A lot of rural shop owners in eastern Nebraska call us after the concrete is already poured, and that’s exactly backwards when you’re planning a 4 car lift for exhaust and driveline access. Sequencing matters. If you buy the lift first, or pour the slab first, or frame the building without talking to an installer, you end up retrofitting around decisions that should have been made together. We’ve walked plenty of farm shop owners back through a buildout that got sequenced wrong, and it’s almost always fixable — but it costs more time and money than doing it right the first pass. This checklist is the order we actually recommend, based on what we see go wrong most often.

Step 1: Decide Weight Rating and Use Case Before Anything Else

Before you talk concrete or ceiling height, decide what you’re actually lifting and how you’re using it. Farm shop owners often ask for a quote on a 4 car lift for car storage or light service, but then mention they also want to pull an exhaust system or drop a driveline on the same equipment — those are different jobs with different arm and runway configurations. A basic storage-oriented 4 post lift doesn’t give you the open-access underneath clearance that exhaust and driveline work wants.

We ask two questions on every farm shop call: what’s the heaviest vehicle you’ll ever put on it, and are you doing hands-on service or mostly storage. A 9,000 lb rating covers most trucks and full-size SUVs with margin, but if you’re occasionally loading heavier farm equipment or a dually, that number needs to go up before you buy, not after. Get this settled first because it drives every downstream decision — runway length, ramp style, and whether you need a rolling jack or mid-rise attachment for driveline access underneath.

Step 2: Confirm Ceiling Height and Door Clearance Together

Ceiling height gets all the attention, but door height is just as often the actual limiting factor, especially in pole buildings with lower overhead door openings than the walls suggest. We’ve had farm shop customers with 12-foot side walls who couldn’t fit a raised vehicle out through a 10-foot door — the lift worked fine, but nothing could drive off it once it was up and back down through that opening if service required moving it in and out.

Measure both numbers before you commit to a 4 car lift model: overall wall/ceiling height for the raised platform and vehicle clearance, and door height for anything that needs to drive in and out at ground level or post-service. If your farm shop has 11 to 12 foot ceilings, that typically works for most 4 post units at full rise, but always confirm the specific model’s raised height against your actual clearance, including any obstructions like door tracks or lighting.

Step 3: Sequence Your Concrete Pour Around the Lift, Not the Other Way Around

This is the step that gets skipped most often and causes the most expensive fixes. Standard concrete for a farm shop floor runs around 4 inches, which is workable for lighter mechanical 4-post units, but heavier hydraulic models or anything approaching 9,000 lbs with frequent cycling benefits from thicker slab or reinforcement in the footprint where the lift sits. If you’re pouring new concrete for a buildout, tell your contractor about the lift plans before the pour, not after.

Infloor heat and rebar mesh both change the anchoring and placement approach for certain lift styles, so if your farm shop plan includes infloor heat, that’s a detail we need on the very first call. We’ve adjusted footing plans specifically to route lift anchor points around heat lines rather than through them, and that’s a five-minute conversation before the pour and a much bigger problem after it’s cured.

Step 4: Plan Bay Width for Exhaust and Driveline Access, Not Just Parking

If your primary use case is exhaust work and driveline access rather than storage, your bay width and lift footprint needs change. You need room to roll a floor jack or transmission jack underneath, room for a tech to stand and work with a torch or reciprocating saw on an exhaust system without hitting support columns, and clearance on both sides for hoses and tool carts. A 4 car lift crammed against a shop wall on one side looks efficient on paper but turns every driveline job into an awkward stretch-and-crawl exercise.

We generally recommend at least 3 feet of clear space on the working side of the bay beyond the vehicle’s width, more if you’re regularly doing two-person jobs like dropping a full driveline. Farm shops built as 30×40 or larger give you room to do this properly; tighter buildings sometimes need to choose between storage capacity and true service functionality, and it’s better to make that tradeoff decision consciously before the walls go up than to discover it later.

Step 5: Decide Mobile vs Fixed Placement Early

Some farm shop owners want the option to relocate a 4 car lift within the building or even between buildings down the road, particularly if they’re not 100% locked into a permanent floor plan yet. Mobile or semi-portable configurations exist for lighter-duty applications, but they trade off some of the stability and maximum weight capacity you get with a properly anchored fixed installation.

If there’s any real chance you’ll want to move the equipment later, say so during the quote process — it changes both the model recommendation and the anchoring approach from day one. Retrofitting a fixed installation to become mobile later is rarely simple, while planning for mobility upfront costs little and preserves flexibility for a shop that might still be evolving its layout over the next several years.

Step 6: Order Delivery and Installation Logistics Before the Building Is Finished

Rural shop deliveries often hit a wall that urban shops don’t: no forklift on site, limited turning radius for a delivery truck, or a building that isn’t fully enclosed yet when the equipment is ready to ship. Tell us your site access situation — driveway width, whether you have material handling equipment on hand, and your building completion timeline — well before the lift ships, because rescheduling delivery around a farm’s calendar is a lot easier than rescheduling around a truck that’s already loaded.

We coordinate delivery-only, delivery-with-install, and full install packages depending on what a farm shop needs and what equipment is already on site. If you’re planning to do your own installation to save cost, tell us that upfront too — we’ll flag anything in the manufacturer’s spec that’s easy to miss, particularly around anchor bolt torque and concrete cure time, which are the two most common self-install mistakes we see corrected after the fact.

Step 7: Budget for Fluids, Accessories, and Follow-Up Service

The lift purchase itself isn’t the last cost in a buildout. Hydraulic fluid, casters or rolling jack attachments for driveline work, and any adapters for lower-clearance farm trucks all add to the real total, and it’s worth budgeting for them at the buildout stage rather than treating them as afterthoughts. Some farm shop owners ask us to include fluid with the initial order specifically so there’s no delay between delivery and first use.

Once your 4 car lift is installed, plan for periodic service too — cable inspections, hydraulic checks, and safety lock maintenance keep the equipment reliable for years of exhaust and driveline work rather than becoming a problem down the road.
