We recently worked with a Cedar Rapids customer building out a lifted mid-size truck for long-distance overland trips, and his biggest frustration wasn’t storage space — it was that every exhaust modification, skid plate install, and driveline inspection meant crawling around on a creeper or borrowing a friend’s shop with a two-post. He wanted a lift that could store the truck between build sessions but still give him real access underneath whenever inspiration struck at 9pm on a weeknight.

Why an Overlanding Build Needs More Than a Parking Lift

Most people think of a 4-post storage lift as a way to park a car off the ground and reclaim garage floor space. That’s true, but for a build project centered on exhaust work and driveline access, the lift has to do double duty. Overlanding rigs typically run larger tires, lifted suspension, aftermarket skid plates, and heavier bumpers — all of which add curb weight and change the underside geometry compared to a stock truck.

Our Cedar Rapids customer was swapping in a cat-back exhaust, relocating some driveline components for tire clearance, and planned future work on differential and transfer case service. None of that is possible on a lift that just holds the vehicle up without room to move a jack, roll a cart of tools, or stand comfortably underneath. So instead of recommending a basic parking-style unit, we spec’d a full-runway 4-post storage lift with enough capacity to handle the lifted truck’s actual weight, including aftermarket armor, plus clearance underneath that a mechanic can stand in without ducking.

Overhead vs Baseplate: The Real Decision Point

This is where the Cedar Rapids build got interesting. His garage had roughly 11 feet of ceiling height, which is workable but tight for some overhead-configuration lifts once you add the height of the columns, the vehicle, and the tire size on a lifted truck. We ran the numbers on both configurations before deciding.

An overhead configuration connects the four columns with a beam at the top, which keeps the entire floor clear — no beam to step over, no obstruction when rolling tool carts or a floor jack underneath. That’s ideal for driveline and exhaust work where you want unrestricted floor access. But overhead units need more total vertical clearance, and once you stack a lifted truck with 35-inch tires on top of the platform, you can run out of room fast. A baseplate configuration, by contrast, connects the columns near floor level, trading a low crossover beam you step over for meaningfully less required ceiling height.

Why We Chose Baseplate for This Build

Given his 11-foot ceiling and the lifted truck’s height, we recommended a baseplate configuration. It cost him a shallow beam to step over at the base of the runway, but it kept the whole setup well within his ceiling clearance even fully loaded with a truck that already sits several inches taller than stock. We also made sure the baseplate beam didn’t interfere with rolling a floor jack under the front or rear axle independently, since that’s central to how he does driveline and exhaust work.

We’ve seen customers get talked into overhead configurations because they look cleaner in photos, only to find out later their lifted vehicle plus tire size doesn’t leave enough headroom to safely raise the lift to full height. Measuring first — actual vehicle height with the exhaust system routed and tires mounted, not spec sheet numbers — is what kept this build from turning into a costly mistake.

Capacity: Accounting for Armor, Winches, and Aftermarket Weight

Overlanding builds are notorious for weight creep. Skid plates, rock sliders, a winch bumper, roof rack, and recovery gear can add over a thousand pounds to a truck that started out well within a standard lift’s rating. We asked for a realistic loaded weight estimate, not the factory curb weight, before finalizing the capacity on this Cedar Rapids install.

The truck ended up needing a 4-post storage lift rated comfortably above what the factory spec sheet would have suggested, simply because of the aftermarket armor and recovery gear already bolted on, with more planned. We’d rather size up once during the initial quote than have a customer find out the hard way that a heavily built truck is pushing the limits of a lift that was chosen based on stock weight. This is a common miscalculation with overlanding and off-road builds specifically, and it’s one of the first questions we ask now.

Runway Length for Larger Tires and Longer Wheelbases

Lifted trucks with larger tires often have a wider track and, depending on the model, a longer wheelbase than what a standard-length runway assumes. We measured the customer’s truck with tires mounted, not the stock spec, and made sure the runway length and width gave enough margin that he wouldn’t be creeping tires right up to the edge of the platform every time he parked it.

This matters more for a project vehicle than a daily driver because the truck’s dimensions may keep changing as the build progresses — bigger tires, a longer bumper, or a swing-out tire carrier can all add inches. We built in extra margin on runway length specifically because this vehicle isn’t a fixed spec, it’s a build in progress, and the 4-post storage lift needed room to grow with it.

Installation and Access Considerations in a Cedar Rapids Garage

The physical install in Cedar Rapids went smoothly once we confirmed slab thickness could handle the anchor pattern for this capacity tier. We also positioned the lift with enough side clearance for the customer to walk fully around the vehicle at full height, since exhaust and driveline work often means accessing both sides and working from underneath at the same time.

We ran a full load test with the truck on the platform before finishing the job, checking that the lift held level with the truck’s actual off-center weight distribution from the winch bumper and aftermarket armor. That kind of real-world test matters more for a modified vehicle than a stock one, since aftermarket weight isn’t always centered the way factory engineers intended. Every 4-post storage lift we install for a build like this gets that same load verification before we call the job done.

What Other Overlanding Builders in Iowa Should Take Away

If you’re building a lifted or off-road rig and thinking about a 4-post storage lift, don’t just size for the truck as it sits today. Account for the armor, tires, and gear you plan to add, measure actual height and width with those additions in mind, and choose overhead or baseplate configuration based on your real ceiling clearance — not the number on a spec sheet.
