Most 4-post lifts are engineered around a fairly predictable weight and ride-height range. An overland-built truck throws that assumption out the window. Between the winch bumper, auxiliary fuel tank, rooftop tent, drawer system, and skid plates, our customer’s truck was pushing close to the top of what his lift’s 9,000-pound rating could handle, and the weight wasn’t distributed the way the factory truck was designed for. That uneven loading puts more side pressure on the runways and asks more of the cylinders on one side than the other.

Add in the fact that he was cycling the lift almost daily to get at the exhaust, transfer case, and rear differential, and you have a recipe for accelerated wear. A stock daily driver going up and down a 4-post drive on car lift twice a week barely stresses the hydraulics. No external fluid and a slow multi-hour settle told us this was almost certainly a seal problem inside the cylinder barrel, not a catastrophic failure. We recommended the owner switch to a quarterly fluid and seal inspection instead of the typical annual check, given how many cycles he puts on the equipment.
