A 4-post storage lift is often the first big equipment decision a new restoration shop owner makes, and it is easy to get overwhelmed by model numbers, capacity ratings, and add-on options before you even know your budget. Step Two: Storage-Only or Storage-Plus-Work?

This is the fork in the road that changes everything downstream. If a restoration shop only needs to park finished or waiting vehicles up top to free floor space, a basic 4-post storage lift with a solid runway is enough. But most restoration work involves getting underneath a car for exactly the kind of job this Dubuque shop needed: pulling an oil pan, replacing a gasket, dealing with a seep that’s been staining the shop floor for months. Mid-tier and commercial models add wider runways for easier vehicle loading, additional lock positions for safer under-vehicle work, and often a more robust hydraulic pump and cylinder setup rated for daily commercial cycles rather than occasional home use.

For a restoration shop doing regular oil pan gasket work, brake jobs, or suspension work under raised vehicles, we usually steer owners toward at least a mid-tier model even if their weight needs could technically be met by an entry-level unit. The extra lock positions and wider runway make day-to-day technician work meaningfully safer and faster, and that time savings adds up across dozens of jobs a year in a working shop.

Step Five: Installation, Concrete, and Long-Term Care

The final branch of the decision tree is installation and the ongoing care that keeps a 4-post storage lift running for years. Concrete thickness and condition matter, especially in older shop buildings where the slab may not match modern commercial pour standards.
