An above ground lift solves that problem, but not every lift on the market is built the same, and not every warranty behind it is worth the paper it’s printed on. Start With Your Actual Use Case, Not the Cheapest Sticker Price
Before you look at a single spec sheet, be honest about what you’re going to do under the vehicle. Exhaust and driveline access is different from full engine-out restoration work. If you’re mostly crawling under a truck to swap a muffler, replace u-joints, or do brake and suspension work, you don’t necessarily need the tallest, heaviest-duty above ground lift on the lot. A mid-rise or a 2-post model in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range covers the vast majority of home garage exhaust and driveline jobs with room to spare.
Where people get burned is buying based on price alone and discovering later that the lift’s arm reach or lifting height doesn’t work for their trucks. We had a farm owner in the Midwest tell us exactly this: he does his own maintenance, has plenty of equipment already, and just wanted a straightforward suggestion in a medium price range rather than the bargain-bin option or the top-shelf commercial unit. That’s the right instinct. Match the above ground lift to your ceiling height, your vehicle mix, and how often you’ll actually use it — not to whatever number shows up first in a search.
Check the Warranty Structure Before You Check the Price
Every above ground lift warranty is not structured the same way, and the differences matter more once something breaks. Look specifically at three things: how long the structural components (columns, carriages, arms) are covered versus the hydraulic components (cylinders, pumps, hoses, cables), and whether labor is included or just parts. A lift with a 10-year structural warranty but only a 1-year parts warranty on the hydraulics is common, and that’s fine as long as you know it going in.
Ask the dealer directly: who processes the claim, and how fast do they typically turn it around? Some manufacturers require you to go through the original selling dealer, which is a problem if that dealer is out of state or out of business. If you’re in eastern Nebraska, a dealer who has to ship a part across three states before someone can even look at your lift is a warranty in name only.
Know What Voids the Warranty Before You Install
The fastest way to lose warranty coverage on an above ground lift is improper installation or anchoring into a slab that doesn’t meet the manufacturer’s minimum thickness and cure-time requirements. Most manufacturers specify a minimum slab thickness (commonly 4 to 6 inches of properly cured concrete) and require anchors installed to spec. If you anchor into cracked or under-thickness concrete and a column shifts, that’s typically an installation issue, not a warranty issue, and the claim gets denied.
The other common voider is overloading. A 9,000 lb lift used repeatedly on a 10,500 lb dually is going to show stress on the hydraulics and structure well before its rated life, and manufacturers can usually tell. Keep your rated capacity with a safety margin above your heaviest vehicle, and keep basic maintenance records — even a simple notebook with oil changes and cable inspections — so if you ever do need to file a claim, you’re not starting from zero credibility.
What a Real Warranty Claim Looks Like Start to Finish
When something goes wrong with an above ground lift, the claim process usually starts with a phone call or photo submission describing the problem — a cylinder leaking, a cable fraying, a lock not engaging cleanly. A reputable dealer will ask for the serial number, install date, and a description or photo before doing anything else. From there, most straightforward parts (cables, hydraulic hoses, switches, locks) ship out under warranty within days, and you or your installer swap them.
For anything involving the hydraulic cylinder or a structural component, expect a technician visit rather than a mail-order fix. This is where buying from a company that actually installs and services lifts — rather than just drop-ships them — pays off. If a dealer can’t tell you who handles service calls in your area, that’s a red flag before you even sign the invoice.
Slab, Space, and Clearance: The Physical Checklist
Before your above ground lift even ships, measure your actual garage. You need clear ceiling height for the vehicle plus the lift’s rise, plus a few extra inches for antennas, roof racks, or lift arms in the up position. You also need enough width between columns to open truck doors fully, and enough depth in front of and behind the lift to actually maneuver a vehicle onto it without clipping a wall or a workbench.
Concrete matters just as much as square footage. A slab that’s cracked, spalling, or under the manufacturer’s minimum thickness needs to be addressed before installation, not after. If you’re not sure what your slab can handle, get a straight answer from your installer rather than guessing — this is one of the few parts of the process where a wrong assumption costs real money to fix later.
Two-Post Versus Four-Post for Exhaust and Driveline Work
For exhaust and driveline access specifically, a 2-post above ground lift generally gives you better access underneath because there’s no runway or bridge in the way — you can get a creeper or a transmission jack anywhere under the vehicle. A 4-post lift, by contrast, is easier to load solo and doubles as storage when you’re not working, but the runways can get in the way of certain driveline jobs unless the model has a sliding jack tray or removable crossmember.
If your garage is also doing double duty as extra parking or storage for a second vehicle, the 4-post starts to make more sense despite the slight access trade-off. If the lift’s only job is service work, the 2-post is usually the better tool. Either way, check that the model you’re considering has the arm configuration (symmetric or asymmetric) that fits how you actually position vehicles.
Buying From a Company That Installs, Not Just Ships
A lot of above ground lift sales happen entirely online with a freight truck dropping a crate at your driveway and a set of instructions you’re on your own to follow. That works for some experienced DIYers, but it also means if something’s bent in shipping, misaligned, or missing a part, you’re on the phone with a call center instead of a person who’s actually installed that exact model before.
