Why Ceiling Height Makes or Breaks the Install
Most 4 post home garage lift units on the market top out somewhere between 75 and 84 inches of lifting height at full travel, and that’s before you add the vehicle sitting on the runways. If you’ve got a truck or an SUV that already stands 6 feet tall, you need enough overhead clearance to raise that vehicle to a comfortable working height without the roof kissing the rafters. We’ve installed these in garages with ceilings as low as 10 feet and as generous as 16 feet, and the difference in usable working height is significant. A garage with an 11-foot ceiling gives you enough room to get a truck up to a reasonable driveline-access height, but you won’t be standing fully upright underneath a raised full-size pickup the way you could with a 15-foot ceiling.
For exhaust and driveline work specifically, you don’t need to raise the vehicle to full height every time. Most people run these lifts at a mid-range height for that kind of work, which gives more flexibility on shorter ceilings than you’d think. Still, we always tell customers to measure from the finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction — including garage door tracks, light fixtures, and HVAC ductwork — not just to the drywall.
Door Swing and Runway Placement
Door swing gets overlooked constantly, and it’s one of the most common reasons an install gets delayed on-site. A 4 post home garage lift needs runways long enough to safely support a full-size vehicle, typically 14 to 16 feet with ramps included, and that length has to clear the garage door’s swing path or the door’s travel track if it’s an overhead door. In an oversized three-stall garage like the ones we see around Waukee and Ankeny, this usually isn’t a problem because there’s extra depth to work with. But in a standard two-car garage, we’ve had to reposition the runways closer to the back wall, or recommend a shorter platform configuration, to keep the vehicle clear of the door when it’s lifted and clear of the door track when it’s down.
We also look at side clearance for the support columns themselves. Each post needs a few inches of buffer from the wall for the safety-lock mechanism and cable routing to function properly, and you want enough width on both sides to comfortably open vehicle doors while the car is on the ground between uses.
Concrete Thickness and Anchoring for a Home Garage Lift
