A 4 post storage car lift needs power to run the hydraulic pump, and if you’re setting one up for a small fleet doing routine oil changes and fluid service in the Des Moines metro, the electrical question comes up before the lift even ships. We’ve quoted this exact scenario more than once: a fleet operator with a handful of service vehicles wants a lift that can hold a car for storage overnight and still get pulled into rotation for a quick oil change the next morning. The lift itself is usually the easy decision. The circuit it plugs into is where shops get surprised, so let’s compare two realistic configurations side by side.

Configuration One: Standard 220V Single-Phase Circuit

Most 4 post storage car lift units sold for home garages and small fleet bays run on a 220-volt single-phase circuit, usually pulling somewhere in the 15 to 20 amp range depending on the pump motor. This is the same type of circuit that runs a household electric dryer or a welder, and most small commercial buildings in the Des Moines metro already have something close to this available, or can add it without a major panel upgrade.

For a fleet operator running a handful of vehicles through oil changes and fluid service, single-phase is usually more than enough. The pump only runs for the 30 to 60 seconds it takes to raise or lower the platform, so you’re not looking at continuous draw. The tradeoff is that single-phase motors on a 4 post storage car lift can be a little slower to rise under a heavier vehicle load, and if you’re running multiple lifts on the same panel, you need to plan the circuit count accordingly rather than daisy-chaining them off one breaker.

Configuration Two: 3-Phase Circuit for Higher-Volume Bays

If your fleet operation is bigger, or you’re running multiple lifts and other shop equipment simultaneously, a 3-phase circuit changes the picture. Not every 4 post storage car lift is available with a 3-phase motor option, but for operators who already have 3-phase power in the building for compressors or other equipment, it’s worth asking about when you request a quote.

The advantage of 3-phase is more consistent motor performance and less strain when several pieces of equipment draw power at once, which matters more in a shop running six or eight vehicles a day through service bays than in a garage storing one or two cars. The downside is availability and cost. Not every distributor stocks 3-phase pump packages for every model, and if your building doesn’t already have 3-phase run to it, adding it is a bigger electrical project than adding a single 220V circuit. For most small fleet operators in the Des Moines metro doing routine oil changes rather than heavy diagnostic or drivetrain work, single-phase is still the more practical choice.

Side by Side: Which One Fits Your Bay

Here’s how we’d break it down for a customer standing in front of us. If you’re running one or two 4 post storage car lift units, doing oil changes and fluid service, and your building has standard commercial power, go single-phase. It’s cheaper to install, easier to service, and plenty capable for the duty cycle of routine maintenance work.

If you’re running three or more lifts, already have 3-phase in the building, or you’re mixing in heavier equipment like tire machines and alignment racks on the same electrical service, 3-phase is worth the extra planning. We walk through amperage draw, existing panel capacity, and how many pieces of equipment will realistically run at the same time before recommending either path. Guessing on this now costs a lot more to fix later than asking the question up front.

Panel Capacity and Circuit Count for Multiple Lifts

A single 4 post storage car lift is a modest electrical load, but fleet operators rarely stop at one. If you’re installing two, three, or more lifts in the same building, you need to know your panel’s total capacity, not just whether one circuit is available. We’ve had customers assume they had room for a second lift only to find out the panel was already near capacity once other shop equipment was accounted for.

Plan circuit count before you order equipment, not after. A licensed electrician can tell you in one visit whether your panel supports two or three 220V circuits for lift pumps plus your existing lighting, compressor, and tool loads. We’d rather you make that call before the lifts arrive than have a crew show up to install and find out there’s no power available at the bay.

Where the Circuit Should Terminate Relative to the Lift

Placement matters almost as much as capacity. The disconnect or outlet for a 4 post storage car lift needs to be close enough to the power unit that you’re not running a long extension cord across a bay where vehicles and foot traffic move constantly. Most installers want the circuit terminated within a few feet of where the hydraulic power unit will sit, which is usually near one of the rear columns.

For fleet bays where the lift might be relocated later, or where casters are being used to reposition equipment before a final decision on layout, it’s worth running the circuit with a little slack or planning a junction box rather than a hard-wired terminal right at one fixed point. That flexibility costs a little more up front but saves a rewiring job if the bay layout changes six months in.

Before we quote a 4 post storage car lift for a fleet setup, we ask about existing panel capacity, whether the building already has 3-phase, how many lifts are planned, and what kind of service work — oil changes and fluid service versus heavier drivetrain work — will actually happen on those lifts day to day.
