If you run an EV specialty shop and you’re shopping for a 4 car lift to handle brake service and rotor swaps, you’ve probably already run into the overhead vs baseplate debate — and probably already heard some bad advice about it. We install lifts across central Iowa every week, and the overhead-vs-baseplate question is one of the most misunderstood parts of the whole buying decision. Both configurations can absolutely do brake work well. The real question is what your ceiling height, your bay layout, and your EV-specific weight and battery-pack clearance needs actually require — not which one sounds more “professional.”

Myth 1: Overhead Lifts Are Always Better for Brake Work

The myth goes like this: overhead lifts are the “real” commercial choice, and baseplate lifts are a step down. That’s not accurate. Overhead configurations route the crossbar and cable routing above the vehicle instead of across the floor, which is genuinely useful in a shop doing a high volume of brake jobs where techs are constantly walking under and around the car. It keeps the floor clear and reduces tripping hazards during busy rotor-swap days.

But overhead lifts need ceiling height — typically 13.5 to 15 feet depending on the model — and if your building doesn’t have it, you’re not getting the overhead version no matter how much you want it. For an EV shop specifically, we also point out that overhead units sometimes need to be positioned with extra clearance for taller EV SUVs and trucks with elevated battery packs. A 4 car lift setup mixing two overhead bays for general service and two baseplate bays for brake-specific stalls is a layout we build often, and it lets a shop get the benefits of both without over-committing to one configuration.

Myth 2: Baseplate Lifts Can’t Handle Heavier EVs

This one costs shops money. Baseplate 2 post lifts, when properly rated and properly anchored, handle EV curb weights just fine — many EV sedans and crossovers run 4,500 to 6,500 lbs, well within a quality 9,000 or 10,000 lb baseplate unit’s capacity. The baseplate design actually gives you a lower, more visible reference point for arm and adapter placement, which some techs prefer for brake work because it’s easier to see pad contact and lift point clearance without craning your neck upward.

The real limiting factor with baseplate lifts isn’t weight capacity — it’s floor thickness and anchoring. EVs are heavy, and a baseplate lift asks your slab to carry that load through the anchor bolts at four points on the floor rather than through overhead structure. If your concrete is thin or older, that’s the conversation we have before we recommend baseplate over overhead, not weight rating.

Sizing a 4 Car Lift Bay for Brake and Rotor Work Specifically

Brake service doesn’t need the same lift height range as engine or transmission work, but it does need good sightlines and easy caliper access. When we spec a 4 car lift installation for a shop doing primarily brake and rotor swaps, we usually recommend arms with a wide range of adjustment and a lift height that gets techs a comfortable working position without excessive travel time on every cycle. Symmetric or slightly asymmetric arm configurations both work for brakes — this isn’t a decision that hinges heavily on that detail the way alignment work does.

What does matter is stall width. EVs and larger crossovers need generous door swing and workspace, and a 4 car lift layout crammed into too tight a footprint creates bottlenecks during high-volume days. We’ve walked into shops where the lifts were rated fine but the bay spacing made a two-tech brake job feel like a traffic jam. Plan your floor layout around the widest vehicle you regularly service, not the average one.

The Ceiling Height Conversation We Have With Every EV Shop

Ceiling height decides more of this decision than any other single factor, and it’s the first thing we ask about on every quote call. Overhead lifts generally need more vertical clearance for the crossbar and cable system to sit above a raised vehicle without interference. If your building has 12-foot walls or lower, baseplate is often simply the right answer, myth-busting aside.

We measure to the lowest obstruction in the bay, not just the wall height — that means HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, and lighting fixtures all count. More than one Iowa shop owner has been surprised to learn their “14 foot ceiling” only leaves 12.5 feet of usable clearance once you account for the ductwork running down the middle of the bay. We do that measurement before we ever recommend a configuration, because guessing wrong on ceiling clearance is an expensive mistake to correct after installation.

Anchoring and Concrete Requirements for Baseplate Configurations

Baseplate lifts transfer load through anchor bolts into the slab, so concrete thickness and condition matter enormously. Most manufacturers spec a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete for a baseplate 2 post lift, and heavier-rated units or older/cracked slabs may need more. This is one of the most common reasons a brake service shop ends up choosing overhead instead of baseplate — not because overhead is superior, but because the existing floor can’t support baseplate anchoring without a new pour.

We test core samples or at minimum review slab age and thickness before recommending a baseplate 4 car lift setup for any EV shop. If your building has infloor heat or rebar mesh, that changes the anchoring approach too, and it’s worth flagging on your very first call with us rather than discovering it during installation day when the crew is standing there with a hammer drill.

Cable Routing, Maintenance, and Long-Term Serviceability

Overhead lifts route their equalizer cable through the overhead crossbar, which keeps it out of the way of foot traffic but also makes it slightly less convenient to inspect during routine maintenance — you’re working above your head rather than at floor level. Baseplate lifts route cables along the floor or through the base, which some techs find easier to inspect and service but which also puts the cable path in a spot where dropped tools or rolling equipment can occasionally cause wear.

  • Neither routing style is inherently more failure-prone when properly maintained, but we do recommend a documented monthly cable inspection regardless of configuration. If you’re running a busy brake bay with a 4 car lift setup handling multiple daily cycles, that inspection schedule should be tighter, not looser, because cycle count drives wear more than calendar time.     Making the Final Call for Your Shop

    There’s no universally correct answer between overhead and baseplate for brake and rotor work — the correct answer is the one that matches your ceiling height, your slab condition, and how your bays are laid out relative to vehicle traffic flow. What we tell every EV shop owner is to stop asking which configuration is “better” and start asking which configuration your building actually supports well, because that question has a real answer and the other one doesn’t.
