The Site Survey We Ran Before Recommending Anything

Before comparing configurations, we did a basic site survey the same way we do for every install — even portable ones. The northwest Iowa shop had a single service stall with concrete flooring in reasonable condition, an 8-foot ceiling height that limited full-lift options, and van traffic in and out multiple times a day. That last detail mattered more than anything else: whichever setup we recommended had to get out of the way fast when it wasn’t in use, because the bay doubled as a parking and staging area between routes.

We measured door width, checked for floor drains near the likely lift footprint, and confirmed the concrete slab thickness with a quick core reference from when the building was poured. None of that takes long, but skipping it is how shops end up with equipment that doesn’t actually work in the space they have. Setup One: Wheel-in Portable Frame Configuration

The second configuration used a pair of mobile columns rather than a single frame unit. Mobile columns lift the vehicle at the wheels rather than the frame or a platform, and they can be positioned and stored independently, which solved the staging-space problem directly. When not in use, the columns rolled to a wall and took up a fraction of the footprint of the frame-style setup.

For differential fluid service, mobile columns raised the vehicle to a comfortable working height with full access underneath — no platform or frame in the way at all. The 8-foot ceiling wasn’t an issue since columns don’t require overhead structure. The one real limitation is that mobile columns typically come in sets designed for specific axle counts and vehicle types, so we confirmed the van models in this fleet matched a standard two-column or four-column setup before recommending it. Why We Recommended the Mobile Column Setup

The frame-style unit wasn’t a bad choice on paper — it’s a legitimate option for shops with dedicated lift space — but it didn’t fit this specific bay as well.

We also factored in how the operator planned to use the lift long term. He mentioned wanting to eventually add brake service to his in-house capabilities, and mobile columns tend to offer more flexibility for that kind of expansion since they’re not tied to one fixed platform size. For this fleet, we also set up a simple storage routine — designated wall space for the columns when not in use, and a quick pre-shift check that confirmed both columns were charged and synced before the first vehicle of the day went up. That kind of routine matters more for fleet operations than single-vehicle home garages, since equipment gets used daily by potentially different people and small maintenance habits add up over a busy service schedule.

What This Comparison Means for Other Northwest Iowa Fleets

We’ve since used this same comparison process — frame-style versus mobile column — with several other fleet operators across northwest Iowa, and the right answer genuinely depends on the site. Shops with dedicated lift bays and no staging pressure often do fine with a frame-style 7000 lb portable car lift.
