So why spec a 9000 lb car lift instead of a lighter-duty 7,000 or 8,000 lb unit? Headroom on the rating matters more than people assume. Techs routinely load a lift with a customer vehicle plus a transmission jack, engine support fixture, or a second set of hands leaning on a fender — and CV axle jobs on trucks and larger crossovers with independent front and rear suspensions can push combined static and dynamic loads higher than the vehicle’s curb weight alone suggests.

If your bay has the ceiling height, overhead wins for pure workflow efficiency on high-volume axle days. Arm Reach and Pad Height for Axle Access

CV axle and half-shaft jobs live or die on how well the technician can position the vehicle relative to the arms without the lift’s own hardware blocking the boot, the hub, or the inner tripod joint. On a 9000 lb car lift, look for asymmetric arm geometry — front arms angled to clear the doors, rear arms with enough reach to land on the frame rail or pinch point behind the rear axle without crowding the differential or subframe on AWD platforms.

Concrete and Anchoring Requirements Techs Overlook

For a bay dedicated to axle, brake, and suspension work, though, the 2-post configuration at this capacity gives the best access-to-footprint ratio.
