4 Post Storage Car Lift Buyer’s Checklist for Cedar Rapids Garages

A weekend hobbyist mechanic in Cedar Rapids called us last winter with a familiar problem: he wanted to store his second car up in the air over his daily driver, but he also wanted to be able to drop the oil pan on his project car without crawling around on the concrete. That’s the exact intersection where a 4 post storage car lift earns its keep, and it’s also where a lot of buyers make mistakes they regret two years later when it’s time to sell or trade the unit in. Before you order one, run through the checklist below.

Item 1: Confirm Your Ceiling Height Before Anything Else

The single most common mistake we see hobbyist buyers make is ordering a 4 post storage car lift before measuring their actual ceiling height, including any garage door track, light fixtures, or ceiling-mounted storage racks that hang lower than the roofline. In Cedar Rapids garages we’ve measured everywhere from 9-foot flat ceilings to 12-foot side walls in newer pole-style outbuildings, and the difference changes what’s even possible. If you want to store a car on top and still stand up underneath it to work on a project car below, you need enough clearance for the raised vehicle plus a few feet of headroom for yourself.

We tell every hobbyist the same thing: measure twice, and measure the lowest point in the bay, not the highest. A ceiling fan or a stray HVAC duct three feet off-center from where you thought the lift would sit has ruined more than one weekend project before it started. If your ceiling is under 10 feet, a full-rise 4 post configuration probably won’t leave enough room to work standing up underneath — a low-rise or mid-rise alternative might serve you better, and we’ll tell you that honestly instead of selling you the wrong unit.

Item 2: Match the Weight Rating to What You’ll Actually Store

Weight ratings on a 4 post storage car lift typically run from 7,000 pounds up to 12,000 for heavier-duty home units. For most weekend hobbyist mechanics storing a daily driver or a lighter project car, 7,000 to 9,000 pounds covers it comfortably. Where we see people overspend is buying a 12,000 pound commercial-grade unit for a car that weighs 3,500 pounds — that’s not wrong exactly, but it’s money that could go toward accessories like a rolling jack or a better set of casters instead.

Where we see people underspend is the opposite mistake: buying the cheapest 7,000 pound unit and then deciding a year later to store a truck or an SUV on it. Think about what you might own in five years, not just what’s in the garage today. A 4 post storage car lift is a long-term purchase, and upgrading weight capacity later means buying a whole new unit, not swapping a part.

Item 3: Decide If You Need a Rolling Jack for Pan Work

If your plan includes actual maintenance work — and oil pan gasket jobs are one of the most common reasons hobbyists ask us about this — you need to think through how you’ll access the underside of the vehicle while it’s on the runways. A basic 4 post storage car lift raises the car on two parallel runways with open space underneath, which is great for oil pan gasket work since you’ve got a full-height clearance to roll a drain pan and catch container under the engine without any cross-member in the way.

Where it gets trickier is if you also want to pull a wheel while the car’s up there. That’s when a rolling bridge jack pays off — it lets you lift one end slightly higher off the runways to drop a tire, without needing a second lift or a floor jack wedged awkwardly under a raised vehicle. For pure oil pan and fluid work, though, the flat runway design of a standard storage unit is honestly all you need. Don’t pay for a rolling jack accessory if oil changes and gasket work are the extent of your DIY ambitions.

Item 4: Check the Slab Before You Fall in Love With a Model

Every 4 post storage car lift needs a solid, level concrete slab, and the anchor pattern for the front and rear columns has to land on concrete thick enough to hold the load — generally a minimum of 4 inches of solid, unreinforced or reinforced concrete for lighter home units. Cedar Rapids garages built in the last couple decades are usually fine, but older detached garages sometimes have thinner or cracked slabs that need evaluation before installation.

We always ask for slab thickness and age before finalizing a quote, and if there’s any doubt, we’d rather send someone out to look at it than have a customer anchor a lift into a slab that can’t handle it. Infloor heat and rebar are common in newer Iowa builds and generally aren’t a problem, but they do change where anchors can safely go, so mention it upfront rather than after delivery.

Item 5: Think About Resale Before You Pick a Brand

Not all 4 post storage car lift brands hold value the same way. We only sell BendPak and Atlas for home and hobbyist installations because they’re the two brands with the parts availability and name recognition to actually resell well in Iowa. A no-name import lift might save you money upfront, but when it’s time to sell, buyers ask what brand it is, and an unrecognized name tanks the resale price even if the unit works fine.

We’ve seen well-maintained BendPak and Atlas units resell for a healthy percentage of original cost within the first five years, especially with documented installation and service records. Keep your original invoice, note the installer, and if we did your install, we keep records on file that we can provide to a future buyer as proof of professional setup. That paperwork adds real dollars to a resale conversation.

Item 6: Understand Trade-In Value if You’re Upgrading Later

Some Cedar Rapids customers start with a basic 4 post storage car lift and later want to trade up to a two-post or a heavier-duty unit as their garage projects get more ambitious. We do accept trade-ins on functioning used lifts toward a new purchase, and the value depends heavily on brand, age, and condition of the hydraulics and cables. A well-maintained BendPak or Atlas unit with working cylinders and no structural rust holds trade-in value far better than a neglected unit with a seized rolling jack or corroded cables.

If trade-in flexibility matters to you, that’s another reason to stick with allowlisted brands and to do basic maintenance — cable inspection, hydraulic fluid checks, keeping it covered from moisture — from day one. A unit that’s been babied for three years is worth meaningfully more toward a trade than one that’s been ignored, even if both technically still function.

Item 7: Get the Delivery and Install Question Settled Upfront

Finally, decide whether you want full installation or delivery-only before you order. Some hobbyists are comfortable running the lift around their garage on casters to test placement before committing to a permanent anchor location, which is a smart way to dial in exactly where you want it relative to a workbench or a second vehicle. Others want it installed and anchored on day one so they can start working immediately.

We offer both, and for Cedar Rapids customers we can usually schedule delivery or full installation within a reasonable window depending on the season. If you’re planning oil pan work or other maintenance soon after purchase, we’d lean toward getting it anchored properly rather than leaving it on casters — a lift that shifts slightly under load while you’re under a car is not where you want to find out your leveling was off.
