuration of his install. Here’s how we walked through it, and what any Iowa shop considering a similar setup should know before choosing overhead or baseplate.

Why Ceiling Height Drives the Decision on a 2 Post Hydraulic Lift

Every overhead-style 2 post hydraulic lift needs a top beam connecting the columns, and that beam sits above the vehicle at full rise. In a shop with an 11 or 12-foot ceiling, running a lifted overlanding rig with a roof rack and light bar up to max height often means the vehicle top gets close to that beam, or the lift simply can’t reach full travel before something contacts overhead. We measured the Waukee bay at just under 13 feet to the lowest ceiling obstruction, including a sprinkler line the builder hadn’t accounted for.

That measurement mattered because his trucks average around 6.5 feet tall stock, and with roof racks and antennas that number climbs. Running the numbers against a standard overhead 2 post hydraulic lift, we determined he’d lose meaningful working height before reaching a comfortable position for underbody and wheel work. This is the exact calculation every Iowa shop should run before ordering: measure actual clearance, add your tallest vehicle’s height plus accessories, and compare against the lift’s rise spec. Skipping this step is the single most common reason installers get called back to reconfigure equipment that’s already bolted down.

Baseplate Configuration: What It Solved for This Shop

We ultimately specced a baseplate 2 post hydraulic lift for the Waukee bay. A baseplate design ties the two columns together with a heavy floor-level plate instead of an overhead beam, which eliminates the ceiling clearance problem entirely. The tradeoff is that a baseplate sits on the shop floor between the columns, so it can be a minor trip hazard and it slightly limits use of low-profile floor jacks directly under that section. For this builder, that tradeoff was nothing compared to the alternative of trimming lift height on every single vehicle. We also confirmed anchor bolt depth and floor thickness before drilling, since a baseplate model still needs a proper concrete slab — 4 inches minimum, ideally reinforced, to carry the rated capacity safely.

Tire Rotation and Wheel Work: Arm Reach and Drive-Thru Clearance

For a shop built around tire rotation, wheel work, and suspension service, arm reach and drive-thru width matter as much as height. We measured the truck’s wheelbase and confirmed the lift’s asymmetric arm configuration gave enough swing to clear the doors while positioning pads at the correct frame or pinch-weld points. Overlanding builds often run aftermarket rock sliders or skid plates that shift the ideal lift point away from factory locations, so we walked the builder through where his specific trucks needed pad placement.

We also confirmed drive-thru clearance between the columns was wide enough for his widest build, including a truck running 37-inch tires and extended fender flares. A 2 post hydraulic lift that’s too narrow between the columns turns every drive-in into a slow, careful process, and eventually someone clips a column. Getting the width right at the ordering stage saves that headache permanently.

Hydraulic System Basics That Matter for This Use Case

A 2 post hydraulic lift built for frequent tire and wheel work needs a hydraulic system that raises smoothly and holds steady while a technician torques lug nuts with an impact gun. We confirmed the unit’s power unit and cylinder sizing matched the shop’s actual average vehicle weight rather than just the max-rated capacity, since oversizing hydraulics for consistently lighter vehicles can mean less precise control at low lift heights, which matters when you’re setting a truck at wheel-height repeatedly through the day.

We also talked through fluid type and seasonal temperature swings, since a Waukee shop with an unheated bay in January sees hydraulic fluid behave differently than in July. Using the manufacturer-specified fluid viscosity, and not substituting whatever’s on the shelf, keeps seals lasting longer and keeps the lift responding predictably in cold starts.

Anchoring and Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Talk About

Every baseplate or overhead 2 post hydraulic lift is only as strong as the concrete it’s anchored into. Before this install, we cored a sample and confirmed slab thickness and cure age met the manufacturer’s minimum spec. Iowa shops built decades ago sometimes have thinner or older slabs that look fine but won’t hold anchor bolts to rated torque, and that’s not something you find out safely after a vehicle is already 6 feet in the air.

We also checked for rebar or wire mesh near the anchor points, which can interfere with proper bolt seating, and mapped out anchor spacing relative to expansion joints and slab edges, since anchors too close to a joint can crack under load. This groundwork took an extra hour on install day but it’s the difference between a lift that stays solid for fifteen years and one that starts working loose within a season.

Overhead vs Baseplate: A Decision Framework for Other Iowa Shops

The Waukee case isn’t universal — plenty of Iowa shops with taller ceilings and lower vehicles do just fine with an overhead 2 post hydraulic lift, which typically costs less and offers a slightly more rigid column-to-column connection for very heavy-duty use. If your shop mostly services sedans, minivans, and standard pickups under a 13-foot ceiling with several feet of clearance to spare, overhead is often the more economical, equally capable choice.

But if you’re running taller vehicles, working in an older building with lower ceilings, or you know your fleet will trend toward lifted trucks and larger SUVs over time, baseplate removes that ceiling variable permanently.
