A 2 post lift home garage setup is one of the most common calls we get from independent shop owners across the Iowa-Illinois corridor who are tired of doing wheel bearing service on jack stands. Wheel bearings mean the wheel has to hang free, the suspension has to droop, and you need clean access to the hub without a floor jack fighting you the whole time. We’ve installed enough of these in small bays to know there isn’t one right answer — there are two workable configurations, and which one fits depends on your ceiling, your slab, and how you actually move cars through the shop.

Configuration One: Overhead Symmetric in a Standard 10-12 Foot Bay

The first configuration we see most often is a symmetric overhead 2 post lift dropped into a bay that’s roughly 10 to 12 feet tall, with a slab somewhere around 4 inches of standard concrete. This is the classic setup we quote for guys running a one- or two-bay operation who mainly need to pull wheels, drop control arms, and swap bearings on daily-driver sedans and light trucks. Symmetric arms center the vehicle between the columns, which is exactly what you want for bearing work because the weight distributes evenly and you’re not fighting an off-balance load while you’re torquing a hub nut.

The tradeoff with this configuration is overhead clearance. An overhead-style 2 post lift home garage install needs enough ceiling height for the crossbar, and in a lot of older Iowa-Illinois corridor buildings with 10 to 11 foot ceilings, that crossbar is going to be a factor when you’re loading taller trucks or vans. If your bay runs closer to 12 feet, you’ve got room to breathe, and this is the setup we push hardest because it’s the most cost-effective way to get a full-rise 2 post lift into a working bay without touching a baseplate-only unit that limits your rise height on taller vehicles.

Configuration Two: Baseplate Lift for Lower Ceilings and Rod-In Anchoring

The second configuration is a baseplate 2 post lift, which we spec whenever ceiling height is tight or when a shop owner is worried about anchoring into questionable concrete. Baseplate lifts don’t have an overhead crossbar tying the columns together, so they work in bays with 9 to 10 feet of clearance where an overhead unit would clip a lift arm on the ceiling. We’ve rodded these in 6 to 8 inches deep on slabs that were only 4 inches thick at the surface, which matters because a lot of older shop floors in this corridor were poured for parking, not for a lift rated to hoist 9,000 to 12,000 pounds.

The catch with baseplate lifts is floor space. Because the columns aren’t connected overhead, you generally need a slightly wider stance and more clear floor around the columns to keep the geometry stable, which eats into a bay that’s already tight. For a shop doing high-volume bearing work where speed matters, we usually still recommend the overhead configuration if the ceiling allows it, and we reserve baseplate for bays where the ceiling truly won’t work any other way.

Why Wheel Bearing Work Specifically Changes the Calculation

Bearing service isn’t like an oil change where you’re in and out in fifteen minutes. You’re pulling calipers, rotors, sometimes the whole hub assembly, and you need the wheel to hang free without the suspension binding. That means your 2 post lift home garage setup needs enough rise to get the tire well clear of the ground and enough arm reach to get under the pinch welds without the arms interfering with your air tools. We’ve watched shops try to save money on a shorter-rise lift and then regret it every time they’re wrestling a hub off a lifted truck.

It also changes how you think about lift capacity. A shop doing bearing work on half-ton trucks and SUVs in the Iowa-Illinois corridor needs at least a 9,000 to 10,000 pound rated lift, and honestly we spec 12,000 pounds more often than not because trucks keep getting heavier and the lift needs to last through vehicles you haven’t seen yet. Buying under capacity to save money up front is the single most common regret we hear from shop owners two or three years in.

Slab Condition Determines More Than People Expect

Before we ever talk configuration, we ask about the concrete, because a 2 post lift home garage install lives or dies on what’s under it. Standard 4-inch slabs can work for lighter-duty lifts, but anything in the 9,000 to 12,000 pound range with real daily use wants a slab closer to 4.5 to 6 inches with proper rebar or mesh reinforcement. We’ve had to turn down installs — or push customers toward a baseplate configuration with a deeper anchor pattern — because the existing floor simply wasn’t going to hold a symmetric overhead lift long-term.

If you’re building out a new bay from scratch, this is the cheapest problem to solve, because pouring it right the first time costs a fraction of cutting and re-pouring later. If you’re retrofitting into an existing shop, we send someone out to core-check the slab before you spend money on equipment, because guessing at concrete thickness is how lifts end up with cracked anchors two years down the road.

Sequencing the Build-Out So the Lift Isn’t an Afterthought

One thing independent shop owners consistently underestimate is sequencing. If you’re finishing out a new bay, the 2 post lift home garage placement should be decided before you run electrical, before you finalize lighting, and definitely before you pour or seal the floor. Columns need clearance from walls and adjacent bays, air lines and power drops need to land where your tool cart will actually be standing, and lighting needs to be positioned so you’re not working in your own shadow under a lifted vehicle.

We’ve walked into shops where the lift got installed last, after everything else was finished, and the result was a compressor line running across the floor at an awkward angle or a light fixture positioned directly behind a column where it does no good. Planning the lift’s footprint first, even on paper, saves you from redoing work that’s already been paid for.

Comparing Total Cost Between the Two Configurations

When shop owners ask us to compare the two configurations dollar for dollar, the overhead symmetric lift is usually the more economical choice per pound of capacity, assuming the ceiling height cooperates. Baseplate lifts tend to run a bit higher for equivalent capacity because of the reinforced column design needed to replace the structural role of the overhead crossbar. But that difference gets erased fast if you have to modify a low ceiling or reinforce a slab to make the overhead option work — at that point baseplate becomes the cheaper path once you account for the construction work you’d otherwise need.

We always run this comparison specific to your building rather than giving a blanket answer, because we’ve seen bays where baseplate was clearly cheaper and others where overhead won easily. The only wrong move is picking a configuration based on sticker price alone without factoring in what your ceiling and floor can actually support.

What We Ask Before Quoting Any Bay in This Corridor

Every quote we send for a 2 post lift home garage or shop install starts with the same handful of questions: ceiling height, slab thickness and age, bay width and depth, and the heaviest vehicle you realistically expect to lift. Shop owners across the Iowa-Illinois corridor are often surprised how much those four numbers narrow down the decision before we ever talk brand or price. A shop with a 12-foot ceiling, 5-inch slab, and a fleet of half-ton trucks is a completely different quote than a shop with a 10-foot ceiling working mostly on sedans.
