An above ground lift should be one of the easiest pieces of an EV specialty shop build-out, but we watch shop owners get it backwards constantly, especially when they’re sequencing a new build in Marion or anywhere else in the corridor. We recently worked with an EV specialty shop owner who was expanding into a new bay specifically for exhaust and driveline work on hybrid platforms, and he’d already ordered flooring, lighting, and even signage before calling us about the lift. That order of operations is exactly backwards, and it’s the single most common mistake we see. Here are the myths that trip up specialty shop owners during build-out, and what actually needs to happen first.

Myth: You Can Finish the Floor Plan Before Picking the Lift

This is the mistake that costs the most money to fix. An above ground lift needs a defined footprint, minimum ceiling clearance, and a slab that’s been verified for thickness and reinforcement before anything else in the bay gets finalized — flooring, lighting layout, even where the tool boxes go. The Marion shop owner we worked with had already installed epoxy flooring in the new bay before reaching out, and we had to have a hard conversation about whether the anchor points would land on decorative flooring that would need to be cut and patched.

The correct sequence is: verify or pour the slab, confirm ceiling height against the lift’s full-rise dimension, place the lift’s footprint on paper first, then build everything else — flooring, lighting, air lines, electrical drops — around that footprint. We now ask every specialty shop client to send us their bay dimensions and ceiling height before they sign off on any other build-out contractor’s work, specifically to avoid this exact situation.

Myth: Any 2-Post Lift Works Fine for Hybrid and EV Platforms

Hybrid and EV platforms have battery packs mounted low in the chassis, often running the full length of the vehicle, which changes where a technician can safely place lift arm pads. A standard above ground lift with generic frame-contact arms can put pressure directly under a battery pack if the technician isn’t careful, which is a real safety and warranty concern, not just a theoretical one.

For hybrid and EV service bays, we recommend lifts with adjustable, low-profile arm pads and enough arm reach to get contact points outboard of the battery pack entirely, using factory-specified lift points. We also walk through each platform the shop commonly services — since a Marion EV specialty shop might see everything from hybrid sedans to full EV trucks — and confirm the lift’s arm range covers the shortest and longest wheelbases in that mix. Buying a generic lift because it’s cheaper up front often means buying arm extensions or a second lift within a year once the shop realizes the fitment problem.

Myth: Ceiling Height Only Matters for Full-Rise Lifts

Shop owners often assume ceiling clearance is only a concern for four-post or full-rise scissor lifts, but a two-post above ground lift with an overhead crossbar still needs real headroom, especially once you add a raised vehicle on top of it. We’ve measured Marion bays where the ceiling looked plenty tall until you accounted for HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, and lighting fixtures hanging down into the usable space.

The fix is measuring from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction, not just the ceiling deck, and comparing that against the lift’s maximum rise plus vehicle height for the tallest platform the shop services. For hybrid and EV work specifically, some larger EV trucks and SUVs are taller than their gas counterparts once lifted, which shrinks the safety margin further. Get this measurement before you finalize duct runs or lighting placement, not after.

Myth: Electrical and Air Line Rough-In Can Happen Anytime

Because a two-post above ground lift usually runs on a single-phase or three-phase power drop and needs an air line for the locking mechanism, waiting until after flooring and drywall are finished means expensive retrofit work — saw-cutting finished floors or surface-mounting conduit that should have been buried. We’ve been called in after the fact to help shops route power because the electrical rough-in didn’t account for where the lift’s power unit needed to sit.

The better approach is finalizing the lift model and its exact power requirements before the electrician’s rough-in walk-through, so conduit and outlets land in the right spot in the slab or wall, not wherever’s convenient afterward. This is a small planning step that takes one phone call between the shop owner, the electrician, and us, but it saves real money and time later.

Myth: A Storage or Home-Style Lift Is Fine for Commercial Volume

Some specialty shop owners try to save money by installing a lighter-duty above ground lift meant for occasional home garage use in a commercial bay running daily volume. These lower-duty-cycle lifts aren’t built for the constant up-and-down cycling a busy EV specialty shop puts on equipment, and they wear out arms, cables, and hydraulic components far faster than a commercial-rated unit.

We size lifts based on daily cycle count as much as weight capacity for shops like this. A commercial-duty two-post rated for continuous daily use, even if it costs somewhat more up front, will outlast a residential-grade unit by years in a shop doing multiple vehicles a day. The math almost always favors buying commercial-rated equipment the first time rather than replacing a home-grade lift within a couple of seasons.

Getting Build-Out Sequencing Right From Day One

The real fix for all of these myths is the same: bring in your lift installer before you finalize any other part of the bay build-out, not after.
