Most storage buildings for collector vehicles in the Iowa Great Lakes region weren’t built with a lift in mind — they were built for parking. That means when we get a call about an a0436 configuration, the first thing we ask isn’t about the vehicle, it’s about the trusses. Post-mounted lifts need enough headroom for the vehicle plus the carriage travel plus a safety margin above the highest point of the raised car, and in older pole barns that number can be tighter than owners expect. We’ve measured buildings where the owner swore they had fourteen feet and we found closer to eleven and a half once we accounted for truss webbing and lighting fixtures.

The a0436 arrangement tends to work well in these buildings specifically because the geometry keeps the overall lift height reasonable compared to some alternatives, without sacrificing the lifting capacity a collector needs for full-frame cars and trucks. What Suspension Work Actually Demands From the Lift

Shock and strut jobs put different stress on a lift than an oil change does. You’re working with the wheels off, sometimes with a spring compressor under load, and you need the arms locked in a position that keeps weight centered even as you remove components from one corner at a time. We’ve seen owners try to do this kind of work on lifts that were sized for light duty, and the imbalance becomes obvious fast — the car settles unevenly on the arms as weight shifts.

For an a0436 install specifically, anchor spacing and torque specs are documented by the manufacturer and we don’t deviate from them regardless of how confident a floor looks. Older buildings sometimes have control joints or old equipment pads that interfere with ideal post placement, and working around those without compromising anchor performance is part of what a proper site visit accomplishes before the crew shows up with the actual lift. Skipping this step to save a visit fee almost always costs more later.

Electrical and Power Requirements for a Storage Building Install

Many collector storage buildings run on minimal electrical service — enough for lighting and maybe a compressor, not necessarily sized for a lift motor plus everything else running at once. Before an a0436 install, we confirm voltage, amperage, and whether the building’s existing circuit can handle the lift on its own dedicated line, which is what we always recommend rather than sharing a circuit with other shop equipment.

Owners who are already planning shocks and suspension work down the road should also think about air line placement at the same time as the electrical work, since impact guns and spring compressors both need reliable air at the lift location, not twenty feet away with a hose snaking across the floor. Getting the electrical and air infrastructure right during the same visit that handles the a0436 install saves a second round of construction later, and it’s cheaper to run conduit once than to retrofit a finished building.

Maintenance Habits That Keep the Lift Ready for Suspension Jobs

Because collector vehicles don’t get driven daily, the lift holding them often doesn’t get used daily either, and that idle time changes the maintenance conversation. Hydraulic fluid can sit for months without a full cycle, cables can develop slack that only shows up under load, and safety locks can accumulate dust if the building isn’t sealed tight. We tell every a0436 owner to run a full up-down cycle monthly even with nothing on the lift, just to keep seals conditioned and catch any developing issue before a real job.

When the first big suspension job does come around, a quick pre-use check — cable tension, lock engagement, arm pin security — takes five minutes and prevents almost every safety incident we’ve ever investigated.
