The Builder’s Problem: One Bay, Two Vehicles, One Season

The builder we worked with is putting together a pole building shop in the 30×40 range with concrete floors and roughly 12-foot side walls — plenty of height, but a footprint that had to work double duty. He runs a daily driver and a heavily modified overlanding rig that only sees regular use a few months out of the year. During the off-season, the build-out truck needed somewhere to sit that wasn’t just parked on the slab soaking up moisture and taking up the entire bay.

His ask to us was straightforward: something that could lift a passenger vehicle in the 7,000 lb range or under, since the overlanding rig with its aftermarket bumpers, winch, and roof-top tent setup wasn’t a light truck anymore. He wanted to store one vehicle up on the lift and park a second vehicle underneath it, effectively doubling his usable floor space in a building that otherwise would’ve had one bay permanently tied up for half the year. That’s a common ask from builders with a serious rig and a normal-sized garage — the lift isn’t for repair work, it’s for space.

Why a Car Lift Beats a Tarp for Seasonal Storage

It’s tempting to think seasonal storage just means finding a corner and throwing a cover over the rig until spring. But a rig with a lifted suspension, aftermarket armor, and off-road tires sitting on a concrete floor all winter is exposed to moisture wicking up through the slab, tire flat-spotting under sustained static weight, and — in an unheated pole building — temperature swings that stress seals and rubber components. Getting the vehicle up off the ground on a car lift removes weight from the tires entirely and keeps it out of ground-level moisture and road salt drift that tracks in even when the vehicle itself isn’t moving.

For a build with real money invested in suspension, armor, and drivetrain modifications, that protection isn’t cosmetic — it’s resale value protection. A buyer inspecting a used overlanding rig checks for flat-spotted tires, rust creep on the frame, and suspension components that sat compressed for months without cycling. Storing the vehicle on a lift during the off-season keeps the suspension unloaded and the tires round, which matters a lot more at resale time than most owners realize until they’re the one shopping for a used build and walking away from one with obvious storage neglect.

Choosing the Right Lift for a 7,000 lb Overlanding Rig

Weight rating drove most of the model conversation for this build. A stock half-ton truck comes in well under 7,000 lbs, but once you add a winch bumper, sliders, a roof-top tent, recovery gear, and a full-size spare, that number climbs fast — and builders consistently underestimate their actual as-built weight until we ask for real numbers. We spec every seasonal storage lift with margin above the vehicle’s actual weight, not its factory curb weight, because a car lift rated right at the edge of your rig’s weight isn’t where you want to be for something sitting parked for months at a time.

For this install, we landed on a 4-post storage-rated lift rather than a 2-post, specifically because he wanted to drive the vehicle straight up onto the platform without needing to line up frame contact points precisely — a real advantage when you’re storing a vehicle for months and don’t want load concentrated on a couple of pinch-welds. The 4-post platform design also let him park the daily driver directly underneath, using the full vertical space of those 12-foot walls instead of leaving it wasted air above a single parked truck.

Sizing the Bay: Fitting Two Vehicles Into One Footprint

A 30×40 pole building sounds spacious until you start planning two vehicles, a workbench, and walking clearance around all of it. We measured the bay against the specific lift model’s footprint, plus clearance for the runway approach and enough overhead room for the platform, the stored vehicle’s roof-top tent, and a safety margin below the ceiling trusses. Twelve-foot side walls gave him just enough vertical room to fit a lifted vehicle in storage position above a normal daily driver without either vehicle feeling cramped underneath.

We also planned for approach angle into the building — an overlanding rig with front and rear bumpers extending past stock dimensions needs a wider turning radius to line up straight on a car lift’s runways than a stock pickup does. Getting the platform position and runway length right on paper before the concrete work and electrical hookup happened saved a redo later, and it’s a step we walk through with every seasonal storage install regardless of vehicle type.

What This Means for Resale and Trade-In Value

Overlanding builds hold their value differently than stock vehicles — buyers in that market pay close attention to how a rig was maintained and stored, not just miles and cosmetic condition. A build that’s spent its off-seasons up on a car lift, tires unloaded and suspension uncompressed, shows better at resale or trade-in than an identical build that sat on its tires in a driveway for four months every winter. We’ve seen this play out directly with builders who eventually sell or trade a rig — the storage history becomes part of the pitch to a serious buyer who knows what to look for.

It’s a smaller factor than mileage or drivetrain condition, but in a market where buyers are comparing similarly built rigs against each other, storage practice is a differentiator that costs nothing extra to mention and photograph. A seller who can say the vehicle spent its off-season on a dedicated car lift rather than parked on concrete has a genuine edge in that negotiation, especially with buyers who’ve done their homework on tire flat-spotting and suspension sag.

The Install Day: From Concrete to Cycling the Lift

Once the model was chosen and the bay measured, the install itself followed our standard process for a home-shop 4-post unit: verifying the concrete slab met the manufacturer’s minimum thickness spec, setting the runways level and square to each other, anchoring the columns, and running the full cycle test empty before ever putting a vehicle on the platform. Pole building slabs vary a lot in quality depending on when they were poured and by whom, so confirming the slab before anchoring is a step we don’t skip, even on a straightforward residential job like this one.

After the cycle test passed clean, we walked the owner through loading the vehicle onto the platform correctly, setting the safety locks, and the basic maintenance he’d need to do periodically to keep the lift ready for years of seasonal use. For a builder storing a vehicle for months at a stretch, that maintenance routine matters more than it would for a shop cycling a lift daily, since a unit that sits loaded and static for long periods needs its own periodic check to make sure everything’s still holding as expected.
