If you’re setting up an EV specialty shop in Iowa City and you think any old concrete floor will hold above ground automotive lifts once the anchors go in, you’re about to make a mistake that costs a lot more than a lift. We’ve walked into more than one new shop where the slab was poured for foot traffic and parking, not for a two-post lift carrying a battery-pack-heavy EV sedan or crossover. Myth: Any 4-Inch Slab Will Hold a Two-Post Lift

This is the myth we hear most from new shop owners, and it’s wrong more often than it’s right. A 4-inch slab can absolutely work for above ground automotive lifts — but only if it’s the right concrete, poured at the right strength, cured long enough, and free of cracks near the anchor points. Most residential and light-commercial slabs are poured at 3,000 PSI. Lift manufacturers like Rotary and Challenger generally spec a minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete cured for at least 28 days, with no rebar or wire mesh sitting in the top few inches where anchors need to bite. Rebar isn’t a bonus for lift anchoring — it’s often a liability, because it prevents anchors from reaching solid, undisturbed concrete and can crack the slab when the anchor bolt torques against it.

For EV service bays specifically, we push shop owners to go thicker than code minimum. EV curb weights run 20-30% heavier than comparable gas vehicles once you add the battery pack, and that weight is concentrated low and centered rather than spread the way an engine and drivetrain spread it. We recommend a minimum of 4.5 to 5 inches of properly cured, rebar-free concrete at each anchor pad for any above ground automotive lifts rated 10,000 lbs or higher, which covers most EV-capable two-post and four-post configurations. If your Iowa City slab is older, has visible cracking, or was poured with mesh close to the surface, we test it before we let you bolt anything down.

Above Ground Automotive Lifts vs. Inground: Why EV Shops Choose Above Ground

EV shops almost universally choose above ground automotive lifts over inground lifts, and slab condition is a big part of why. Inground lifts require a cylinder buried below the floor, which means excavation, drainage considerations, and a much bigger commitment to the slab you’re pouring or cutting into. For a new EV shop still figuring out bay layout, above ground equipment gives you the flexibility to move a lift, add a second bay, or resell the equipment if your business changes direction.

There’s also a serviceability argument. EV battery packs sit low and wide, and techs need clear access to the pack, the underbody shielding, and high-voltage disconnects. A two-post or four-post above ground lift gives you full underside access with nothing buried in the floor to route around. We install both configurations across Iowa, but for oil changes, fluid service, tire rotations, and general EV maintenance work, above ground automotive lifts are the more practical, more flexible choice for a shop that’s still growing into its space.

Matching Lift Capacity to What You’re Actually Servicing

Fluid service and general maintenance on EVs doesn’t require the same brute capacity as heavy-duty truck work, but it does require margin. A shop doing oil changes, coolant loop service, and tire work on EV sedans and crossovers should be looking at a 9,000 to 12,000 lb capacity two-post lift at minimum, not the 7,000 lb capacity that’s fine for a typical gas sedan. That extra headroom matters because EV weight isn’t going down — new models keep getting heavier, and you don’t want to replace your lift in three years because you undersized it.

We also tell shop owners to think about arm reach and pad placement, not just capacity. EV battery packs and structural rails don’t always line up with where a traditional lift arm wants to sit. Rotary and Challenger both build arm configurations with the reach and pad flexibility to find safe lift points on EV platforms, and that’s part of why we stick with those two brands for commercial work — the engineering and the pad kits keep pace with how vehicles are actually built.

Anchoring: The Step That Gets Skipped Under Deadline Pressure

We understand the pressure. You’ve got a lease, a grand opening date, and equipment sitting on a truck. But anchoring above ground automotive lifts correctly is not optional, and it’s not something to rush because you’re behind schedule. Every anchor bolt has a specified embedment depth, torque spec, and minimum edge distance from the nearest slab joint or crack. Skip any of those and you have a lift that looks installed but isn’t actually rated for the load you’re about to put on it.

We run a concrete inspection as a standard part of every install quote in Iowa, specifically because we’ve seen too many shops find out about a bad slab only after the anchors won’t torque properly or start working loose within the first year. If your Iowa City slab needs remediation — patching, an overlay, or in some cases a full re-pour at the bay — better to know that before your grand opening than after a lift starts creaking under a car.

What EV Shop Owners Get Wrong About Lift Height and Ceiling Clearance

Concrete gets all the attention, but ceiling clearance trips up just as many new EV shops. A two-post lift raised to full height with a crossover on it can need 12 to 14 feet of clearance depending on the model. If your building has lower ceilings, ductwork, or lighting fixtures in the way, you need to know that before the lift shows up, not after. We ask about ceiling height on every quote call for exactly this reason.

This is also where mid-rise and scissor lifts sometimes make more sense for EV shops doing primarily fluid service and light maintenance rather than full disassembly work. A mid-rise lift raises the car to a comfortable working height without needing the full clearance a two-post lift demands, and for oil changes, brake work, and tire service, that’s often plenty of lift. We’ll walk through both options with you rather than defaulting to whatever’s easiest to sell.

Planning Bay Layout for Above Ground Automotive Lifts in a New Shop

A 30×40 or similar pole-building shop layout gives you real flexibility, but it’s easy to underestimate how much floor space above ground automotive lifts actually need once you account for door swing, arm sweep, and walkway clearance around a raised vehicle. We generally recommend at least 12 feet of width per bay for a two-post lift, more if you’re running EVs with wider stances or larger tires.

Plan for growth too. If you’re installing one lift now but expect to add a second bay within a couple years, it’s worth roughing in the electrical and compressed air lines for both bays during your initial buildout, even if the second lift comes later. It’s a lot cheaper to run conduit once than to trench a finished slab a second time.
