A 2 post lift home garage installation for restoration work is a different animal than one going in for basic oil changes, and we tell every central Iowa customer that up front. When you’re pulling engines, cutting out rusted quarter panels, or hanging a body off the lift for hours at a time while you weld in new floor pans, the equipment is being asked to hold weight in ways the manufacturer’s basic duty cycle didn’t necessarily picture. Why Restoration Work Changes the Slab Requirement

Most lift manufacturers publish a minimum concrete thickness of 4 inches for a standard-duty two-post lift under normal passenger vehicle use. But restoration work isn’t normal use. When a body is hanging on the lift with the engine, transmission, and interior stripped out, the weight distribution shifts, and when you’re using the lift for hours instead of minutes at a time, the anchors are under sustained load rather than brief spikes. We routinely recommend 4.5 to 6 inches of properly cured concrete for a 2 post lift home garage setup that’s going to see heavy restoration or metal fabrication work, and we always ask about the age of the slab before we quote anything.

New concrete needs to cure for at least 28 days before it reaches full strength, and anchoring into green concrete is one of the most common mistakes we see in home garages. We’ve walked into installs where a slab was poured six days earlier because the homeowner wanted the lift in before winter, and we’ve had to delay the anchor bolts until the concrete caught up. For a garage that’s going to double as a fabrication bay, we’d rather push the install back two weeks than set anchors into concrete that hasn’t cured, because the anchor pull-out rating is only as good as the slab holding it.

Rebar, Wire Mesh, and What’s Actually Under the Slab

Rebar and wire mesh reinforce concrete against cracking and settling, but they don’t automatically make a slab strong enough for lift anchors, and that surprises a lot of restoration hobbyists. What matters for a 2 post lift home garage anchor point is compressive strength and thickness, not whether there’s mesh a couple inches down. If your anchor bolt happens to hit a rebar strand while drilling, you move the hole slightly rather than forcing it through, and a competent installer knows how to read the resistance in the hammer drill to tell the difference between rebar and aggregate.

For central Iowa garages built in the last fifteen to twenty years, we typically find 4-inch slabs with light wire mesh, which is adequate for a standard-duty lift but tight for heavier restoration-focused equipment rated 10,000 lbs and up. If you’re unsure what you’re working with, core sample testing or simply asking your builder for the original spec sheet saves a lot of guessing. We’d rather find out before delivery day that your slab needs a supplemental pad poured under the lift footprint than discover it when the anchors won’t torque to spec.

Choosing Lift Capacity for Metal Work and Body Removal

Restoration work often means the vehicle’s weight distribution is nothing like a stock car on the showroom floor. Stripped bodies, partial frames, and vehicles with engines pulled all shift the center of gravity in ways a standard capacity chart doesn’t fully account for. We generally push restoration customers toward a 10,000 lb or 12,000 lb rated two-post rather than the 9,000 lb models that are common in basic home garage installs, simply because the margin matters more when you’re doing unconventional lifting.

Arm length and reach also matter more for restoration work than for routine maintenance. If you’re regularly lifting older trucks, vans, or vehicles with unusual frame contact points, you want a two-post with generous arm reach and multiple pad height adjustments so you’re not fighting the lift to find safe contact points on a stripped chassis. This is a conversation worth having before you buy rather than after, because retrofitting a lift for capacity you didn’t plan for usually means buying a second lift.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance for Bodywork

A lot of restoration and metal work involves standing on the lift platform, using overhead lighting rigs, or running hoists to pull engines straight up and out. That means ceiling height matters more here than in a typical 2 post lift home garage install meant for oil changes and brake jobs. We generally want at least 12 feet of clearance for a two-post lift with a vehicle raised to full height, and closer to 14 feet if you’re planning to run an engine hoist or overhead crane system in the same bay.

Garage door height and header clearance matter too, especially if you’re bringing in project vehicles that are taller than average trucks or vans, or if you’re planning to build a rotisserie setup that needs its own overhead space. We ask about ceiling height on every quote precisely because a lift that’s too tall for the space either can’t reach full extension or ends up with the overhead beam clipping light fixtures and garage door tracks, and neither of those is something you want to discover after delivery.

Anchoring Standards We Won’t Compromise On

Every two-post lift ships with a specific anchor bolt size, embedment depth, and torque specification from the manufacturer, and those numbers exist because the entire safety case for the lift depends on the anchors doing their job. We’ve seen installers elsewhere use whatever anchor was in the truck rather than the one specified for that model, and that’s a shortcut we won’t take on any 2 post lift home garage job, restoration-focused or not.

We test every anchor to its rated torque before we call the job finished, and if a hole comes up soft because of rebar interference or aggregate voids, we move it and redrill rather than accepting a weak anchor point. For restoration shops where the lift might be loaded for extended periods with a body hanging and no wheels on the ground, this isn’t a box to check — it’s the difference between a lift that holds and one that doesn’t. We’d rather spend an extra hour on anchor testing than have that conversation after something goes wrong.

Space Planning for a Fabrication-Ready Bay

Restoration and metal work need more clearance around the lift than routine service does. You’re running welders, cutting tools, grinders, and often a rolling toolbox or parts cart that needs to circulate around the vehicle while it’s raised. We tell customers to plan for at least 12 feet of width for the lift bay itself, plus enough side clearance to open both doors of the vehicle fully and still walk around comfortably with tools in hand.

If you’re using the same bay for welding, ventilation and fire safety come into the space plan too — a two-post lift doesn’t change your fire code obligations, but it does change how you route extension cords, gas lines, and dust collection around a raised vehicle. We’ve helped central Iowa customers reconfigure garage layouts around a new lift so the welding station, parts storage, and lift bay don’t compete for the same six feet of floor space, and that planning conversation is worth having before the concrete work even starts.

What a Professional Install Adds for Restoration Shops

DIY installation is common for basic two-post lifts in home garages, but we push harder for professional installation when the use case is restoration or metal work, because the margin for error is smaller. A misaligned column, an under-torqued anchor, or arm restraints that aren’t engaged properly matter on every lift, but they matter more when the vehicle on the lift might be missing its engine, its interior, or half its sheet metal and behaving unpredictably as weight shifts during work.
