Mobile mechanics live and die by turnaround time. When you’re doing tire rotations, brake jobs, or general wheel work at customer locations all week, the vehicles that come back to your own garage tend to be the harder jobs — the ones that need real access underneath, not just a jack and stands. A two post lift gets a vehicle up to chest height in under a minute, gives you full access to all four wheels at once, and frees up floor space compared to a jack and a set of stands scattered around the bay. For guys running a one or two-bay home garage as their base of operations, that space matters.

We’ve quoted several two post setups for exactly this kind of buyer — someone running a mobile rig most of the week and using a home garage for the heavier lifting, tire work, and inspections. The appeal isn’t just speed. It’s consistency. When you’re doing wheel work daily, a two post lift with good arm reach lets you position the vehicle once and rotate all the way around it without repositioning jack stands four separate times. That’s real minutes saved on every single car, and over a month those minutes add up to more billable jobs.

Ceiling Height: The First Number We Ask For

Before we talk model numbers or lifting capacity, we ask about ceiling height, because it decides what’s even possible in your space. Most residential garages run somewhere between 8 and 12 feet to the lowest overhead obstruction — and we say obstruction on purpose, because it’s rarely the ceiling itself. Garage door tracks, light fixtures, HVAC ductwork, and even garage door openers mounted to the ceiling can eat up a foot or more of usable height before you ever get to the actual ceiling.

On the Iowa install this case study is based on, the customer had a 12-foot ceiling, which is right in the sweet spot for a full-rise two post lift with an overhead beam. A vehicle raised to full height on a 9,000 to 10,000 lb capacity lift still needs clearance above it, and if you’re planning to work standing underneath with your hands up near the undercarriage, you want a few extra feet of margin beyond the vehicle’s raised height. If your garage is closer to 8 or 9 feet, you’re not necessarily out of luck — a baseplate lift without an overhead crossbar, or a lower-rise model, can still work, but your maximum lift height and the size of vehicle you can comfortably service both shrink. We always confirm this number with a tape measure before quoting, not a guess, because a few inches decides the whole project.

Door Swing and Approach Angle Nobody Thinks About Until Installation Day

Ceiling height gets all the attention, but door swing and approach angle cause just as many headaches on install day. If your garage door is a standard overhead sectional door, the columns of a two post lift need to sit far enough back from the door opening that the door track and springs don’t interfere with the arms when they’re swung out for loading a vehicle. We’ve walked into more than one garage where the customer measured ceiling height perfectly but didn’t account for the fact that the lift columns would sit almost directly under the last few feet of door track.

Approach angle matters just as much for a mobile mechanic who’s driving vehicles in and out multiple times a day. A two post lift installed too close to the front wall, or offset too far to one side, forces an awkward angled pull-in that’s fine once or twice but gets old fast when you’re doing it daily. Concrete Thickness and Anchoring for a Real Two Post Lift Home Garage Install

A two post lift only performs as well as the concrete it’s anchored into. Most manufacturers want a minimum of 4 inches of concrete for a home-duty two post lift, and closer to 5.5 to 6 inches for a 10,000 lb capacity commercial-grade unit rated for heavier daily use. Standard residential garage slabs are often right at that 4-inch minimum, which works fine for lighter-duty lifts but starts getting marginal once you move into higher capacities or daily mobile-mechanic use where the lift is cycling up and down constantly.

We test core samples or ask for slab documentation before we quote installation, because anchoring a two post lift into undersized or cracked concrete is the single most common cause of lift failure we see in the field — not the lift itself, the floor underneath it. If your slab is borderline, you have options: add a reinforced pad in the install area, choose a lower-capacity lift that has lighter anchoring requirements, or in some cases pour a new section of slab specifically for the lift footprint. For a mobile mechanic doing tire rotation and wheel work multiple times a day, the anchoring needs to hold up to real cycling, not just occasional weekend use, so we don’t cut corners here even if it adds a step to the project timeline.

Choosing Capacity for Tire Rotation and Wheel Work Specifically

Capacity gets oversold constantly in this industry, and mobile mechanics doing mostly tire rotation and wheel work don’t always need the biggest lift on the lot. If your heaviest vehicle is a half-ton truck or an SUV under 7,000 lbs, a 9,000 lb lift gives you real working margin without paying for capacity you’ll never use. We’ve quoted everything from 9,000 lb home-garage lifts up through 10,000 and 12,000 lb commercial units for customers who occasionally see heavier trucks or fleet vehicles come through.

What matters more than raw tonnage for wheel work is arm reach and pad placement. Tire and brake work means you need the arms to clear rocker panels and reach factory lift points without fighting the vehicle’s frame, and you’ll be swinging those arms in and out constantly throughout the day. A lift with adjustable, sliding arms and good reach at both the short and long end handles a wider mix of trucks and cars without needing extensions or workarounds. If you’re mostly doing lighter cars and light trucks, don’t oversize the lift just because it feels safer — match the capacity to the fleet mix you actually see and put the savings toward better arm kits or accessories instead.

Mobile Column Lifts as an Alternative Worth Considering

Not every mobile mechanic ends up buying a fixed two post lift, and it’s worth mentioning the alternative honestly. If your garage has ceiling height or floor thickness limitations, or if you want the flexibility to lift vehicles outdoors or in a rented space occasionally, mobile column lifts are worth a look. They don’t anchor to the floor at all, which sidesteps the concrete thickness question entirely, and they can lift a vehicle by the wheels rather than the frame, which some mobile techs prefer for certain wheel and suspension work.

The tradeoff is speed and footprint. Mobile columns take longer to set up per vehicle than walking a car onto a fixed two post lift and hitting a switch, and a set of four columns costs more up front than a comparable single fixed lift. For a mobile mechanic doing high volume tire rotation and wheel work at one home base, we usually still recommend a fixed two post setup because the daily time savings outweigh the flexibility mobile columns offer. But if your situation involves working at multiple locations or a garage that can’t support permanent anchoring, it’s a real option we’ll walk you through.
