A weekend hobbyist in southeast Iowa called us with a question we hear constantly: he wanted a 4-post drive on car lift for basic maintenance, mainly CV axle and half-shaft replacement on a couple of daily drivers, and he had no idea where to start beyond “I want it to hold my car.” That’s a normal place to start, but there are at least six things that get overlooked before purchase and cause real headaches during install. Step One: Know Your Ceiling Height

Before anything else, measure your ceiling height accurately, from the floor to the lowest obstruction, not just the peak of the roof. We’ve had customers tell us they have 12-foot side walls only to find out a truss or a light fixture drops that usable height to 10 feet in the exact spot the lift needs to go. Step Two: Confirm Your Electrical Circuit and Phase

This is the item most hobbyist buyers skip, and it’s the one that stalls installations the most. Most home-garage 4-post lifts run on standard 110-volt or 220-volt single-phase power, which covers the vast majority of residential and pole-building setups. Commercial-grade units, especially higher-capacity Challenger or Rotary models, sometimes require 220-volt or three-phase circuits depending on the hydraulic power unit specified.

Before you buy a 4-post drive on car lift, walk out to your electrical panel and confirm what’s actually available near the install location, not just what’s available somewhere in the building. If you’re planning to add a dedicated circuit, get a rough quote from an electrician before finalizing your lift purchase so there are no surprises on install day. We always ask about electrical service during the sales conversation specifically because so many buyers assume any outlet nearby will work, and it often won’t for anything beyond the smallest units.

Step Three: Test Your Concrete Thickness and Condition

Concrete matters as much as electrical service, maybe more. Standard residential concrete pours run around 4 inches, and that’s typically fine for a home-garage 4-post lift used for maintenance rather than constant heavy-duty cycling. Shops with infloor heat, rebar, and 6-inch pours have more margin, but infloor heat and rebar also change how anchors get placed, so that needs to be flagged before install day, not discovered on-site.

If your slab is older, check for cracking, spalling, or unevenness anywhere near the planned install footprint. A 4-post drive on car lift distributes weight through four anchored posts, and uneven or compromised concrete under even one post can cause real problems once the lift is loaded and cycling regularly. We ask about concrete age, thickness, and condition on every quote call for exactly this reason, and we’d rather catch an issue over the phone than after a crew is already on-site.

Step Four: Nail Down Real Vehicle Weight, Not Guesswork

Weight capacity is where most buyers either overspend or underbuy. If you’re working on daily drivers and doing CV axle or half-shaft replacement, most passenger vehicles fall well under 7,000 pounds, and a lift rated in that range with reasonable margin covers the job comfortably. But if there’s any chance you’ll eventually store or service something heavier, like a full-size truck or a project vehicle, it’s worth building in extra capacity now rather than replacing the lift in a few years.

We also ask whether you plan to store a second vehicle underneath while the first sits raised. That changes clearance requirements and sometimes influences which model makes sense, since stacking storage under a raised vehicle demands more precise height planning than maintenance use alone. Get honest about your heaviest realistic vehicle before you buy, not your lightest one, so the lift you choose has margin instead of running at its rated limit every time you use it.

Step Five: Decide on Rolling Jacks and Casters Early

Rolling jacks, sometimes called sliding jacks, sit between the runways and let you lift a wheel independently for tire and brake work — genuinely useful even on a lift purchased mainly for CV axle and half-shaft jobs, since you’ll often need to spin a wheel or drop a hub during the repair. Decide whether you want this feature before ordering, because it affects runway spacing and sometimes total footprint.

Casters are a separate consideration entirely. Some buyers want the ability to reposition a 4-post drive on car lift around the shop floor while they finalize a permanent layout, essentially treating the lift as semi-mobile until they commit to a final spot. If that flexibility appeals to you, ask about caster kits specifically, since not every model supports them and retrofitting later is harder than specifying it up front.

Step Six: Plan the Footprint Against Your Actual Bay

A 30×40 pole building sounds spacious until you start subtracting workbenches, parts shelving, and walking clearance around a raised vehicle. Measure your actual bay width and length, then subtract at least a few feet of clearance on each side of the lift footprint for safe movement, especially if you’re planning to work underneath a car with tools spread out.

Also think about door swing and drive-on approach angle. A 4-post drive on car lift needs a straight, unobstructed approach for safe loading, so confirm there’s enough clear floor between your bay door and the runway ends before finalizing placement. Step Seven: Confirm Delivery, Install, and Support Terms

Confirm which one applies to you and get it in writing before the order ships, since assumptions here cause the most last-minute confusion we see.
