A 2 post parking lift is only as good as the bay you put it in, and we learn that lesson every time we walk into a third-generation family garage that’s been squeezing cars into the same footprint since the 1970s. We recently worked with a shop like that in Ankeny that does a lot of exhaust and driveline work — the kind of job where you need to get a tech and a transmission jack underneath a vehicle without bumping into a column every five minutes. If you’re planning a bay around a two post lift, the layout decisions you make before the concrete anchors go in will determine whether that bay is a pleasure to work in or a daily headache.

Why Layout Matters More for Driveline and Exhaust Bays

Most people think of a 2 post parking lift as a way to fit two cars where one used to go, and that’s true. But when the bay is also a working exhaust and driveline bay, the layout has to account for a technician standing under the vehicle, a floor jack or transmission jack rolling in from the side, and enough vertical clearance to work comfortably at chest height rather than hunching. We see shops make the mistake of centering the lift in the bay for symmetry instead of centering it for workflow — leaving the tool cart and work bench on the wrong side and forcing techs to walk around the columns every trip.

The other piece people underestimate is drive-thru clearance. Exhaust work often means backing a vehicle in, and if the columns are set too tight to the drive path, mirrors and quarter panels take the hit. We always ask about the vehicle mix before recommending column spacing — a bay that mostly sees pickups and vans needs a wider drive-thru configuration than one that’s mostly sedans and light trucks. Getting this right up front saves the shop from re-anchoring a lift six months later because nobody can get a jack under the differential without hitting a post.

Real Dimensions: Column Spacing and Overhead Clearance

For a typical asymmetric 2 post parking lift rated 9,000 to 10,000 lb, column spacing usually runs somewhere between 9 and 12 feet depending on the model, with the front column offset to open up the door-swing area. Overhead units need roughly 12 to 13 feet of ceiling height for full rise, while baseplate or low-overhead designs can work in bays with 10 to 11 feet of clearance — a real consideration for older buildings with lower trusses, which we see constantly in Ankeny’s older commercial strips.

Width-wise, we tell shops to plan for at least 12 feet of clear bay width per lift, and closer to 14 feet if techs will be rolling equipment alongside the vehicle while it’s up. Depth matters just as much: a driveline bay needs enough runway behind the lift for a technician to pull a transmission straight back without hitting a wall or a neighboring lift’s columns. If you’re running two lifts side by side for a family-shop layout, we generally recommend at least 3 feet of clear space between the outer arms of each unit at full swing, more if you’re running impact tools or transmission jacks in that gap regularly.

Arm Reach and Swing for Underbody Work

Exhaust and driveline work lives and dies on arm reach. A 2 post parking lift with short arms might lift the vehicle fine but leave the tech straining to reach the catalytic converter or the center support bearing because the arm can’t tuck in far enough under the frame rails. We generally spec asymmetric arms with a good short-arm reach in the 20 to 24 inch range and a long-arm reach past 40 inches, which covers everything from compact cars to full-size trucks without swapping pads constantly.

Arm swing radius also affects bay layout more than people expect. A lift with a wide swing arc needs extra clearance on both sides to fully retract the arms for vehicle entry and exit, and if the bay is tight, techs end up fighting the arms every time they pull a car in. We spec drop-end arms for shops doing a lot of exhaust work specifically because the lower pad height gets contact points closer to the rocker without forcing the lift up higher than needed, which keeps the whole bay more comfortable to work under for hours at a time.

Anchoring and Floor Prep for a Working Bay

A parking-focused two post lift still needs proper anchoring, and that’s doubly true when the bay doubles as an active repair bay with jacks and carts rolling around it daily. We always pull a core sample or review floor drawings before quoting anchor bolt length, because a 2 post parking lift bolted into a thin or cracked slab is a liability no matter how good the lift itself is. Iowa freeze-thaw cycles are hard on older concrete, and we’ve walked into more than one Ankeny shop with hairline cracks radiating from old anchor points that never got addressed.

For driveline bays specifically, we also look at drainage and floor coatings, since oil and transmission fluid spills are a given. A properly sloped floor with a durable epoxy coating keeps the lift’s base plates from sitting in standing fluid, which extends the life of the anchors and the lift structure both. If the shop is pouring new concrete for the bay, we recommend a minimum 4-inch slab with proper rebar for lift installation, thicker if the shop plans to run heavier trucks through that bay down the road.

Positioning for Two-Tech Workflow

Family shops running three generations of technicians often have two people working a vehicle at once — one under the car, one at the engine bay or wheel well. Layout has to account for that. We position the 2 post parking lift so the control panel and power unit sit on the side with the most open floor space, letting one tech run the lift while the other stages tools without crossing paths constantly.

We also think about where the vehicle’s doors will open relative to the lift arms and neighboring equipment. Asymmetric lifts are designed so the front columns sit further back, opening up the door area for the driver to exit comfortably once the vehicle’s up — but if the bay layout puts a tool chest right where that door needs to swing, the whole advantage is lost. Walking through the actual sequence of a driveline job, from vehicle entry to jack placement to parts removal, before finalizing where the lift sits saves a lot of retrofitting later.

Fitting a Parking Lift Into a Multi-Bay Shop

When a shop uses the 2 post parking lift for overflow vehicle storage as well as active repair work, layout gets more complex because you’re balancing daily workflow against occasional parking density. We’ve helped shops in the Ankeny area design bays where the lift’s higher parking position, once raised, sits clear of a second vehicle parked nose-in underneath — effectively doubling the storage in that footprint without shrinking the working envelope needed for exhaust and driveline jobs during the day.

That kind of dual-use layout only works if the lift’s overhead clearance and the building’s ceiling height leave enough gap above the parked vehicle for the lift’s rise limit. We measure the tallest vehicle the shop expects to store, add clearance for mirrors and roof racks, and check that against both the lift’s maximum height and the building’s structure before recommending a dual-purpose configuration. Skipping that step is how shops end up with a lift that technically parks a second car but can never actually use that capability safely.

What We’d Tell Any Shop Planning a New Bay

If you’re weighing a 2 post parking lift for a bay that also handles exhaust and driveline work, our advice is to design around the job, not just the vehicle count. Walk the actual repair sequence, measure your real ceiling height rather than trusting old blueprints, and get the column spacing dialed to your actual vehicle mix rather than a generic spec sheet number. A lift that fits the building but not the workflow ends up half as useful as one sized correctly from day one.
