Instead of answering that with a single recommendation, we’ve found it’s more useful to walk through it as a decision tree — a series of yes-or-no questions about budget, slab thickness, and bay configuration that narrows the field fast. Step One: What’s Your Real Budget Ceiling?

Every decision tree for a 4 car lift starts here, because budget eliminates whole categories before you even get to specs. If you’re working with a tight number and just need storage plus occasional exhaust access, a basic mechanical 4-post without alignment options or a full open-center deck is going to be the cheapest path in. We’ve quoted shops that specifically said they didn’t want to spend into five figures for a lift, and for those jobs an Atlas or entry Rotary mechanical model without extra options usually lands closer to their number.

If your budget has more room because you’re running exhaust work, driveline swaps, and undercar fabrication regularly, that changes the math. You’re not just buying a place to park a car — you’re buying a work platform, and that means paying for an open-center or slotted deck design so a technician can actually get underneath with a transmission jack or exhaust cart. Restoration shops tend to underestimate this cost difference upfront and then regret the base model once they’re trying to drop a driveshaft with the deck in the way. Knowing which category you’re in before you call us saves a lot of back-and-forth on quotes that don’t fit.

Step Two: What Does Your Slab Actually Look Like?

Once budget narrows the field, slab thickness and reinforcement decide what’s physically possible. A 4 car lift transmits real point loads through its anchor bolts, and a thin or poorly reinforced slab can’t be trusted with a heavier rated model no matter how good the deal looks. We generally want to see 4 inches of concrete as an absolute minimum for lighter mechanical 4-posts, and closer to 5 to 6 inches with proper rebar for anything approaching 9,000 pounds or heavier duty-cycle use.

If your restoration shop has an older slab, or you’re not sure what’s under the surface, this is worth checking before you fall in love with a specific model. Slabs poured decades ago for lighter shop use sometimes don’t have the rebar density modern lift anchoring wants to see. We’ve had Quad Cities customers core-drill test spots or pull old pour records just to confirm what they’re working with. It’s a cheap step compared to installing a heavier 4 car lift on a slab that can’t support it long-term and dealing with cracked concrete around the anchors a year later.

Step Three: Rebar and Reinforcement Details That Change the Answer

Rebar placement and slab age matter almost as much as raw thickness. A 4-inch slab with tight rebar spacing and proper curing can sometimes outperform a 5-inch slab poured without reinforcement at all, so thickness alone isn’t the full picture. If you’re pouring new concrete specifically for a restoration bay and know a 4 car lift is going in, this is the moment to get it right — tell your concrete contractor the anchor pattern and point loads ahead of the pour, not after.

For shops working with existing infloor heat or older infrastructure, rebar and heat lines can conflict with anchor placement, and that’s a conversation worth having before delivery day. We’ve seen infloor heat systems complicate anchor spacing enough that a lift has to shift a foot or two from where the shop owner originally wanted it. None of this is a dealbreaker, but it belongs earlier in the decision tree than most people put it — right alongside budget, not as an afterthought once the lift is already on order.

Step Four: Open-Center vs. Standard Deck for Driveline Work

This is where use case takes over from structural questions. If your restoration work regularly involves exhaust systems, driveshafts, or transmission access, a standard solid-deck 4-post is going to fight you every time you need to get underneath. An open-center or slotted-deck configuration leaves a gap down the middle of the platform so a rolling jack or transmission stand can work directly beneath the vehicle without pulling it back off the lift.

If your shop’s work is closer to pure storage — cars parked for months at a time with only occasional light service — a solid deck is fine and often cheaper. The decision tree really splits hard here: driveline and exhaust-heavy shops should default toward open-center, and storage-first shops can save money on a standard deck. We ask this question early in every quote conversation because it affects not just price but which brands even offer the configuration you need.

Step Five: Ceiling Height and Bay Width Constraints

Even after budget, slab, and deck style are settled, physical clearance can still override your preferred answer. Restoration shop bays vary a lot — some Quad Cities buildings have generous 14 to 16-foot ceilings, others are working with older construction closer to 11 or 12 feet. A taller 4 car lift with a car parked on top for storage needs real headroom, and driveline work underneath a raised vehicle needs its own clearance too.

Bay width matters just as much, especially if you’re running two vehicles side by side or storing one on top while working underneath another. We measure door width, support columns, and any overhead obstructions like ductwork or sprinkler lines before finalizing a configuration. It’s common for a shop to want the tallest, widest platform available only to find a support column sitting exactly where a post needs to go — better to catch that on paper than during installation.

Step Six: Delivery-Only vs. Full Installation

The last branch in the tree is logistics, not equipment. Some restoration shop owners are comfortable installing a 4 car lift themselves or have crew who’ve done it before, and just want delivery to the door. Others want us on site start to finish — unloading, anchoring, alignment, and a walkthrough on operation and maintenance. Neither choice is wrong, but it does affect total cost and timeline.

If your shop has done 4-post installations before on other equipment, delivery-only can save real money.
