Configuration One: Parallel Runways for High-Volume Diff Service

The first layout we see in busy independent shops is two or three 4-post lifts set up in parallel runways, drive-through style, each unit spaced far enough apart that a tech can walk a full loop around the vehicle without ducking under another bay’s crossbeam. For differential service specifically, this matters because you’re often pulling a cover plate, catching fluid, and then working a pump or funnel back in — that’s a two-handed job that benefits from open space on both sides of the vehicle. The tradeoff with parallel runways is floor space. Shops with a 30×60 or larger bay area do well here. If your building is narrower, parallel runways can feel cramped, and techs end up backing vehicles in at odd angles just to clear support columns. We always walk the physical space with a tape measure before recommending this setup, because a drawing on paper rarely captures how a shop actually moves once it’s full of vehicles and people.

Configuration Two: Storage-Forward Layout with One Working Bay

The second configuration is what we’d call storage-forward: one 4 car lift dedicated purely to service work, positioned near your fluid disposal and tool cart, with a second or third unit further back used mainly to store or stage vehicles waiting on parts. This is common in shops that do a mix of fleet work and walk-in repairs, where cars sit for a day or two before the diff service actually happens. The working bay gets the good lighting, the air lines, and the floor drain access. The storage bays don’t need any of that.

This layout is more forgiving of tight buildings because the storage lifts can be pushed closer to walls — you’re not maneuvering around them daily, just loading and unloading occasionally. The downside is throughput. If you’ve got three vehicles needing diff service on the same day, only one bay is truly optimized for the job, and you’ll be shuffling vehicles between storage position and the working bay more than you’d like. We generally recommend this setup to shops doing lower volume, higher complexity work rather than shops trying to turn multiple diff services per day.

Runway Length and Vehicle Mix

Most independent shops don’t just service one type of vehicle, and that changes how you should size a 4 car lift for the bay. If you’re seeing everything from compact cars to 3/4-ton trucks, you want a runway long enough to comfortably fit the longest wheelbase in your regular customer mix, with extra room to position the vehicle for even weight distribution on all four posts. Shortchanging runway length to save floor space is one of the more common mistakes we see — it works fine until a longer truck rolls in and the tech has to get creative with positioning, which isn’t something you want to be doing during a fluid job with a drain pan underneath.

We also factor in whether the shop plans to add a rolling jack bridge, since differential service sometimes benefits from being able to lift the axle independently once the vehicle is up on the main lift. Not every 4-post model accommodates a jack bridge attachment well, so this is worth confirming before you commit to a specific unit.

Concrete and Anchoring for a Cedar Falls Shop

None of this shows up on a spec sheet, but it’s what determines whether your team actually enjoys working in the bay you built.

We also recommend keeping a dedicated fluid cart near whichever bay handles the bulk of diff work, rather than a shared cart that has to be wheeled across the shop floor. It sounds minor until you’ve done six diff services in a day and realize how much walking that cart eliminates.

Choosing Between the Two Layouts for Your Shop
