Myth 1: Any 220v outlet in your shop will work fine

Myth 2: 110v and 220v power units perform the same

We get this question on nearly every quote call. Most lift manufacturers offer both a 110v and a 220v car lift hydraulic power unit option, and shops assume the choice is just about which outlet is easier to install. It isn’t. The 220v version draws less amperage for the same horsepower, runs cooler under repeated cycling, and generally lifts a touch faster since the motor isn’t laboring as hard on the lower voltage. For a shop doing occasional oil changes, 110v is often fine. For a specialty shop running driveline and exhaust jobs back to back all day, that faster, cooler cycle adds up over a full shift.
